Book 2: Chapter 6

The rusted maintenance door groaned in protest as Rei forced it open, revealing a dimly lit tunnel stretching into darkness. She exchanged a tense glance with Rally and Hiro before stepping inside, her hand hovering near the holster at her hip.

“Stay sharp,” Rei whispered, her eyes adjusting to the gloom. “No telling what kind of security this psycho has down here.”

Rally grunted in acknowledgment, hefting his small gun. “I’ve got point. Hiro, watch our six.”

They moved forward in tight formation, their footsteps echoing off the damp concrete walls. The air grew thick and stale, carrying the faint scent of ozone and decay. Rei’s skin crawled with each step, her senses on high alert for any sign of danger.

A faint whirring noise reached her ears, growing louder as they approached a junction in the tunnel. Rei held up a fist, signaling the others to halt. She peered around the corner, her breath catching in her throat at the sight before her.

A pair of sleek, spider-like robots patrolled the intersection, their multiple eyes scanning in all directions. Razor-sharp appendages clicked against the floor as they moved, ready to slice through any intruder.

“Shit,” Rei hissed, ducking back. “Two hostiles. Looks like Mr. Dream wasn’t exaggerating about the security.”

Hiro’s eyes narrowed as he processed the information. “I might be able to hack them, but I’d need to get close. Too risky.”

“We don’t have time for subtlety,” Rally growled, raising his gun. “I say we blast ‘em and move on.”

Rei shook her head. “Too loud. We need to stay under the radar as long as possible.” Her mind raced, weighing their options. Every second wasted was another moment her sister remained in danger.

A plan formed in her mind, desperate but feasible. “I’ve got an idea. Cover me.”

Before the others could protest, Rei darted around the corner. She sprinted towards the nearest robot, her footsteps impossibly light. One year of training kicked in as she moved with liquid grace, evading the machine’s sensors.

The robot’s head swiveled towards her, appendages raised to strike. But Rei was already in motion, launching herself into a backflip that carried her over the metallic monstrosity. As she sailed through the air, her hand shot out, fingers closing around a compact disc attached to her belt.

Time seemed to slow as Rei twisted, slapping the electromagnetic pulse device onto the robot’s carapace. She landed in a crouch behind it, rolling to avoid the second machine’s attack.

“Now!” she shouted.

Rally’s finger tightened on the trigger, sending bullets down the corridor. The EMP disc activated, sending arcs of blue electricity crackling over both robots. They shuddered and collapsed, their systems fried.

Rei stood, brushing dust from her clothes. “Let’s move. No way that went unnoticed.”

They pressed deeper into the labyrinth, encountering increasingly complex security measures. Laser grids crisscrossed corridors, forcing them to contort their bodies into impossible positions to avoid triggering alarms. Pressure-sensitive floor panels threatened to drop them into hidden pits at the slightest misstep.

Hiro’s expertise proved invaluable as they navigated the electronic hurdles. His fingers flew over his portable terminal, bypassing firewalls and rerouting security protocols. “Whoever designed this system is good,” he muttered, sweat beading on his brow. “But not good enough.”

Rally’s brute strength came into play when they encountered a massive steel door blocking their path. He planted his feet, muscles straining, as he forced the hydraulic pistons to give way. The door groaned open, revealing a new set of challenges beyond.

Through it all, Rei’s focus never wavered. Every obstacle overcome, every security measure bypassed, brought her one step closer to her sister. The thought of Luna trapped in this madman’s playground fueled her determination, pushing her beyond her limits.

As they ventured further into the depths of the complex, the décor gradually transformed. Sterile metal walls gave way to garish colors and whimsical designs. Playing cards and chess pieces adorned the walls, while oversized pocket watches ticked away ominously.

“We must be getting close,” Rei said, her voice tight with anticipation. “This matches the Alice in Wonderland theme Mr. Dream mentioned.”

A distant scream echoed through the corridors, chilling Rei to her core. Was that Luna? Or another of the Cheshire Cat’s victims?

“Hold on, sis,” Rei whispered, her hands clenching into fists. “I’m coming for you.”

Turning a corner, they approached a door with the face of a grinning cat painted on it. The Cheshire Cat’s lair must be on the other side, along with all the answers Rei sought.

