Book 3: Chapter 4

Book 3: Chapter 4

Rei's nose wrinkled as she stepped into the murky water, her boots sinking into the sludge with a sickening squelch. The stench of decay and waste assaulted her senses, nearly making her gag. She activated the filtration system in her mask, grateful for the clean air that flooded her lungs.

"Remind me again why we couldn't just send some drones down here?" Luna grumbled, her voice slightly distorted through her own mask's comms.

Rei rolled her eyes, though her sister couldn't see it in the dim light. "Because drones can't adapt to unexpected situations. And with a creature this dangerous, we need to be ready for anything."

They moved forward cautiously, their helmet lights cutting through the gloom. The tunnel stretched before them, a labyrinth of decay and forgotten infrastructure. Rei's enhanced hearing picked up the skittering of small creatures in the shadows, and she suppressed a shudder.

"I wish Rally was here," Rei muttered, more to herself than to Luna. "His nose would be useful right about now."

Luna snickered. "Aww, does someone miss snuggling with her dog boy?"

"Shut up," Rei snapped, heat rising to her cheeks. "At least I've actually made a move. You still haven't even kissed Hiro yet."

"Hey! That's different-"

A loud splash echoed through the tunnel, cutting off Luna's retort. Both sisters froze, weapons raised. Rei's eyes darted around, searching for any sign of movement.

"Did you hear that?" she whispered.

Luna nodded, her body tense. "Yeah. Think it's our target?"

"Maybe. Or it could be one of the lovely mutated residents down here. Stay sharp."

They pressed on, moving deeper into the bowels of Moreau City. The tunnels twisted and turned, branching off in different directions. Rei consulted the holo map projected from her wrist device, ensuring they stayed on course.

As they rounded a corner, Rei's foot caught on something submerged. She stumbled, barely catching herself before face-planting in the filthy water. Luna grabbed her arm, steadying her.

"You okay?" Luna asked, concern clear in her voice.

Rei nodded, then frowned as she noticed what she'd tripped over. "Wait, a second..."

She reached down, fishing out a torn piece of fabric. It was slick with some kind of viscous black substance.

"What is that?" Luna leaned in for a closer look.

Rei's brow furrowed. "I'm not sure, but I bet it has something to do with our target. Let's keep moving."

They continued their trek; the tunnels growing narrower and more treacherous. Rei's enhanced senses were on high alert, cataloging every sound and movement. The oppressive darkness seemed to close in around them, broken only by the beams of their helmet lights.

A low rumble reverberated through the tunnel, causing loose debris to rain down from above. Rei instinctively raised her arm to shield her face.

"That didn't sound good," Luna muttered.

Rei shook her head. "No, it didn't. We need to be careful. These tunnels could be unstable."

They pressed on, their progress slowing as they navigated around piles of rubble and sections where the ceiling had partially collapsed. The air grew thicker, filled with dust and the acrid smell of decay.

As they reached a junction where three tunnels converged, Rei held up a hand, signaling Luna to stop. She cocked her head, listening intently.

"Do you hear that?" she whispered.

Luna frowned, straining her ears. "Hear what?"

"Voices. And footsteps. Coming from the left tunnel."

They exchanged a glance, both thinking the same thing. It was unlikely the creature knew how to chatter like two bantering women. Which means…

"Well, well. Look what the cat dragged in," a familiar voice drawled.

Rei gritted her teeth as two figures emerged from the shadows. The Tiger Girls. Snow and Flake stepped into the light, their black hazardous suits and gas masks gleaming despite the grime of the sewers.

"Fancy meeting you here," Flake said with a smirk. "Did you get lost on your way to a concert?"

Luna bristled. "We could ask you the same thing. Shouldn't you be shaking your tail at a strip club?"

Snow's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Watch your mouth, pop star. You're out of your depth down here."

Rei stepped between them, her hand raised in a placating gesture. "Let's all calm down. We're here for the same reason, aren't we? To catch that creature."

"Maybe," Snow replied coolly. "But we'll be the ones claiming the bounty."

"Is that so?" Rei countered, her voice level despite the anger bubbling beneath the surface. "Because from where I'm standing, you haven't had any more luck finding it than we have."

A tense silence fell over the group, broken only by the distant drip of water and the hum of their equipment. Rei could feel Luna bristling beside her, ready for a fight. But starting a brawl down here would only alert their target - if it hadn't already noticed their presence.

Flake was the first to break the stalemate. "She's right, Snow. We've been down here for hours and haven't found squat."

Snow shot her partner a glare but didn't argue. After a moment, she sighed. "Fine. What do you propose?"

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Rei relaxed slightly, sensing an opportunity. "A temporary alliance. We pool our resources, find this thing together. Once it's contained, we can argue about who gets the credit."

