Chapter 59: Life Outside of Combat

Chapter 59: Life Outside of Combat

Rune pointed at the guard who shot him, telling him that his paycheck had decreased by 5%, which was still a lot of money. His monthly salary was 2 gold or 200 silver. That salary now became 190 silver coins.

Rune was completely taken by surprise for he thought that no one from the school, at least not in their right mind, would shoot him. He was mistaken due to the guard being startled while having his index finger on the trigger.

He would have to have someone train them to be more careful when using weapons. If he didn’t, then he would end up in a situation where a guard accidentally killed someone.

The two guards standing on the ground looked up at the on who shot Rune. They only felt a little amount of pity because it clearly was his fault for shooting.

The gate was made of metal bars with a mesh in between them. They could open inwards with the motors used to turn them with a press of a button. The actual metal was silver and had an electric current moving through it that was not powerful enough to kill, but could still paralyze someone for up to several hours, depending on body size.

The walls were made out of some sort of stone that was layered on top of each other and fused together with mortar, made of cement, sand, and water. It was about three stories high and quite thick, about 12 feet.

The walls were actually not placed directly around the school since they wanted more space for development. It now covered a much larger area and, even though it only took several days of hard labor, it became something like an impenetrable fortress.

What had happened was that they used mages to move the blocks and used workers to spread the mortar. Then they had some people smooth out both sides of the wall to make it unclimbable. Those who had done any of those three jobs were now taking a two day break and were given coupons for some restaurants that had already opened up.

Only one cafe, two restaurants, and a general store opened up for business, but there were already three apartments ready and all were filled up.

Ulf, the main architect behind the production, was taking a break in a cafe at the moment and, since it was about midday, Jared and Kelly were eating at a restaurant.

Taking a look at the surroundings, roads, buildings, and walls, Rune praised everyone for doing this inside his head. At the moment, he had to show the two newbies and the goddess around.

Rouna had already taken off to go to the nurse’s office to see if Elisa was alright.

She flapped her wings and lifted herself upwards, into the air. Then she flew right over the gates only to find that an invisible force stopped her.

“Gah!”

One of the guards on the wall, the one who hadn’t shot Rune and wasn’t crying because he was scared he would lose more than just 5% of his pay, looked up at Rouna and spoke.

“Um, Miss Rouna? There is a new barrier that was installed as soon as the wall finished. You have to come through this gate. You can only enter through the gate if you do not have an “ID”, but anyone can exit anywhere, for convenience.”

“I see…”

She muttered as she stepped back onto solid ground. She walked up to and through the gates that were now opening up.

Rune turned to look at the guards.

“An ID? When did this happen?”

“About two days ago. It was when Miss Kelly told us that she was implementing a new system.”

The guard’s ears quivered in fear at the moment Rune spoke to him. He stopped shaking when he realised that he hadn’t done anything wrong.

“Do I have one?”

Rune called upwards for he hadn’t known about the barrier or the IDs.

“Yes. I was told to tell you that you should go ask your wife or one of your maids. They should know where it is.”

“Thanks.”

And so, with Lilac, Mir, and Bel following close behind him, he stepped through the gates that crackled with electricity.

“So this is the area that I reside over. Soon enough, it will become a full city. So far, there is a school and some places over there.”

He pointed through through the gate and the three looked at where he was pointing. There were workers building and mages lifting.

“And this is a school!!”

He spread his arms open wide to say that the multiple large buildings connected by several bridges. There were many windows just lined up against the wall and teens were going in and out of the building.

“Anyway, follow me.”

He started to walk towards his mansion that was still in the school perimeter. He was starting to think that he should either move his home or turn it into a dorm and construct a new home.

Walking through the front door, Rune could see Hela lounging on the couch in the living room. The succubus was snoozing with her left arm dragging on the floor. A little drool was dribbling from the corner of her mouth.

“This way.”

Rune saw this and started to revise his path to avoid the masochist. He was not going to be happy if he had to deal with being shot as well as being nagged by someone to hit them.

The four of them managed to not rouse her while moving around and they headed for the break room. There was a room, similar to the one Mir and Bel used for a while, that the maids could rest in. The room itself was much larger than the one Mir and Bel were used to and the furniture in there was incredibly comfortable.

Rune turned the knob and opened the door without a sound. He peeked in to find the head butler sipping tea and looking at a small card that seemed to be, at least to Rune, what may have been an ID.

“Excuse me, but do you happen to know where the head maid is?”

“Mrrf!!?”

The head butler, startled at the sound of his master’s voice, jumped and spat out his tea simultaneously. He looked up and started to speak after using a handkerchief to wipe his face.

“The head maid should be cleaning the Miss’s study at the moment.”

“Thanks.”

