[Light-blue] Crystals: 183

"We'll need to keep gathering crystals, but at a faster rate if we want to maintain this upkeep," KiAera muttered. "This is what happens when we have such numbers…"

"Osseod, hunger." Pi Osseod chided her.

"You've been eating way more than everyone else. Stop being so greedy," she scolded the small creature.

Pi Osseod rubbed its head apologetically. "Sorry, Merecritt KiAera."

KiAera sighed and shook her head. She returned to accounting their resources, double-checking the numbers to ensure nothing was overlooked.

"I should really start keeping a journal for all of this," she mumbled.

⎾'Might I suggest creating a record, Miss KiAera? It would help you stay organized and track your progress. I believe it would be beneficial to you—'⏌

"Thanks, GamaGen, for volunteering to keep a record," KiAera chirped.

The book stared at her owlishly.

⎾'—I didn't volunteer—'⏌

"Oh, right, right." KiAera chuckled. "My bad! It just seems like a good idea to have a book keep track of these things..."

⎾'...I suppose the GamaGen could indeed be of use.'⏌

KiAera nodded, pleased with the outcome. "To be honest, GamaGen, I'm not sure where I'd be without you. You've helped me so much already, and I haven't even known you for a full week," she gave the book a cheeky smile.

⎾'It's an honor to assist, Miss KiAera. You are a kind and worthy soul,'⏌ GamaGen responded, though its tone softer than usual. She could've sworn the raven symbol on its cover had a pinkish tint to it.

KiAera felt her heart swell with affection. She patted GamaGen's cover. "The honor's mine, GamaGen."

"We all lucky! Osseods like KiAera!" Big Osseod piped up. KiAera fell over as it scurried towards her and nudged its head against her fur.

"Agreed," Amber chirped, joining in on the cuddle session.

KiAera felt warmth blooming in her chest. She was surrounded by so much love and support; it was overwhelming. She let out a contented sigh and leaned against the two Zeozon monsters.

"I'm so lucky to have you guys by my side. You've all been so kind and helpful to me." She noted her voice wavered slightly. They got her all gooey and gushy inside.

Then she had an internal meltdown of goodness as the other Osseods nuzzled against her, their gentle touches pushing her toward the brink of nirvana!

More Osseods joined in, nudging and cuddling into her fur until it got to be a bit overwhelming. KiAera squirmed out of the furry heap, laughing. "Alright, alright, space, guys! We'll miss dinner if you don't give me some space!"

That got their attention. The group scattered quickly, all eyes on the pile of light-blue crystals she’d been counting. KiAera checked the stash one last time, satisfied they had enough. "Okay, it's dinner time! Let's eat!"

Big Osseod, Amber, and the rest of the Osseods eyes brightened as KiAera prepared dinner. The Kobolbos and the Skyrawltal yowled.

She opened a pouch brimming with crystals and begun distributing them equally among the group, ensuring everyone received their fair share. Once that was done, she sat down and began to eat. So sweet! She crunched and munched her crystals, swaying to their exquisite taste.

KiAera had never felt more satisfied after eating a meal in Zeldritzon. The light-blue crystal had been incredibly refreshing and satisfying, like a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer day. She let out a contented sigh, feeling full and happy. She also felt so much stronger!

"That was delicious. Thank you for bringing back so many crystals, everyone," she said, smiling at the Osseods. "I'm so proud of you guys."

The Osseods preened under her praise.

"Osseod bring crystal! Osseod good!" the little Osseods chirped.

KiAera nodded. "You guys sure are."

She turned to Amber. "How are you feeling, Amber? You settling in okay?"

"LeeLee feel good! LeeLee like forest!" Amber chirped.

KiAera chuckled. "I'm glad to hear that, Amber. I hope you'll continue to enjoy your stay here."

Amber let out a happy chirp and nodded. She pivoted and pecked at her food.

KiAera sat back, legs crossed, watching her bizarre little crew as they dug into their crystal dinner. She had to admit, seeing monsters munch on glowing rocks like they were the best thing ever was still something she couldn't quite get used to. She chuckled, resting her chin in her hand.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.

"Alright, who's getting the first bite?" she murmured to herself.

The Osseods were at it already, small paws gripping their shiny blue prizes, nibbling away like mice with a fresh block of cheese. Their crystal-like bodies sparkled in the light of the shelter as they ate. It was kind of adorable. Well, except for Pi Osseod. That little guy always seemed like he was on the verge of a food coma.

"You're gonna pop if you keep that up," KiAera muttered, shaking her head as Pi continued to eat with a single-minded determination. It reminded her of squirrels back on Earth stuffing their faces as if winter was always just around the corner.

Big Osseod, on the other hand, was more composed, standing guard like an oversized, puppy sentinel while the others chowed down. KiAera could almost imagine it thinking, "Someone's gotta keep an eye out, these rascals don't know when to quit." It was weird how these creatures had their quirks, almost like little personalities beneath their shiny exteriors.