The Tiger Girls exchanged a look, having one of those silent conversations that only close partners could manage. Finally, Snow nodded.

"Alright. But don't think this makes us friends. The second that creature is down, all bets are off."

"Wouldn't dream of it," Luna muttered.

With the uneasy truce established, the four of them began comparing notes. Snow and Flake had explored the eastern tunnels thoroughly, while Rei and Luna had covered the western section. That left the northern passages as the most likely location for their quarry.

As they discussed strategy, Rei couldn't help but feel a grudging respect for the Tiger Girls. Their enhanced senses and physical abilities made them formidable hunters. If they could set aside their rivalry long enough to work together, they might actually stand a chance against this creature.

"We should split into pairs," Rei suggested. "Cover more ground that way."

Snow nodded. "Agreed. But I'm not letting either of you out of my sight. Flake, you go with the bubblegum princess. I'll take her sister."

Luna opened her mouth to protest, but Rei cut her off with a sharp look. Now wasn't the time for petty squabbles.

"Fine," Rei said. "Luna, you and Flake take the left fork. Snow and I will go right. Keep in constant communication, and if anyone spots the target, do not engage without backup. Understood?"

A chorus of reluctant agreement met her words. As they prepared to separate, Luna pulled Rei aside.

"Are you sure about this?" she whispered. "I don't trust them."

Rei squeezed her sister's hand. "Neither do I. But right now, they're our best shot at finding this thing. Just... be careful, okay?"

Luna nodded, her eyes serious behind her mask. "You too."

With a final shared look, the twins parted ways. Rei fell into step beside Snow, acutely aware of the tension between them. They tiptoed through the tunnel, each hyper-aware of their surroundings.

While strolling through the tunnel, Rei glanced at Snow. “So… Ex-strippers, huh? Thought you could become be as exotic dancers?”

Snow snarled at her. “How the hell did you know that?”

Rei giggled. “Me and my sister have sources too. Hard to believe you two would do dirty business instead of reaching the corpo ladders here.”

Snow hissed behind her mask. “You don’t know what it was like in the underbelly. Sometimes you have to sell your body to survive. When we lost our fame and pleasure, we had to hunt on the streets. And no corpo would hire so-called sluts like me and my sister.”

Rei shrugged. “Well, at least me and my sister chosen a career that didn’t force us to show off our bodies. Maybe you should try singing for a living.”

Snow laughed. “Now out cup of tea.”

“Seriously?”

“You and your sister were born rich. That’s why you got it easier than me and my sister.”

Rei glared at Snow. “That isn’t true. We lost our family back in South Korea. They put us in a shitty orphanage with sick children and uncomfortable rooms. Mys sister and I had to work our asses off to achieve our dream before moving here. You aren’t the only ones who suffered.”

Snow stopped as she paused. “Uh…. Sorry?”

“And what gives you the right to sabotage me and my sister’s reputation?” Rei shouted, pointing her claw at Snow. “You think taking all the credit will bring you and your sister back to stripping?”

Snow stepped in front of Rei. “Just to let you know so you can shut up… One, Me and my sister loved stripping. We loved it like people love sex. But we can never go back to it. And two, competition is bad business. If you want to be on top, you take out your obstacles. And being on top is the only way to stay alive here.”

Rei glared back at Snow. “But why Luna and I? We never stood in anyone's way.”

Snow shrugged and continued walking through the debris covering the filthy water . “I guess you fur balls are easy.”

Rei widened her feline pink eyes. “Easy? You think we're easy to -”

Snow held up a hand, signaling Rei to stop. She pointed to a section of wall where the concrete had crumbled away, revealing a smaller passage beyond.

"Look," Snow whispered. "Those claw marks. Something big went through here."

Rei examined the gouges in the stone, a chill running down her spine. Whatever made those marks was far larger and more powerful than anything they'd expected.

"Should we call the others?" she asked.

Snow shook her head. "Not yet. Let's see where this leads first."

They squeezed through the opening, finding themselves in a narrow maintenance shaft. The air here was stagnant, thick with the smell of rot and something else - a sickly sweet odor that made Rei's stomach churn.

They hadn't gone more than a few meters when Snow suddenly stiffened, her ears twitching. "Do you hear that?"

Rei strained her enhanced hearing, picking up a faint, wet sound. Like something large and viscous moving through the tunnels.

"It's close," she breathed, her heart pounding.

Snow nodded, her tail lashing back and forth. "Very close. We should-"

A deafening roar that shook the very foundations of the tunnel cut her words off. Rei stumbled, thrown off balance by the vibrations. She reached for Snow instinctively, steadying herself against the other woman's arm.

"What the hell was that?" Rei gasped.

Before Snow could answer, the floor beneath them gave way with a sickening crack. Rei's stomach lurched as they plummeted into darkness, the world around them dissolving into chaos.