Rally hefted his gun, a grim smile playing on his muzzle. “Ready to crash this tea party?”

Rei nodded, her eyes blazing with determination. “Let’s end this nightmare.”

As Hiro worked to bypass the final security measures, Rei steeled herself for whatever horrors awaited on the other side. The Cheshire Cat had put her sister in hell, and now it was time to return the favor.

With a hiss of hydraulics, the door opened. Rei took a deep breath, centering herself for the confrontation to come. Whatever sick games the Cheshire Cat had in store, she would beat him at his own twisted version of Wonderland.

For Luna. For justice. For an end to this madness.

Luna’s footsteps resonated against the stark white walls as she turned another corner in the seemingly infinite maze. Her breath caught in her throat as she stumbled upon a scene that was both familiar and horrifyingly wrong.

Before her stretched a long table, draped in a stained and tattered cloth. Mismatched chairs of various sizes surrounded it, some tipped over as if their occupants had fled in a hurry. Chipped teacups and cracked saucers littered the surface, alongside rusted knives and bent forks. At the head of the table sat a figure that made Luna’s skin crawl–a robotic approximation of the Mad Hatter, its glassy eyes fixed on her with an unblinking stare.

“Welcome, Alice, to our little tea party,” the Cheshire Cat’s voice purred from hidden speakers. “I do hope you’ll join us. It would be terribly rude to refuse, after all.”

Luna’s eyes narrowed as she surveyed the scene, every muscle in her body tense and ready to spring into action. “I think I’ll pass,” she muttered. “Your hospitality looks too scary to me.”

A low chuckle filled the air. “Oh, but I must insist. The Hatter so hates to be kept waiting. And I’m afraid the only way forward is through this charming little gathering.”

As if on cue, the robotic Hatter jerked to life, its movements jerky and unnatural. “You’re late for tea!” it screeched, its voice a cacophony of grinding gears and static. “Naughty, naughty Alice!”

Luna barely had time to duck as the Hatter flung a teacup in her direction. It shattered against the wall behind her, shards of porcelain raining down. She rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding a spray of scalding liquid that hissed and bubbled where it hit the floor.

“Acid,” Luna gasped, her heart pounding. “Because regular tea would be too boring, right?”

She scrambled to her feet, eyes darting around the room for any advantage. The table seemed to stretch on forever, a gauntlet of deadly traps waiting to be sprung. To her left, she spotted a door–her only chance of escape from this madhouse.

But getting there wouldn’t be easy. As Luna took a cautious step forward, the floor beneath her feet shifted. She leapt back just as a section of tiles gave way, revealing a pit filled with razor-sharp spikes.

“Careful now,” the Cheshire Cat taunted. “We wouldn’t want you to miss a step in this delightful dance.”

Luna gritted her teeth, forcing herself to focus. She couldn’t let the disembodied voice get to her. There had to be a way through this nightmare–she just had to find it.

Her eyes locked onto an oversized teapot near the center of the table. If she could reach it, maybe she could use it as a weapon against the robotic Hatter. But the distance seemed impossibly vast, a no-man's-land of hidden dangers.

Taking a deep breath, Luna steeled herself for what she knew would be a perilous dash. She crouched low, muscles coiled like springs, then launched herself forward.

The world became a blur of motion and danger. Luna vaulted over upturned chairs, her feet barely touching the ground as she navigated the treacherous floor. Panels dropped away beneath her, revealing more spikes and bubbling pools of acid. Robotic arms equipped with razor-sharp knives swung out from the walls, forcing her to duck and weave.

“You are very very rude!” the Hatter screeched, its voice rising to a fever pitch. It hurled more teacups in Luna’s direction, a barrage of porcelain projectiles that threatened to take her down.

Luna’s breath came in ragged gasps as she pushed herself to the limit. A knife sliced through the air inches from her face, leaving a thin red line across her cheek. She faltered, almost losing her footing, but steadied herself just in time.

With one last burst of speed, Luna reached for the giant teapot. She grabbed its handle, using her momentum to swing it around and smash it into the Hatter’s metallic face. The robot’s head snapped back, sparks flying as its circuits shorted out.

