The arena pulsed with anticipation, a living organism of excited fans and flashing lights. Rei took a deep breath, savoring the electric atmosphere backstage. She adjusted her sequined top, its weight familiar against her skin. Beside her, Luna stretched her arms above her head, eyes closed in concentration.
"Ready?" Rei asked, her voice barely audible over the crowd's roar.
Luna's eyes snapped open, a grin spreading across her face. "Heck yeah, sis!"
The stage manager's voice crackled through their earpieces. "Thirty seconds!"
Rei and Luna exchanged a quick fist bump, a ritual born from countless performances. As the first beats of their hit single thundered through the arena, they strode onto the stage with practiced confidence.
The sea of faces before them blurred into a mass of excitement and adoration. Rei's muscle memory took over as she and Luna launched into their choreography. Their voices soared in perfect harmony, years of training on every note.
Rei's body moved on autopilot, allowing her to drink in the moment. Sweat beaded on her forehead as she executed a spin. Luna mirrored her movements flawlessly, their twin bond apparent even in performance.
The crowd's energy was intoxicating. Rei felt it flow through her, amplifying her excitement. She caught glimpses of homemade signs, some fans singing along with tears streaming down their faces. This connection, this ability to touch people's hearts, was why she endured the grueling schedules and constant scrutiny.
As they hit the bridge of the song, Rei and Luna's voices intertwined in a breathtaking harmony. Rei felt a familiar rush of pride in her sister's talent. Together, they were unstoppable.
The final chorus approached, and Rei poured every ounce of energy into her performance. She and Luna hit their ending pose in perfect sync as the last note rang out. For a heartbeat, there was silence. Then the arena erupted in deafening cheers.
Rei's chest heaved as she waved to the crowd, her smile genuine despite her exhaustion. Luna grabbed her hand, and they took a final bow before exiting the stage.
"That was incredible!" Luna exclaimed as soon as they were out of earshot of the audience. Her eyes sparkled with post-performance adrenaline.
Rei nodded, still catching her breath. "Did you see the girl in the front row? I thought she was going to pass out!"
They made their way to their dressing room, accepting water bottles from harried-looking staff members. Rei collapsed onto the plush couch, her legs suddenly feeling like jelly. Luna perched on the makeup counter, scrolling through her holo phone.
"Social media's blowing up already," Luna reported. "Looks like we killed it."
Rei smiled, about to respond, when her holo phone buzzed. She fished it out of her bag, expecting a congratulatory message from their parents or manager. Instead, Rally's name flashed on the screen. Her heartbeat quickened as she opened the text.
"Armed robbery in progress, two blocks from the arena. The bounty is two thousand cryptos. You in?"
Rei's exhaustion evaporated, replaced by a familiar surge of adrenaline. She looked up at Luna, who was watching her curiously.
"Rally?" Luna asked, raising an eyebrow.
Rei nodded, already standing. "There's a situation nearby. You up for some bounty-hunting action?"
Luna's eyes lit up. "Always."
They moved with practiced efficiency, stripping off their stage outfits and wiping away layers of performance makeup. Rei pulled on her pink leather jacket and shorts, feeling the comforting weight of her hidden gun holster. Luna combed her short blue hair, all traces of the bubbly K-pop star vanishing as she donned her gear.
Rei checked her gun, ensuring she fully loaded it. The weight of it in her hand grounded her, a reminder of the double life she led. By day, she was half of the chart-topping duo, Luna and Rei. By night, she and her sister fought crime alongside Rally, risking everything to protect their city.
"Ready?" Rei asked, zipping up her jacket.
Luna nodded, her expression serious. "Let's do this."
They were halfway to the door when a sharp knock made them freeze. Ms. Kim's voice carried through the wood, stern and slightly exasperated.
"Girls? The meet and greet starts in ten minutes. Where are you?"
Rei and Luna exchanged panicked glances. They had completely forgotten about their post-show obligations. Rei's mind raced, torn between her duty as an idol and her desire to help Rally.
