Chapter 4

Nissa took the writing and began reciting it. As the words flowed from her lips, she felt their simplicity and purity, different from her style. Yet, she couldn’t resist weaving her touch into it, as a witch and an active member of the convent. As she recited, she felt a sense of deliverance and the lifting of a burden. She went back to the beginning and start anew, determined to infuse her work with the right emotions and feelings. Meanwhile, Hattie, sitting beside her, felt a newfound sense of darkness growing inside her, knowing that revenge for her brother was within her reach.

As a witch, Hattie was bound by the pledge she had taken to show charity to others, to be kind, and to help ease their burdens and misery. She knew that if she went down the path of revenge, the pull it would have on her would be incredible, and it would be hard to come back.

She reflected on the weight of her responsibilities, and the importance of using her powers for good. The pledge was a constant reminder of her duty to help dissolve hopelessness in the world and to never rest until she had done so.

“Hattie,” Nissa said, surprised by the sudden appearance of the purses and makeup. “You didn’t have to do that. But thank you, I appreciate it."

Hattie smiled, her purple hair glinting in the light. “Consider it a gift. You deserve it for all the help you’ve given me.”

Nissa smiled back, grateful for Hattie’s generosity. “Thank you. But honestly, helping you is reward enough for me. I’m happy to do it.”

With a wide smile and big eyes, Hattie replied, “You’re welcome! And don’t worry about owing me anything. You’re always there for me when I need help.” Nissa nodded, adjusting her pink lipstick to prepare for the meeting at the bookstore. “Of course, I’m always happy to help.”

Hattie then mentioned that she would be away in two months to recharge in the ocean. Nissa knew her abilities could start disappearing if she spent too much time on land without recharging in water. “No problem. I hope you have a good time in the ocean. And I do not doubt that you’re on your way to doing some good. Your heart is in the right place, and you’re always willing to help others.”

Nissa planted a gentle kiss on Hattie’s forehead and spoke, “Don’t overthink it, Hattie. You’re doing more good than you’ll ever know. When you help a parent, for instance, you don’t see the domino effect of the goodness you create.”

She was aware of everything that was happening and what was yet to come. Sunday evening was when they had planned to gather and hear the story of what had happened to Hattie’s brother. Nissa grabbed the book that she knew would help her get Trevilto to let his guard down. As darkness fell, Hattie’s tears glistened in the light, creating a sad and beautiful scene reminiscent of a sunrise.

Nissa couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness for Hattie and the pain she was going through. She knew that Hattie’s brother’s disappearance had taken a toll on her, and she wanted to help in any way she could. As they made their way to the meeting, Nissa couldn’t help but think about the pledge that Hattie had taken. She was bound to use her powers for good and to help those in need, but she also knew that revenge was tempting.

As they arrived at the bookstore, Nissa took a deep breath and focused on the task at hand. She knew that getting Trevilto to open up would be challenging, but she was determined to do whatever it took to find out what had happened to Hattie’s brother.

As they entered the bookstore, Nissa could feel the tension in the air. She could sense that Trevilto was nervous and guarded, but she remained calm and composed. She knew that her powers of persuasion would come in handy, and she opened the book, ready to weave her spell.

As she read, Nissa could feel the power of the book flowing through her. She could see Trevilto’s guard low, and she knew she was getting closer to the truth. She continued to read, her voice rising and falling with the rhythm of the words, until finally, Trevilto broke down and told them everything.

Hattie’s eyes widened in shock as she listened to the story. She had suspected foul play, but she never imagined the extent of it. As Trevilto finished his tale, Nissa knew they had to act fast. They couldn’t let this injustice go unpunished, and they had to bring those responsible to justice.