He spoke as he slowly closed the door. The head butler sighed and went back to looking over his card.

“Onward!”

He started to walk as a figure of darkness appeared from the wall. He, feeling no remorse or regret and without a hint of hesitation, palm striked the person.

“Blegh!!”

Blood flew from the grin as the masochist was sent flying down the hall.

He turned back to the rest of the group with eyes that said that he wanted to leave.

“Let’s get out of here.”

----------------------------------------

Sophia was standing next to the door watching the head maid quickly clean around her precious materials. She was not too tired, but definitely had not been sleeping well enough.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

There were dark bags under her eyes and her constant yawning showed that her body wanted to sleep. Leaning against the wall, she yawned once more before the door opened up and appeared-

“Rune!!”

She lunged at him, rubbing her face in his chest. It had become a common occurrence to her to hug Rune whenever he came back from a trip.

She suddenly froze as she noticed that there were three women behind him who were each more curvy than she.

“Who are they?”

She asked in a cold voice, wondering if he was starting a harem that he said he wouldn’t do. She felt inferior to the others due to the… lack of assets, but Rune had no feelings of love for the three of them.

“Lilac, the goddess, Mir, the Vampire maid, and Bel, the Minotaur maid. I hired to two maids to defend this place. As for the goddess… well, we plan to create a place for her to live. Why? Did you think I was cheating on you? I did say I wouldn’t have a harem.”

Still glaring daggers at the maids, she stopped being cold to the goddess because she didn’t want to get on her bad side. Even if she knew that she was a minor goddess, minor goddesses still had the power to utterly destroy someone’s way of life.

Rune turned to the two maids.

“This is my wife, Sophia. This is one of the people you will protect in this mansion. The rest are all the maids and butlers as well as my daughter, Roxana.”

The Minotaur Girl made a noise to say that she understood and the Vampire bowed deeply for she wanted to get on her good side to get more money.

“And this is the head maid. Head maid, you will be teaching these two what it means to be a maid. I hope you train them well. Now then, Sophia and I are off.”

----------------------------------------

Rouna took to the skies. She had learned that, from the guard who stood outside the nurse’s office, Elisa had went back to the palace. She wanted to see her and do some other things on top of that.

While in the nurse’s office, she could see Riika.

“I heard that my leg will take a while to heal, even with the help of Healing magic. The good news is that it doesn’t hurt anymore.”

Rouna smiled a genuine smile when she saw that Riika was getting better. She was able to hobble and move about on crutches, but she was told by Kelly to stay there for a few more days.

“That sounds amazing!! Actually, I have something I have been meaning to ask.”

“Hmm?”

“Where do I get my ID? Also, what else is new?”

“Well, I have heard Kelly talk about a lot of different things, but she seems to be focused on creating something called a “printer”. I have no idea what for though. There was also talk about a “tee vee” coming out soon and some new phones.

As for the ID, you can ask her about it. She should be in one of the cafes or restaurants now.”

“I see. Well, I’ll talk to her when I get back.”

“Oh, are you going to visit Elisa? Tell her I said hi.”

“I will.”

And so Rouna walked at a fast pace to exit the school. Once she was standing on the stone pathway, she extended her wings and flew.

It only took a couple minutes to fly from ALF to the capital, but she did encounter some wyverns along the way. Using her Poison magics, she easily killed them and they tumbled towards the ground.

Once she reached the capital, the palace wasn’t hard to miss at all. In fact, it stood well over ten stories tall with four towers and walls that were taller than those around the Academy of Learning and Fighting.

She scanned the area and found Elisa sitting on a chair that was pulled up to a table with three legs. She sat alone, looking at the garden and sipping her tea.

Slowly descending behind her, Rouna was going to scare her.

“Rawr!!!”

Instead of just a simple sound, she made a sound like a guttural roar. It wasn’t too loud, but it was loud enough to sound like a yell in her ears.

“Wah!!”

She turned around, teacup laying on the table with its contents pouring out. She instinctively reached for her sword only to remember that it was in her room, along with her armor.

Relaxing as soon as she realized that it was Rouna, she sighed and turned in her chair.

“Hello. How are you? That cold I got wasn’t too bad. It was just a simple fever.”

“So, you’re alright enough to go out?”

Elisa looked down at her casual gown. It was a pale pink color with some sort of intertwining design at the bottom and around her sleeves.

“Let me change first.”

----------------------------------------

“...And let me tell you, having those missiles explode and the roof break was not a very fun time. I just can’t believe that the pocket dimension would break. I guess it was too stressed. So now, I think that we should have a set time for people to be in there and the ratio of time from inside to outside should be one day to one hour. One hour spent outside is one day spent inside, or 1:24.

It will hinder our schedule, but I think that this should be enough for us to get the ovens completed by thursday.”

