Book 4: Chapter 2

The gleaming skyscrapers of Moreau City pierced the night sky like gigantic monoliths, their mirrored surfaces reflecting the dazzling neon lights that wrapped around them. Down below, sleek air cars zipped through the elevated sky lanes while ancient ground cars inched along the crowded streets, their chrome bodies shining under the kaleidoscope of billboards and holograms. This cyberpunk utopia, where genetic engineering flourished alongside the latest technological marvels, had always been a beacon of progress and innovation.

But tonight, that beacon flickered and dimmed.

Rei's heart pounded in her chest as she raced through the chaos-filled streets, her pink hair whipping behind her. Luna sprinted at her side, the twins' enhanced reflexes allowing them to weave through the panicked crowds with fluid grace. The city-wide alert still blared from every holoscreen and comm device, its urgent message etched into Rei's mind:

"Attention citizens of Moreau City. A massive explosion has occurred in the downtown district. All residents are advised to evacuate immediately. This is not a drill. Repeat: This is not a drill."

The acrid stench of smoke and fear permeated the air, mingling with the familiar scents of the city – ozone, synthetic fabrics, and the lingering sweetness of gene-spliced flora. Rei's enhanced feline senses picked up every nuance, threatening to overwhelm her as they pushed deeper into the heart of the disaster.

"We need to get closer to ground zero," Luna shouted over the cacophony of screams and sirens. Her blue hair, a stark contrast to Rei's pink locks, streamed behind her like an electric current. "If we can figure out what caused the explosion, maybe we can–"

Luna's words cut off as a ground car came hurtling through the air, missing them by mere inches. It crashed into a nearby storefront, showering the street with shards of neo-glass and twisted metal. Rei yanked her sister behind a fallen holo-billboard, their hearts racing in unison.

"What the hell was that?" Rei hissed, her cat ears twitching as she scanned for threats.

They didn't have to wait long for an answer. A bone-chilling roar echoed through the streets, followed by the sound of tearing metal and shattering glass. Rei peered around the edge of their makeshift shelter, her enhanced vision cutting through the haze of smoke and debris.

What she saw made her blood run cold.

A massive figure lumbered into view, its hulking form a nightmarish blend of human and beast. Bulging muscles rippled beneath patchy fur, while wickedly curved claws tore into the pavement with each step. But it was the creature's face that truly horrified Rei–a twisted mask of agony and rage, barely recognizable as the hybrid it had once been.

"Oh god," Luna whispered, her voice trembling. "Is that... is that what I think it is?"

Rei nodded grimly. "A feral. But I've never seen one this big or... this violent."

They watched in stunned silence as the feral hybrid tore through the street, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Civilians fled in terror, their screams adding to the hellish symphony of chaos that had engulfed Moreau City.

"We need to stop it," Rei said, her resolve hardening. She reached for the concealed blaster at her hip, grateful they'd thought to arm themselves before rushing headlong into danger.

Luna grabbed her arm. "Are you crazy? We're not equipped to handle something like that! We need to focus on reaching the police station!"

Rei hesitated, torn between her instinct to protect and the logic of Luna's words. Another ear-splitting roar decided for her as a second feral hybrid came crashing through a nearby building.

"You're right," Rei conceded. "Let's move!"

The twins darted from their hiding spot, using their enhanced agility to navigate the debris-strewn streets. They focused on guiding panicked citizens towards the designated evacuation routes, all while dodging the rampaging ferals that seemed to multiply by the minute.

As they worked, Rei's mind raced. What could have caused this outbreak? Feral transformations were rare, usually the result of botched gene-splicing or black-market enhancements. But this... this was something else entirely. The scale and suddenness of the attack pointed to something far more sinister.

A child's scream pierced through the chaos, snapping Rei back to the present. She whirled around to see a young boy, only six or seven, cowering beneath an overturned vendor's cart. A feral hybrid loomed over him, saliva dripping from its twisted maw.

Without hesitation, Rei sprang into action. She vaulted over a pile of rubble, her muscles coiling and releasing with cat-like grace. In mid-air, she drew her gun and fired three precise shots. The stun bolts struck the feral in rapid succession, sending it crashing to the ground in a twitching heap.

Rei landed beside the cart and scooped up the terrified child. "It's okay," she soothed, her voice gentle despite the adrenaline coursing through her veins. "I've got you. Let's find your parents."

As she carried the boy to safety, Rei caught sight of Luna herding a group of shell-shocked office workers towards an evacuation point. The twins locked eyes across the chaos, a silent understanding passing between them. They'd been through hell and back together, but this... this was unlike anything they'd ever faced.

A sudden explosion rocked the ground beneath their feet, sending Rei stumbling. She clutched the child tighter, shielding him with her body as debris rained down around them. When the dust settled, she looked up to see a familiar figure striding through the smoke.

