Chapter 1:Drewie

Chapter 1:Drewie

With a fierce flick of the mouse, I watched as my level 65 character was killed by a shiny level 52 player and then trampled upon with arrogance. I was so frustrated that I almost vomited. What a garbage online game! It's only playable if you spend money on it, and players without money are nothing.

My name is Wu Fan, a healthy unmarried male who just graduated from some third-rate university at the age of 23. Currently unemployed, I am looking for a girlfriend...

After finally obtaining my graduation certificate from that damn school, I thought I could find a job and live peacefully for the rest of my life. However, fate had other plans for me as I found myself among the ranks of unemployed college graduates struggling to find satisfying work. Despite sending out countless resumes and attending numerous job fairs, either no one wanted me or they were not good enough for me. Months have passed since graduation but still here I am doing nothing all day long.

Fortunately, before passing away my parents left behind quite an inheritance which allows me to live comfortably in their apartment located in prime real estate in Guangzhou city - around 150 square meters which is too big for one person so I rent half out to cover expenses.

But who am I? Although most of my entrepreneurial passion has been worn down by cruel reality over time; after all these years spent studying hard at university how can someone like me just sit idly waiting to die? So during these past few months while searching for jobs online or visiting talent markets hoping some multinational corporation will take pity on this graduate with his third-rate degree; during leisure time when not playing basketball or surfing the internet watching TV shows - what else can be done except play certain games even worse than those played back in school?

The game "Overlord" that currently occupies most of my free time is one such newly launched game within recent month(s) that caught my attention due to its unique dungeon system. However, I never expected this game which claims to be free and boasts over 50 players online at the same time would turn out to be such a garbage game. After being killed by RB (Real Money Buyers) players for the nth time, I finally realized that without spending money in this game it is impossible to compete with those who do.

Suppressing the urge to kill thousands of these trashy players - isn't that what gaming companies want? Although I don't need their money, I won't fall for their trap either. If they want my money then they can forget about me playing!

Without hesitation, I dragged the game into the recycle bin and clicked "empty". Damn it! Go die!

Fuming with anger, I lit up a cigarette whose crimson tip illuminated my dark room like a beacon. It was already past 9 pm but as an experienced netizen, my eyes wouldn't close until dawn so what else could I do? Boredly lying on my chair staring at all the icons on my computer screen before glancing towards one corner where there was an icon of Diablo II - yes! The iconic symbol of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction which had accompanied me through many years but has been forgotten by me for many more.

My heart was ignited by memories long buried under layers of dust; unable to contain myself any longer, I eagerly opened up the game and entered into its familiar world.

Hold on, it seems that there are still some Diablo cheats and mods available. Remembering my frustration earlier, I suddenly felt the urge to vent out my anger. In my blurred memory, I recalled the existence of mods. Back in the day, I used my own mod to enter hell and repeatedly tortured Baal countless times. The single-player version of Diablo is insane - if you play alone, you must be prepared to be abused in hell mode. Just having a -100 resistance can make you drink endless potions; not to mention those monsters with invincible attributes or crazy attack and defense stats that even top gamers would go crazy over.

I admit that I'm not skilled enough for this game so I've been using mods since nightmare difficulty until reaching the endgame.

Ah yes, mods! As I muttered these words under my breath while searching through piles of discs for that hidden mod buried deep inside one of them whose name has long been forgotten by me now but had no choice but to try each one until finding it.

Finally found it! A familiar yet strange interface popped up before me as fragments from memory guided me into modification mode.

First things first: creating a character. No need to go back into the game when we can create characters within the mod itself and save them in folder "a". Name? Whatever works; names aren't important to me anyway.

Next comes choosing a class which is crucially important because Diablo II offers seven classes: Paladin, Sorceress, Necromancer, Amazonian Warrior (Amazon), Druids (Druid), Assassin (Assassin) and Barbarian (Barbarian). It's been so long since last playing this game so any class will do really; they all interest me equally anyways... Let's just close our eyes and pick randomly... And voila! My character turned out to be a druid!

Now comes the most critical part: equipment modification aka the infamous bug. I randomly dragged out a Space Blade with six sockets and added attributes one by one, even though they were all in English. With my mediocre English skills and past memories, I was able to guess most of them.

Next up is the bug talisman - known as "one-talisman-hand" that has everything: +7 skills, 155% chance of getting magical equipment (level 8%). That's enough for me!

After finishing, I thought about entering the game to take a look. Unfortunately, using a modifier often causes damage to the character and makes it unusable. So I saved the character file and double-clicked to enter Diablo.

Hmm, there it is.

The first character on the list is the one I just created with the modifier. I double-clicked to enter.

Holding my breath, I nervously watched as the loading screen appeared. Success or failure would be determined in this moment. If it failed, then an error message would appear and my character data would be damaged beyond repair.

Uh oh...the loading screen stopped halfway through. My heart sank as it seemed like this attempt had failed too. But that's okay; rebuilding another one wouldn't take much effort.

Suddenly, something changed onscreen and my heart skipped a beat.

But instead of seeing an error message like before, there were only two large buttons displayed against a pitch-black background:

"Y"

"N"

I rubbed my eyes in disbelief - this had never happened before! Why were these two options suddenly appearing? Could it be some kind of virus?

I hesitated for a long time while staring at those two big buttons, unsure if they were part of some malicious program or not...

Finally though, that mysterious "Y" button seemed to possess some strange power over me - almost like magic - so without really thinking things through properly...I clicked "Y".

And then everything went black: my body disappeared from in front of my computer desk...

Meanwhile elsewhere...a huge black vortex swallowed up all consciousness until finally succumbing completely.