Amber was next in line, scarfing down her crystals. The way Amber's thick legs stomped the ground with each bite made KiAera smile. She imagined Amber as some overgrown dino-bird, tearing into her food like a raptor—except with way more feathers and a lot less menace.

"Slow down, Amber. There's plenty to go around," KiAera called out, though she knew Amber wouldn't really listen. She was too caught up in the feast, her long neck bobbing up and down, kicking up bits of moss as she crunched through another crystal.

The Kobolbos were more civilized about it, if you could call anything involving sharp claws and glowing rocks 'civilized.' They ate in small groups, huddled together like a pack, sharing their stash in this weirdly respectful way. It reminded KiAera of those old documentaries she used to watch about wolves, all hierarchy and teamwork. Of course, instead of tearing into a carcass, they were crunching down on sparkly blue snacks.

And then there was the Skyrawltal, the feathered wyvern, with wings that crawled along the ground rather than fly.

KiAera found the creature fascinating. It perched off to the side, eyeing the others with a quiet intensity. The Skyrawltal's sharp beak tore into a crystal as if sizing it up.

There was something about the Skyrawltal that always struck her as a bit regal. Maybe it was the feathers, or maybe it was just the way the beast held itself, as if it didn't need to hurry, because it knew it could take whatever it wanted, whenever it wanted…

Her thoughts wandered as she watched them all, taking in the weird, surreal scene of monsters munching on crystals. It was strange how normal this was starting to feel. A few days ago, she was just some apocalypse survivor scrounging for canned food, now she was in charge of feeding a motley crew of crystal-eating creatures. And somehow, that didn't feel too weird anymore. The apocalypse did weird things to your brain, she guessed.

But what really got her was the way they all fit together, despite being so different. The Osseods, Amber, the Kobolbos, the Skyrawltal… they weren't just creatures, they were her companions. And she was starting to feel like she belonged here with them. It was almost comforting; in a way she hadn't expected. Watching them feast, she felt a strange warmth in her chest.

"Now then, I think it's time for us to get some rest," she said. "It's been a long day, and we all need to be well-rested for tomorrow."

Amber plopped down, feathers fluffing out like she was proud of herself for finishing the last bite. Skyrawltal gave one last crunch before settling into its usual quiet observation.

The little Osseods didn't need to be told twice. They were already circling around, searching for a cozy spot to crash within the Crystal Shelter. KiAera watched them with a soft smile before turning to GamaGen.

"What about you? You ready to sleep?" she asked, half-joking.

⎾'Sleep...'⏌ GamaGen appeared to ponder, ⎾'is not something I need to do.'⏌

KiAera raised an eyebrow. "Huh, I guess that makes sense. You're not exactly alive in the usual sense, are you?"

⎾'Correct.'⏌

KiAera patted the book's cover gently. "Well, regardless, I hope you'll get some rest, GamaGen. You've been working hard lately, and you deserve to take a break."

GamaGen nodded and let out a low hum.

⎾'Thank you, Miss KiAera.'⏌

KiAera smiled and turned her attention to the Osseods.

She felt a pang of homesickness. Watching the Osseods cuddle reminded her of her cat back on Earth. Cat? She missed those simple comforts, curling up on cold winter nights with her little ball of fluff. Pushing the thought aside, she slipped away from the group.

KiAera stretched, feeling the ache in her limbs from the day's work. "I guess it's time to hit the hay. Tomorrow's gonna be another busy day."

She padded over to the edge of the shelter and curled up to sleep. That was a no go.

Still restless, she grabbed some of the fibers she collected earlier and crafted a simple nightgown and a bonnet,. She scrutinized them, feeling their silken texture. Good enough Sighing in contentment, she slipped them on. And with the leftover material, she continued busying herself by crafting a pillow. She felt much better once she had something cozy to sleep on, especially in this chilly shelter.

KiAera turned her attention to the spear she had made earlier. She looked it over and inspected it carefully. It was a simple design, but it would work well enough for now. She planned to upgrade it later on.

Satisfied, she made her way over to the Liorex egg—only to stop dead in her tracks. Amber was already there, standing guard.

"Amber? What are you doing there?"

"LeeLee protect egg!"

KiAera blinked and stared at the LeapLeap. "Oh," she said softly. "Thank you, Amber. That's very kind of you."

Amber chirped in delight and rubbed her head against KiAera's face. "LeeLee protect KiAera too!"

KiAera smiled and gently stroked the LeapLeap's head. "Thank you, Amber," she said softly.

Amber let out a happy trill and settled down, curling up next to the Liorex egg. KiAera laid next to them, using her makeshift pillow and nightgown to keep herself comfortable.

The rest of the night was uneventful, and KiAera finally fell asleep, dreaming of home. Her mind filled with thoughts of home, her family, her friends, her old life on Earth.