Police Commissioner Fiona Blossom cut an imposing figure in her crisp red suit, her fiery hair a stark contrast to the grime and ash that coated everything else. Her cat ears, a nod to her own genetic enhancements, twitched alertly as she surveyed the devastation.

"Commissioner!" Rei called out, relief washing over her at the sight of a friendly face.

Fiona's head snapped towards them, her eyes widening in recognition. "Rei? Luna? What in the blazes are you two doing here? I told you to meet at my office!”

Before Rei could answer, a feral hybrid burst from a nearby alleyway, its massive form barreling straight for the commissioner. Fiona's hand flew to her hip, drawing her service weapon in one fluid motion. But Rei could see she wouldn't be fast enough.

Time seemed to slow as Rei's enhanced reflexes kicked in. She set the child down and pushed him towards Luna, who had just arrived at her side. In the same motion, Rei launched herself at the charging feral.

Her body collided with the hybrid's massive bulk, throwing off its trajectory just enough to save Fiona. They hit the ground hard, Rei's world exploding into a chaos of flashing claws and gnashing teeth. She fought with every ounce of her genetically enhanced strength, struggling to keep the feral's deadly jaws away from her throat.

A series of rapid-fire shots rang out, and suddenly the hybrid's weight vanished. Rei rolled to her feet, panting heavily, to see Fiona standing over the now-unconscious feral, her weapon still smoking.

"Nice moves," Fiona said, offering Rei a hand up. "Though I have to say, I'm surprised to see Moreau City's favorite pop idols playing hero in the middle of all this."

Rei accepted the help, wincing at the deep scratches that now adorned her arms. "Let's just say we have some experience in high-pressure situations."

Luna joined them, the young boy now safely reunited with his frantic parents. "Commissioner, what's going on? We've never seen an outbreak of mutants before."

Fiona's expression darkened. "That's because this isn't a normal outbreak. We're dealing with something far worse." She glanced around, her eyes narrowing at the destruction surrounding them. "This isn't the place to discuss it. Follow me–we need to get somewhere secure."

As they made their way through the war-torn streets, Rei couldn't shake the feeling that their lives were about to change forever. The glamorous world of K-pop seemed a lifetime away, replaced by the grim reality of a city under siege.

Fiona led them to an armored police transport, its sleek black exterior a stark contrast to the colorful chaos of Moreau City. As they piled inside, Rei glimpsed their reflections in the tinted windows–disheveled, covered in grime, a far cry from the polished pop stars they presented to the world.

The transport's engines hummed to life, lifting them above the devastation below. Rei pressed her face to the window, watching as the full scope of the disaster came into view. Plumes of smoke rose from dozens of locations across the city, while swarms of emergency vehicles crisscrossed the sky lanes.

"It's not just downtown," Luna murmured, her voice thick with disbelief. "The whole city..."

Fiona's grip tightened on the transport's control yoke. "What you're seeing is the result of a coordinated attack. Multiple bio-bombs were detonated simultaneously across Moreau City, releasing an engineered virus that targets genetically spliced individuals."

Rei's blood ran cold. "A virus? That's what's causing the feral transformations?"

Fiona nodded grimly. "It attacks the splice points in a hybrid's genetic code, causing rapid mutation and cognitive breakdown. The result is... well, you've seen it firsthand."

"But why?" Luna demanded, her blue eyes flashing with anger. "Who would do something like this?"

"Fortunately, I know who is responsible," Fiona replied. She guided the transport towards a nondescript building on the outskirts of the chaos. "Which is why we need to discuss that before the virus could spread beyond this city.”

The transport touched down on a hidden landing pad, and Fiona ushered them inside. The building's plain exterior belied its true nature–a high-tech command center humming with activity. Holoscreens covered the walls, displaying real-time data on the outbreak's spread and the city's rapidly dwindling resources.

Rei's enhanced hearing picked up snippets of frantic conversations:

"...quarantine protocols failing in sectors 3 and 7..."

"...overwhelmed, requesting immediate backup..."

"...estimated 40% of the hybrid population affected..."

She shared a worried glance with Luna. As hybrids themselves, they were potentially vulnerable to this engineered virus. The thought sent a shiver down Rei's spine.

Fiona led them to a private office, sealing the door behind them. She slumped into a chair, the weight of responsibility clear in the lines of her face.

"I'm going to be blunt," she said, her green eyes piercing as she looked at the twins. "We're losing this fight. Our forces are overwhelmed, and we don't have a cure for the virus. But there might be a way to stop this before it gets worse."

Rei leaned forward, her ears perked attentively. "How?"

"By going after the source," Fiona replied. She tapped a command into her desk, and a holographic image sprang to life between them. It showed a figure shrouded in shadow, its form wearing a black bodysuit with mechanical limbs, a cape, and a silver mask beneath its hood.

