Chapter 24: Sphinxes?

Chapter 24: Sphinxes?

Rune got up from the floor of the ship and wiped away the blood and guts from his shoulders. He turned to look ahead of them and he thought that he could see a silhouette through the fog. It looked like there were multiple buildings in the distance.

He started to talk to Rouna.

“We haven’t encountered Aboleths yet, right?”

“No, we have, but I think that you killed them.”

“What did they look like again?”

“Strange tentacle beasts with a huge maw and no eyes. They have large gills next to their mouths and their color is a murky white.”

Rune nodded as he heard this and started to focus on what was at hand. Mainly the fact that there was a port in front of them.

As they neared, he could see that there was a huge dock in front of hundreds of buildings where it looked like people were gathering. Rouna, Sophia, Rena and the rest of the Honor’s class, and Elisa were looking upon the people in front of them.

The ship set down both anchors in front of the docks, but wasn’t connected to it. Rune signalled for everyone else to stay onboard and he hopped down. People started to crowd him and ask him questions.

“Who are you?”

“Are you here to help?”

“Buzz off! I want to ask a question!”

“Why won’t you answer us?”

“Do you speak a different language?”

“Um, no. I don’t…”

“He talked! It is a he, right?”

“Obviously.”

The people were bombarding him with questions as he moved along the docks. The people around him were unusual as they had animal ears like a lion sprouting from their heads, but they also had wings of the same color.

There seemed to be two different types of people as one had sandy colored wings and ears and another had pure white wings and ears. They seemed to be against each other as none of the people with the same colored ears pushed each other, but they most certainly pushed the other people with the other colored ears.

He wanted no part in this separation though. He just wanted to go kill things.

The entirety of the docks were filled to the brim with people as they tried to interact with Rune. Suddenly, a path opened up and two people moved along it.

One had pure blue eyes and the other had pure white eyes, but both had no pupils. The one with blue eyes had sandy colored hair, wings, ears, and a tail. The other with white eyes had pale white hair, wings, ears, and a tail.

They were both females and were walking side by side. Each of them put on fake smiles that were quite obvious and they occasionally judged each other with their elbows.

The two of them stopped in front of Rune and started to speak. He noticed that they wore tiaras that were the same color as their hair and three different colored necklaces around their necks.

Their clothes were both different in style and what material they used. The white haired one was wearing a cape that used white fur around the collar and the rest seemed to be made of a cloth material. She had a revealing shirt that was much like a crop top. Her pants covered all of her legs and was tight on the skin.

The girl with sand colored hair was wearing a long scarf that seemed to flow around her. It’s color was like the sand. She wore a long sleeve shirt with a detached collar that seemed to just be made of cloth and a string that tied it together. She wore a skirt that was way too short and covered only about half of her thighs.

The two of them looked up at Rune in almost perfect harmony and asked him the same question before starting to push each other.

“Want to come with me?”

“Are you two the leaders?”

“Yes, I am the leader of the Weiss.”

“Yes, I am the leader of the Dunes.”

The Weiss were the white haired group while the Dunes were the sand colored hair group.

“Where shall we meet?”

Both replied in synchronized harmony again after they thought for a moment and answered.

“Let’s meet at my house. Just the two of us.”

Then they flared at each other and started to argue about whose house they should go to. Rune felt as if he was ignored when the two argued because he was.

“Why don’t we meet at a cafe or something. The four of us.”

“Four?”

Rune used telepathy and called to Sophia. She understood what he said and quickly climbed down the ship and jumped into Rune’s open arms.

“As you can see, I am already taken. So, now let’s go.”

----------------------------------------

The two of the grumbled as Sophia cling to his arm and gave the two of them a grin that said that Rune was only her’s. The two leaders started to sulk as they walked.

Rune could only chuckle a small bit when he saw this as he didn’t want to offend anyone. People stopped to stare at the group of four as they passed by the houses and, some, even stopped fighting for a moment.