Rune sat across from Kelly as he looked between her and his ID. He had also received a phone that was now in his pocket. The only problem was that it was only useful for about a mile around the school. Outside of that, the technology couldn’t send frequencies.

Sophia was reading one of the books that Rune had gotten from Lilac who was talking to Ulf about the place that she wanted. Of course, that place would take a while and it would have to start after the foundation of the city was laid.

The book Sophia was reading was a tale about a legendary hero who believed in Norse mythology. He had come from Earth where, between the worlds, he met Odin while he was hanging himself with a spear in his stomach. Odin gave him enough knowledge to survive in the wildlands of Arborea, before cities and empires were founded.

Sophia was also reading the book because she had no idea what Kelly, Jared, and Rune were talking about. She understood that an “oven” was something to cook food and that a “fridge” was a place to store food, but other than that, she had no idea what they were speaking about.

What had happened was that Kelly and Jared had decided to build some more levels, but it ended in disaster when the pocket dimension collapsed due to the sheer size of the room and the roof burst. The room was a couple stories high and they managed to turn it into something like an observatory.

Luckily, the lab was behind the mansion and was somewhat separated from the main branch. Of course, not only did the roof become wood dust, but some of the explosives that were not strapped down rolled about and made several large holes in the ground. The material that the walls and floor were made out of helped to contain it, but not by much.

“I think I will also go there for a bit. I want to work on a new weapon. I killed an Irregular Dragon and I obtained some new material.”

“Mmm. Yeah, I got some tools that can appraise some items. You can use them if you want.”

Kelly put a forkful of cake in her mouth and proceeded to eat it. Jared was just eating a crispy pastry that was rectangular with jam filling.

A girl in a maid costume came over with a circular tray and some cold tea with honey. She placed down the tea and walk away after bowing.

“That’d be great. Where are they?”

“The fifth floor.”

“There’s at least five floors?”

“A total of seven.”

Jared spoke like he was quite proud of the room, now a building, that he and Kelly had constructed with the help of others.

“That’s why it's so tall.”

“Indeed.”

Rune paused and turned to Sophia. The other two started to eat their food once more and Sophia looked up at Rune.

“How is Roxana?”

“She’s doing well. She always seems to be eager to learn and catches on how to use Fire magic quickly. Lisbeth teaches her class quite well and she was finally able to learn B rank magic.”

“That’s amazing! That is amazing, right? I’m assuming, since the ranks of magic go from F to SSS.”

She sighed and smiled lightly.

“Yes, it is good. I guess you don’t have a good idea of what the average is for regular people.”

He chuckled when he realized that he had only been comparing himself with powerful beings for the past month or so and hadn’t even thought of what he was compared to the average folk.

----------------------------------------

Rena stuffed her face with the noodles from her bowl. The broth inside was warm and rich and the meat inside was delicious. The cafeteria chefs had been getting some recipes from both the capital and the Beast Folk. They had gotten word that there was a small kingdom somewhere on the continent and they had sent some merchants there to trade.

That kingdom was a small one that was steadily growing. The ruler of that land was a Fallen Angel, Stacy, where she worshipped farming and agriculture gods the most and took in outcasts. It wasn’t just a regular kingdom either, it had some floating islands around its main town.

In that kingdom, there were rumors that they had wonderful food and amazing culture, but was quite far away from the capital and all the major cities in the Human continent. Even though it was so distant from the other places, Stacy had no qualms trading with merchants.

Actually, being a person from another world, she had allowed several others from her class to live in her city. Those living there were Ari, the Roc, Brian, the Demonic Bear, Brittany, the Dryad, Rick, the Pit Fiend, and Tio, the Gorgon.

Rena sat with Erin, Hika, and Jayn, a Dragonborn from their class who was friends with Erin.

Hika had ordered the beef and noodle stew, just like Rena had, and already finished her bowl.

“So what do you want to do now? I heard a rumor that Rune is back.”

Hika put both her elbows on the wooden table and pointed her fork lazily towards her. Rena looked up, noodles still in mouth.

“Mrrfff. Ahem. Well, if he is here, then we’d better check where he might be.”

“Agreed.”

Erin pounded the table as he spoke. Some of the sauce that was on his plate splattered onto the table’s top.

“Hmm?”

Jayn looked up from from her food and looked at the others. She didn’t know Rune as well as the rest did and only knew him as the eccentric, but fearsome weapons teacher.

But, since she had nothing else to do, she simply shrugged and quickly finished the rest of her food and followed the group as they left through the double doors of the cafeteria.

Some of the maids that Rune dispatched were working to clean up the school and some had to clean up after the teens who were quite messy with their food. It was like someone decided to dump their food and smear it all over the ground which was not a very nice sight.
