Chapter 11

Once they were out of sight, they broke into a run, not stopping until they were safely back at Nissa’s cottage. “That was too close,” Nissa said, taking a deep breath as she leaned against the door. Hattie nodded in agreement, her face pale.

“We need to be more careful,” she said, her voice shaking slightly. “We can’t keep running into dangerous creatures like that.”

Nissa nodded, knowing that Hattie was right. They couldn’t let their guard down, not with the threats they faced. She made a mental note to increase their protection spells and to be even more vigilant in the future.

As they sat in the safety of Nissa’s cottage, Nissa couldn’t help but think about the vampires they had just encountered. She wondered what their true intentions were and why they were traveling so far from their usual territories. The fact that they had identified her as a siren also concerned. She knew that her powers were not something to be taken lightly, and she didn’t want to fall prey to any vampire’s seductive charms.

Hattie, sensing Nissa’s unease, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. “Don’t worry, Nissa. We’ll be okay. We’ve faced worse than a few vampires before.”

Nissa smiled weakly, grateful for Hattie’s words of encouragement. “You’re right, Hattie. We’ve been through a lot together, and we’ll get through this as well.”

The two friends spent the rest of the evening discussing the encounter and planning their next steps. They knew they needed to be more vigilant than ever and to stay on the lookout for any signs of danger.

As the night wore on, Nissa couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the pit of her stomach. She knew they had narrowly avoided a dangerous situation, but she couldn’t help but wonder what else was out there, waiting for them in the darkness.

Nissa was roused from her slumber by the delicious aroma of breakfast and the sound of fresh coffee being brewed. Hattie, always the early riser, had already started the day. As Nissa rubbed the sleep from her eyes, Hattie greeted her with a cheery “Good morning, Nissa.”

Nissa, a lover of both coffee and brandy, was delighted to see the steaming mug of coffee in Hattie’s hand. “Good morning to you too, Hattie. What’s cooking? Salesman, mailman, or my favorite sailor?” she teased.

Hattie’s face registered surprise, then amusement. “Just some toast, eggs, and bacon,” she replied with a grin.

Nissa laughed, her mood brightened by the banter. “I was only joking,” she said with a smile.

Hattie shared her plans with Nissa over breakfast. “I’m considering a trip to The Unicorn’s Horn in The Patriarch Isles.” Nissa was unfamiliar with the location, “Where is that?” she asked. Hattie replied, “It’s a place primarily visited by witches. It’s rare to encounter other species there, but if you’re interested, I can take you along.” Nissa’s eyes lit up, “I would love to go!” Hattie informed her, “It’s in another realm, but don’t worry, you’ll see. Get ready.”

Hattie conjured a spell, and a soothing magenta tide of small waves washed over her, transporting her to a new location. “Welcome to The Patriarch Isles,” Hattie exclaimed, brimming with excitement. “See that castle over there? That’s where we’re headed. That’s The Unicorn’s Horn, the Wand and Magic shop.”

As they strolled towards the castle, Nissa marveled at the surrounding sights. The city of The Patriarch Isles was built around an oasis in the middle of a desert, and it was truly a marvel of modern engineering. Its sleek and sophisticated architecture was complemented by the backdrop of clear blue skies, which helped to shape the city’s design.

The favorable climate brought by these skies was of great importance, and it had a profound influence on the city’s architectural styles. Buildings were designed with daring and unique elements that could only be achieved in the absence of strong winds.

The skyline was dominated by a myriad of distinct skyscrapers that looked stunning when viewed together. Recreation was exceptional in The Patriarch Isles, and it had attracted attention from people all over the world. Many new cultures had left their mark, not only on the city’s cuisine but also on its identity. What was once a city of little diversity had grown into a melting pot of cultures, uniting its 9 million inhabitants.

This multicultural identity had truly left its mark. Hundreds of ethnic restaurants, take-outs, and coffeehouses offered a vast array of culinary choices. For those looking for other forms of entertainment, there were clubs, city exploring, and many other recreational venues to choose from.