The two leaders led them to a restaurant as they didn’t know the meaning of “cafe” and they wouldn’t have any if they didn’t know what it meant.

The restaurant was huge with several tens of tables with two to eight chairs around each. There was a cashier at the entrance who took the group to a table and sat them down. This town seemed more sophisticated than several of the places that Rune had heard about.

There were two menus at the table and the waiter poured them some tea. The two leaders both shared one menu while Rune and Sophia took another.

Rune was wearing the clothes that Sophia had made for him, his black and grey outfit. Sophia was wearing her usual style of clothes. It was like a white jacket with small iron pauldrons and the sleeves grew wider the farther it went down. Her jacket was open, revealing a white t-shirt. She wore pants similar to jeans, but they were more flexible and not made of cotton.

Her hair was let down currently, but it didn’t touch the floor as it only went down slightly below her shoulders. The front of her hair was cut shorter than that so that it wouldn’t reach her shoulders. Her Anubis ears were standing tall as she smiled at Rune.

There was food that Sophia had never seen before, but Rune recognizes some of it. There was poutine, fish and chips, where the chips were french fries, and even burgers. They ordered food and Rune started to ask them questions.

“Excuse me for asking, but how was this town created?”

Both of them set down their tea cups and started to talk at the same time. Now that Rune realized it, they had very similar voices that one could barely distinguish from the other.

“It all started a long time ago when a lone adventurer with his imp on one shoulder encountered a den of monsters. To be exact, they were Sphinxes. Each one was the color of the night and they had beautiful, jet black wings on their back. There was no difference between them except the markings on their faces.

The adventurer started to talk with them through telepathy and they were amazed by this. They took a liking to him and allowed him to live near them. He provided them with food, water, and even helped defend them when they needed it. He was their savior.

However, they still felt a distance from him as they had the body of lions and he was a human. One day, a girl decided to turn herself into a human and she experimented night and day to to do.

After months of devotion, the girl was able to produce a potion that allowed her to become a human. She drank it and her body was engulfed in light. Then the light split into two and out came a white child and a sand colored child.

They were both identical in all ways except hair color. Her age was slightly less than the adventurer’s but she was still young. She set out to look for him and found him sleeping underneath a tree. The two of them shook him awake and he helped in surprise.

Then he accepted their story and their love and he married both of them. The other sphinxes decided to drink the potion, but each turned into either white haired or sand colored hair humanoids.

The adventurer told them how to live outside of the cave and they started to move towards the coast. They built a town and the next generation decided to increase more. The adventurer showed them recipes from his world and how to do certain things. He was a genius and the people praised him.

But he decided to go into the Hall and blocked himself from the world when the two lives of his life died in a monster attack. Stricken with grief, he boarded up the room and no one has been able to set foot In it ever since.”

The two of them started to cry as they told it and ended up hugging each other before shoving each other. Sophia was wiping the tears from her face and Rune was stroking his non existent beard.

“Where is this “Hall”?”

“It is in the Advent Fort. Currently, it is underground after a Wyrm attack. It has been down there since the adventurer created it several hundred thousand years ago. But we only live to be up to three hundred years.”

“So are you two twins or something?”

“You realized! People from the outside are so smart!”

“N-no. It’s pretty obvious.”

“My name is Lacht and my sand hair sis is Nacht. We are descended from the adventurer.”

The waiter brought them the food that they ordered and they ate in a silence that was soon broken by the twins. Sophia was happily munching on the fries from her fish and chips.

“So who are you?”

Rune told them he general gist of what he was doing in the continent and explained that he and his crew mates had come in the cruiser because it was much too dangerous to come in a smaller ship.

They soon finished eating and Rune asked to go to the Advent Fort. They agreed to go as his tour guide.

“Is it ok if I go inside the Hall?”

“If you can, then yes. But no one has done it yet.”

They moved from the restaurant into a small hut made of sandstone and there was a door leading into the ground. They opened it and moved down.

What Rune and Sophia found was that there was a huge cavern of stone and a building inside of it. The twins opened up the double doors and led them inside.

