Rei’s heart pounded as she sprinted through the theme park, her eyes scanning frantically for any sign of Mr. Dream. Luna raced alongside her, their footsteps echoing off the empty attractions. The first rays of dawn were just beginning to pierce the sky, casting long shadows across the abandoned fairgrounds.
“There!” Luna shouted, pointing toward the exit.
Rei’s gaze snapped to where Luna indicated. Sure enough, she spotted a portly figure in a gaudy suit hurrying toward the parking lot. Mr. Dream glanced over his shoulder, his eyes widening in fear as he caught sight of his pursuers.
“Stop!” Rei yelled, but the man only increased his pace.
They burst out of the main gate; the gravel crunching under their feet as they hit the parking lot. Mr. Dream fumbled with his keys, dropping them in his haste. As he bent to retrieve them, Rei seized her chance.
She launched herself forward, tackling Mr. Dream to the ground. They hit the asphalt hard, and Rei felt the air rush out of her lungs. Ignoring the pain, she quickly rolled the man onto his stomach and yanked his arms behind his back.
“You’re under arrest, buster,” she panted, reaching for her handcuffs.
Mr. Dream sobbed, his body shaking beneath her. “Please,” he whimpered, “you don’t understand. This park is all I have. It’s been in my family for generations.”
Rei felt a flicker of pity, but she squashed it ruthlessly. “You should have thought of that before you helped a psychopath murder innocent girls,” she snapped, clicking the cuffs into place.
Luna jogged up, her face flushed from the chase. “Nice takedown,” she said, offering Rei a hand up.
Rei accepted it gratefully, hauling herself to her feet. She kept one hand firmly on Mr. Dream’s shoulder, preventing him from rising. “Thanks,” she replied. “My inner kitty instinct kicked in.”
The wail of sirens filled the air, growing steadily louder. Moments later, the police officers reached them, led by Fiona. Her expression flashed with relief as she approached.
“Good work, detectives,” she said, nodding to Rei and Luna. She gestured to two uniformed officers. “Get him up and into a car.”

As the officers hauled Mr. Dream to his feet, Rei noticed the tear tracks on his face, the defeated slump of his shoulders. Despite everything, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy. This man’s poor choices had cost him everything.
Luna voiced the question Rei had been considering. “What’s going to happen to the park?”
Fiona sighed, running a hand through her hair. “Honestly? I’m not sure. There will be an investigation, of course. But hopefully, we can find a way to keep it running under new management. It would be a shame to see such a beloved place shut down permanently.”
Rei nodded, her gaze drifting back to the park entrance. The whimsical facade felt different now, tainted by the knowledge of what had transpired within its walls. And yet, she couldn’t deny the fleeting moments of joy she’d experienced here as well.
“Hey,” a familiar voice called out. Rei turned to see Rally and Hiro approaching, their expressions a mix of concern and relief.
“Are you two okay?” Hiro asked, his eyes flicking between Rei and Luna.
Luna managed a small smile. “We’re fine. Just a little banged up.”
Rally stepped closer to Rei, his hand brushing against hers. “Some date, huh?” he said ruefully. “I’m sorry it turned into such a nightmare.”
Rei shook her head. “Don’t apologize. If anything, we should be thanking you for bringing us here.”
“Still,” Rally insisted, “I promise our next date will be better. No criminals, no chases, just us.” He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to Rei’s lips.
Rei felt herself melting into the kiss, the adrenaline of the chase giving way to a different kind of excitement. When they parted, she caught Luna watching them, a faint blush coloring her cheeks. Hiro stood beside her, looking slightly awkward but pleased.
“I’m glad you two worked things out,” Luna said softly.
Rei smiled, feeling a warmth in her chest that had nothing to do with the rising sun. “Me too. And I’m happy you and Hiro might get it on too.”
Luna ducked her head, her blush deepening. “We’re taking it slow,” she murmured.
As the police cleared the scene, the four of them turned to face the park one last time. The sun had fully cleared the horizon now, bathing Happy Dream World in a golden light that seemed to wash away some of the darkness of the night.
Rei leaned against Rally, feeling the solid warmth of him beside her. She thought back on their interrupted date–the nervousness, the excitement, the brief moments of joy before everything went sideways. It hadn’t been the romantic evening they’d planned, but strangely, it had brought them closer together.
“We should probably head out,” Hiro said after a few minutes of contemplative silence. “I don’t know about you guys, but I could use about twelve hours of sleep.”
Luna chuckled. “That sounds amazing right about now.”
As they made their way to their air cars, Rei found herself lost in thought. The case was closed, the killer and his accomplice behind bars. And yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something fundamental had shifted. She glanced at Rally, catching his eye. He smiled, and Rei felt a flutter in her stomach.
Whatever came next, she realized, she wouldn’t be facing it alone. And that, more than anything, gave her hope for the future.