But Luna had no time to celebrate her small victory. The table beneath her feet tilted, dishes and cutlery sliding towards the far end. She scrambled for purchase, her fingers clawing at the tablecloth as she slid inexorably towards the door–and the yawning chasm that had opened up before it.

“It seems our tea party is coming to an end,” the Cheshire Cat observed with mock sadness. “Such a pity. We were having such fun.”

Luna’s mind raced as she approached the edge. With her momentum unstoppable, her only chance lay in somehow crossing the pit.Her eyes locked onto a chandelier hanging just beyond the chasm, its crystal pendants tinkling ominously.

As she reached the precipice, Luna gathered every ounce of strength she had left. She pushed off hard, launching herself into the air. For a heart-stopping moment, she hung suspended over the abyss, time seeming to slow to a crawl.

Her hands shot out, fingers straining as they closed around one of the chandelier’s chains. The sudden jolt of her weight nearly tore her grip loose, but Luna held on with grim determination. She swung back and forth; the chandelier creaking dangerously.

With a final, desperate effort, Luna released her hold at the apex of her swing. She sailed through the air, arms pinwheeling, and crashed onto the other side of the pit. She rolled to absorb the impact, coming to a stop mere inches from the door.

Gasping for breath, Luna dragged herself to her feet. Every muscle in her body screamed in protest, but she forced herself to move. She yanked open the door and stumbled through, leaving the chaos of the Mad Hatter’s tea party behind.

As the door slammed shut behind her, Luna sagged against the wall, her legs threatening to give out. She closed her eyes, trying to calm her racing heart.

“Well done, my dear,” the Cheshire Cat’s voice drifted to her, softer now but no less menacing. “You’ve survived another of our little games. But don’t rest on your laurels–the best is yet to come.”

Luna’s eyes snapped open, blazing with defiance. “Is that supposed to scare me?” she spat. “I’m still here, you bully. And I’m going to keep fighting until I find a way out of this hellhole.”

A low chuckle echoed through the corridor. “Such spirit! I do so enjoy a challenge. Rest assured, Alice, your resolve will be tested to its very limits before our story reaches its end.”

As the voice faded away, Luna pushed herself off the wall. Her body ached, and fresh cuts and bruises throbbed with each movement. Dirt covered her bare feet as her soles arched. But she refused to give in to exhaustion or despair.

“Rei,” she whispered, her sister’s name a talisman against the darkness. “I know you’re out there. I know you’re coming for me. Just... hurry, okay?”

With a deep breath, Luna squared her shoulders and faced the path ahead. The Cheshire Cat’s twisted version of Wonderland had thrown everything it had at her, and she was still standing. Whatever came next, she would face it head-on.

Her eyes scanned the corridor ahead, alert for any sign of the next trial. What twisted version of Wonderland would she encounter next? The Queen of Hearts’ croquet match, with flesh-and-blood hedgehogs as balls and razor-sharp flamingos as mallets? A deadly game of riddles with Tweedledee and Tweedledum, where the wrong answer meant instant death?

Luna shook her head, trying to clear away the morbid thoughts. Speculation would only distract her. She needed to stay focused, to be ready for anything.

As she rounded another corner, Luna’s steps faltered. The stark white walls of the maze had given way to something new–a forest of oversized mushrooms and twisted trees, their branches reaching out like gnarled fingers. A thick mist swirled around her ankles, obscuring the ground and making each step treacherous.

Luna’s jaw clenched as she surveyed this unfamiliar landscape. The Cheshire Cat was changing the rules again, transforming the very environment to suit his sick games. But she wouldn’t let it throw her off balance. Whatever challenges this psychedelic forest held, she would face them head-on.

With a deep breath, Luna stepped into the misty woodland. The game continued, and she was determined to see it through to the end. Whatever it took, she would find her way out of this maze, beat the Cheshire Cat at his own game, and return to the real world–to Rei, to freedom, to life beyond this twisted Wonderland.

The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger and deadly traps. But Luna pressed on, her spirit unbroken, her resolve stronger than ever. The Cheshire Cat had underestimated her once–she wouldn’t give him the chance to do so again.