They soon found themselves at a doorway that was blocked off by metal.

“This is the Hall. They say his corpse is in here. Can you break it?”

Rune punched it and the metal crumpled under his fist. Then it started to freeze and he punched it once more. Frozen chunks of metal flew around them as the four stared in amazement in the room.

They could see a sofa, a rug, three doors, and a coffee table. Sitting on the sofa was a man with black hair and brown eyes. Around him were two extremely cute girls that were identical. The three on the sofa stared at the four in the doorway as both side gaped at each other.

The man with black hair opened his mouth and waved.

“Uh, what’s up?”

----------------------------------------

“Oh, so that’s how you were able to break through! I thought I reinforced it so that I could keep my piece and quiet with Nya and Mya! This is quite a find! And another World Traveler! How long has it been since I came down here?! Four hundred thousand years?!

Well, I do have the [Infinite Regeneration] cheat! I could easily have resurrected them on the spot, but we wanted some time to ourselves! It’s a great thing to basically have immortality to live with a lover forever!”

The adventurer, Henry, was transmigrated from Europe during the early 1900s and he was fascinated by how far the world had come. He was also extremely scared of the two World Wars that occurred.

He said that he was one of two transmigrated people who both came to the unknown continent. They didn’t have anything to do after they killed the Demon King and so they went their separate ways.

Apparently, Nya and Mya were the first ones to transform and the rest were descended from them. Lacht and Nacht were surprised when they were hugged by their great times about 1,350 generations grandparents.

Henry patted the twins’ heads as soon as he found d out and he was overcome with joy as he found out that they “inherited the cute genes” from Nya and Mya. They were actually Nya’s, the white haired Sphinx, relative directly and Mya’s nieces.

It turned out that Mya’s child had decided to go on an adventure. He had come back with information and had a child with a cute Sphinx girl. Her relatives were now managers of restaurants, the bank, and other things.

“What did you do for fun when you were in here?”

He chuckled while looking at Nya and Mya who were licking their lips. He turned back to Rune.

“A lot of things. I also wrote a journal of how events happened. I can’t be bothered to remember everything from several hundred years ago.”

He gestured to Rune the large pile of paper on the table that was sorted into five groups. According to him, four of them were to recount their life above ground and he last one, which was the largest, was the list of the things the three of them did over the past several hundred thousand years.

They had made clothes, food, as they had a fabricator in a back room, and other things. They also did a lot of other things, but Rune decided to not read about it.

“I have, like, five copies of the events. Take them and share them. I guess it’s time to go up as well. I want to see how much the town has changed. Ohh!!! Has It become a country yet?!”

“No.”

The two twins answered in synchronization again and Henry smiled at how cute they were. Rune wanted to ask him a question.

“Do you know anything about Tiamat’s Heads?”

“Yep. Evil bunch really, but they are fine if you leave them alone. They only seek power to let out Tiamat. As long as you aren’t a king or queen and aren’t the Demon King, you should be fine. They only want the Demon king’s gems and to get the Legendary Weapons. Especially Gungnir and Excalibur. I think they already have Gram and Zeus’s Lightning Bolt.

As long as you don’t have any of those or aren’t any of those, you should be fine.”

“Um, then I think I’m in trouble.”

“Don’t tell me, you have a legendary weapon.”

“Uh, I don’t?”

“Don’t lie.”

“I have Gungnir, another person on the ship has Excalibur, and I am also the Demon King.”

Henry swore. He sighed a deep breath and started to talk just after face palming.

“Just… protect the village if dragons come.”

“Hmm? Yeah, sure. I’ll kill a dragon.”

Henry, Nya, and Mya followed the four of them as they made their way up the ladder and exited the hut. People started to stare at the three people and crowded them.

They asked many questions about who they were and, soon enough, people knew who they were and were regarded as legends to be worshipped. Henry was perfectly content without being worshipped and was trying to get Nya or Mya to help him out to no avail.