She glimpsed Luna and Flake falling nearby, their startled cries mixing with her own. Then something solid slammed into her back, driving the air from her lungs.

Rei tumbled head over heels, her body bouncing off walls and debris as she fell deeper into the abyss. Her world narrowed to a kaleidoscope of pain and disorientation.

Just when she thought the fall would never end, she hit water with a bone-jarring splash. The impact stunned her, and for a terrifying moment, she couldn't tell which way was up. Her lungs burned as she flailed in the murky depths, desperate for air.

Strong hands grabbed her shoulders, hauling her to the surface. Rei broke through with a gasp, coughing and sputtering as she gulped in precious oxygen.

"I've got you," Snow's voice came through the comms, strained but steady. "Just keep kicking."

Rei forced her battered body to move, swimming alongside Snow toward a partially submerged ledge. They hauled themselves out of the water, collapsing onto the slimy stone.

For a long moment, Rei just lay there, every inch of her body screaming in protest. She ran a quick mental inventory - nothing felt broken, but she'd definitely have an impressive collection of bruises come morning.

"Luna?" she called out, her voice hoarse. "Luna, can you hear me?"

Static crackled through the comms, then Luna's voice came through, weak but alive. "I'm here. Flake's with me. We're okay... I think."

Rei sagged with relief. "Thank god. Where are you?"

"Not sure," Luna replied. "Some kind of chamber. It's dark, but... Rei, there's something down here with us. I can hear it moving."

A chill ran down Rei's spine. She pushed herself up, ignoring the protest of her battered muscles. "Stay put. We'll find you."

"Hurry," Luna whispered, fear clear in her voice.

Rei turned to Snow, who was already on her feet, scanning their surroundings. They had landed in a vast cavern, far larger than any of the tunnels they'd explored before. The ceiling vanished in darkness, and the stagnant water stretched out in all directions.

"Any idea where we are?" Rei asked.

Snow shook her head. "No, but if I had to guess... I'd say we just found our target's lair."

As if in response to her words, a low, gurgling growl echoed through the cavern. Rei's blood ran cold as she realized the sound was coming from everywhere at once.

"We need to move," she said, fighting to keep her voice steady. "Now."

Snow nodded grimly. "Agreed. Let's find the others and get the hell out of here."

They set off along the narrow ledge, their helmet lights barely penetrating the oppressive darkness. Rei's enhanced vision strained to make out details in the gloom, but all she could see was endless water and slime-covered stone.

The growling grew louder as they moved, punctuated by wet, slapping sounds that made Rei's skin crawl. Whatever was down here with them, it was big. And it was getting closer.

"There!" Snow hissed, pointing to a flickering light in the distance. "That has to be them."

Rei nodded, picking up the pace. They were so focused on reaching Luna and Flake that they almost missed the ripple in the water beside them.

Almost.

Snow's enhanced reflexes saved them. She shoved Rei hard, sending them both sprawling onto the ledge just as a massive, dripping tentacle lashed out of the water. It slammed into the spot where they had been standing, leaving a crater in the stone.

Rei scrambled to her feet, her heart pounding. She glimpsed something enormous moving beneath the surface - a writhing mass of inky blackness that seemed to absorb all light.

"Run!" she yelled, grabbing Snow's arm and yanking her forward.

They sprinted along the ledge, the creature's roars shaking the very air around them. More tentacles burst from the water, slamming into the walls and sending showers of debris raining down.

Rei could see Luna and Flake now, trapped on a small island of stone as the creature's appendages lashed the surrounding water. They were firing their weapons, but the blasts seemed to have no effect on the monster's amorphous form.

"We're coming!" Rei shouted into her comms. "Just hold on!"

But even as the words left her mouth, she knew they might already be too late. The ledge beneath their feet was crumbling, and the creature was closing in from all sides. They were trapped, with no way out and nowhere left to run.

As another tentacle smashed into the stone mere inches from her feet, Rei realized with a sinking feeling that they had drastically underestimated their prey. This wasn't just a hunt anymore.

It was a fight for survival.

As the creature closed in on them, Flake drew a small red gun and fired a beam of light at the creature. It burst, casting a blinding flash in the creature’s face.

The creature retreated into the darkness, moaning like a frightened pig. As the light faded, the girls released their breaths in a collective sigh.

“Way to go, sis!” Snow slapped Flake’s back as they laughed together.

Luna squeezed Rei’s hand, looking grateful to be alive. Rei smiled back at her and then turned to face Flake. “That’s for saving our asses.”

Flake twirled her flash gun on her finger and placed it into her holster. “Flashing always come in handy.”

After the women’s laughter subsided, Luna gazed into the darkness where the creature had disappeared. “Now what?”

Rei check her gun and reloaded it. “Now we continue the hunt.”