"This is the Acolyte," Fiona explained. "A religious extremist with a twisted hatred for genetic engineering. Our intelligence suggests he's the mastermind behind these attacks."

Luna's tail twitched nervously. "And you want us to... what? Take him down?"

Fiona's gaze hardened. "I want you to find him and eliminate him. You two have skills and connections that my officers don't. You can operate in the shadows, gather intel from sources that won't talk to the police."

Rei's mind reeled. This was far beyond their usual bounty hunting gigs. "Commissioner, with all due respect... why us? We're not assassins."

"No, you're not," Fiona agreed. "But you're also not just pop stars, are you? I've known about your... extracurricular activities for some time now. You're resourceful, skilled, and most importantly, you have a personal stake in this. As hybrids, you understand the gravity of what we're facing."

Rei and Luna exchanged a long look, two years of shared experiences and unspoken communication passing between them in an instant. They'd fought hard to escape the shadows of their past, to build a life of fame and fortune. But now, with their city–their home–on the brink of destruction, could they really turn their backs?

"What about our careers?" Luna asked, though the resignation in her voice suggested she already knew the answer.

Fiona's expression softened slightly. "If we don't stop the Acolyte, there won't be much of a music industry left to have a career in. But if you succeed... let's just say the bounty on his head would set you up for life."

Rei took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the decision pressing down on her. She thought of the terrified civilians they'd helped evacuate, of the monstrous ferals that had once been ordinary hybrids like themselves. She thought of the life they'd built in Moreau City, and how quickly it was all crumbling around them.

"We'll do it," she said finally, her voice steady despite the fear churning in her gut. Luna nodded in agreement, her jaw set with determination.

Fiona's relief was palpable. "Thank you. I know I'm asking a lot, but you may be our only hope of stopping this madness." She handed them each a secure comm device. "These will keep you connected to our intelligence network. Use them to report any leads on the Acolyte's whereabouts. I wished I could send you a team to assist you, but my hands are full.”

Rei smirked. “Don't worry. We will have our own team to help us.”

As they prepared to leave, Fiona caught Rei's arm. "Be careful out there," she warned. "The Acolyte is unlike any opponent you've faced before. He's ruthless, fanatical, and he won't hesitate to kill you if he gets the chance."

Rei nodded grimly. "We understand the risks, Commissioner. We won't let you down."

They left Fiona's office with a sense of grim determination.

As they made their way back to their suite to gather supplies and plan their next move, the weight of their new mission settled heavily on Rei's shoulders.

The familiar corridors of their building felt alien now, the once-bustling hallways eerily quiet. Most of the other residents had already evacuated, leaving behind an unsettling stillness broken only by the distant sounds of chaos from the city beyond.

Rei keyed in the access code to their suite, her enhanced hearing on high alert for any signs of danger. As the door slid open, she breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of their untouched living space. The remnants of their glamorous pop star life – designer clothes, music awards, stacks of fan mail – seemed to mock them now, relics of a simpler time that felt like a lifetime ago.

"We should pack light," Luna said, already moving towards their hidden weapons cache. "Just the essentials and whatever gear we might need to track down the Acolyte."

Rei nodded, forcing herself to focus on the task at hand. She began gathering their most advanced tech–holo-disguise units, long-range trackers, and a few experimental gadgets Hiro had cooked up for them. As she worked, her mind raced with possibilities and potential leads they could follow.

"We should contact Hiro," she suggested. "He might be able to dig up some intel on the Acolyte's movements or–"

A violent crash from the hallway cut her off mid-sentence. Rei froze, her cat ears swiveling towards the sound. Luna was at her side in an instant, gun already drawn.

"What was that?" Luna whispered, her blue eyes wide with alarm.

Before Rei could answer, an inhuman roar shook the very walls of their suite. The twins shared a look of dawning horror as realization set in.

"Ferals," Rei breathed, her heart hammering in her chest. "They've breached the building."

The sound of splintering wood and tearing metal grew closer, accompanied by guttural snarls that sent shivers down Rei's spine. She grabbed her own weapon, falling into a defensive stance beside her sister.

"So much for having time to plan," Luna muttered, a hint of her usual sardonic humor creeping into her voice despite the dire situation.

Rei allowed herself a grim smile. "When has anything ever gone according to plan for us?"

The door to their suite buckled inward, metal groaning under the assault of superhuman strength. Rei tightened her grip on her blaster, knowing that in moments, they'd be fighting for their lives against the very citizens they'd sworn to protect.

As the first feral burst through the mangled remains of their door, its twisted form a nightmarish perversion of the hybrid it had once been, Rei steeled herself for the battle ahead. Whatever happened next, she knew one thing for certain – their lives as Moreau City's beloved pop idols were over.

Their bounty hunting part-time job has gone full-time.
