Chapter 12

The favorable climate brought by these skies was of great importance, and it had a profound influence on the city’s architectural styles. Buildings were designed with daring and unique elements that could only be achieved in the absence of strong winds.

The skyline was dominated by a myriad of distinct skyscrapers that looked stunning when viewed together. Recreation was exceptional in The Patriarch Isles, and it had attracted attention from people all over the world. Many new cultures had left their mark, not only on the city’s cuisine but also on its identity. What was once a city of little diversity had grown into a melting pot of cultures, uniting its 9 million inhabitants.

This multicultural identity had truly left its mark. Hundreds of ethnic restaurants, take-outs, and coffeehouses offered a vast array of culinary choices. For those looking for other forms of entertainment, there were clubs, city exploring, and many other recreational venues to choose from.

They arrived at the castle, and Nissa was awestruck by its beauty. The castle boasted four slender, circular towers that dominated the skyline, all connected by broad, grey stone walls. Elegant windows were generously scattered throughout the walls in what seemed like a haphazard pattern, along with various-sized holes for archers and artillery.

The castle was guarded by a grand gate with heavy metal doors, a regular bridge, and archer holes. It protected the peaceful city within the extinct volcano, and it was the only easy way in. Any attempt to enter from another side would be futile.

Fields of emptiness stretched out beyond the castle, allowing for the spotting of any incoming threats from a great distance. Although the walls were aged, with plants and vines growing in the cracks, this castle had stood the test of time and would continue to do so for ages to come.

Nissa was in awe of the city and the castle, and she understood why it was a popular spot for witches. It seemed to keep trouble at bay. “So, what are we doing here?” Nissa asked. “I need a new wand, one that will enhance my magic,” Hattie replied. They entered the Wand Stop, and Hattie greeted the man at the counter. Hattie began testing wands and examining them like Nissa shops for shoes. After a few tries, she found one she liked.

Nissa listened intently to Hattie’s explanation about the wand. She found it fascinating how the combination of different woods and cores could determine the wand’s abilities and characteristics.

She picked up the wand and felt the smoothness of the Cherry Wood and Elm Wood handle in her hand. It felt like it was meant to be hers. She could almost feel the power pulsating through it.

“I think this is the one,” she said with a smile.

Hattie grinned. “I had a feeling you’d like it. And with that wand in your hand, you’ll be a force to be reckoned with.”

Nissa paid for the wand and they left the shop, excited to try it out.

Nissa’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she spotted a gem shop. “Can we go there?” she asked Hattie eagerly, pointing towards the shop. Hattie chuckled, “Sure, we can go, but only if you promise to make me more jewelry if we find anything good.” Nissa grinned, “Deal!” They made their way to the gem shop, their eyes taking in the colorful displays of precious stones and metals.

As they walked towards the gem shop, Nissa couldn’t help but feel drawn to the sparkling gemstones on display. The shop had an array of gems ranging from the usual rubies and emeralds to rare and exotic ones. Nissa was interested in the pink diamonds.

Hattie watched as Nissa excitedly looked around the shop, examining each gemstone carefully. “If you find anything you like, just let me know,” Hattie said.

As they browsed through the gem shop, Nissa’s eyes were immediately drawn to a large Howlite gemstone with an emerald cut. Despite its rough condition, she could see its potential as a valuable addition to her collection. Howlite gems were highly sought after because of their rarity and defensive properties, which made them perfect for enhancing defensive spells.

Beside the Howlite was a smaller Moldavite gemstone with a marquise cut. Although it was in average condition, Nissa could sense its power. Moldavite gems were also quite rare and had a reputation for containing shady properties, making them ideal for enhancing offensive artifacts.