"Um, we'll be right there, Ms. Kim!" Luna called out, her voice impressively steady. "Just freshening up!"
Rei's holo phone buzzed again. Another text from Rally: "Hurry if you can. Situation escalating."
She looked at Luna, conflict written across her face. Luna nodded almost imperceptibly, understanding without words.
"Go," Luna whispered. "I'll cover for you."
Gratitude washed over Rei. She squeezed her sister's hand before slipping out the back door of the dressing room, her heart pounding with a of excitement and guilt.

As she navigated the maze-like corridors of the arena, Rei's mind whirled. How long could Luna keep Ms. Kim at bay? Would the fans notice her absence? And most pressingly, what danger was Rally facing while she made her escape?
Rei emerged into the cool night air, the sounds of the arena fading behind her. She took a deep breath, centering herself. At that moment, she wasn't Rei, the K-pop star. She was Rei, the bounty hunter, ready to face whatever challenges the night might bring.
With one last glance at Rally's text, she broke into a run, melting into the shadows of the city she had sworn to protect.
*****
Rei's heart pounded as she approached the fast diner, her senses on high alert. The neon sign flickers weakly, casting an eerie glow over the deserted parking lot. She crouched behind a dumpster, assessing the situation.
Through the grimy windows, she could make out three hulking figures. Rei's eyes narrowed as she took in their appearance. Human-bear hybrids, just as Rally had described. She suppressed a shudder. Hybrids were common enough, but these three exuded a feral energy that set her on edge.
Rei slipped around to the back of the building, finding a service entrance left ajar. She eased it open, wincing at the slight creak. The kitchen was empty, the staff was presumably held hostage in the dining area. The smell of grease and fear hung heavy in the air.
Creeping forward, Rei positioned herself behind a row of industrial fridges. From here, she had a clear view of the dining room without exposing herself. She took in the scene; her trained eye cataloging every detail.
The largest of the three Humanimals, a woman with matted fur and a stained tank top, loomed over the grill. Her voice carried clear, a grating screech that made Rei's ears ache.
"I said I want them burgers, and I want 'em now!" She slammed a meaty paw on the counter, causing the terrified cook to flinch. "Mama Bear's hungry, and you don't want to see me angry!"
Rei's gaze shifted to a younger bear, scrawny compared to his mother but still imposing. He was rifling through the cash register, stuffing bills into a grimy backpack.
"Hurry up, Baby!" Mama Bear snapped. "We ain't got all night!"
The third hybrid, a hulking male Rei assumed was Papa Bear, paced in front of a group of hostages huddled in a booth. His claws clicked against the linoleum as he moved.
"Any of y'all think about bein' a hero," he growled, "and you'll be seein' what these claws can do up close."
Rei's thoughts quickened, devising a strategy. She needed to neutralize Papa and Baby Bear quickly, leaving Mama isolated. It wouldn't be easy, but she'd faced worse odds.
She slipped a small canister from her belt–a non-lethal smoke grenade. With a practiced flick, she sent it rolling across the floor, where it came to rest beneath an empty table.
"What in tarnation-" Papa Bear's words stopped as the canister hissed to life, filling the diner with thick, obscuring smoke.
Rei moved swiftly, using the confusion to her advantage. She vaulted over the counter, her foot connecting solidly with Baby Bear's chest. He went down with a strangled yelp, the backpack of cash spilling across the floor.
Without taking a moment to celebrate her minor triumph, Rei turned swiftly to confront Papa Bear. He was flailing blindly in the smoke, roaring in frustration. She ducked under his wild swing, using his momentum against him. With a well-placed strike to the back of his knee, she sent him crashing to the ground.
"You mangy varmints!" Mama Bear's enraged bellow cut through the chaos. "Nobody hurts my family!"
Rei barely had time to brace herself before Mama Bear barreled through the smoke, all fur and fury. The hybrid's claws raked across Rei's arm, drawing blood. Rei hissed in pain but didn't let it slow her down.
She danced back, leading Mama Bear away from the hostages. The bear hybrid was strong, but Rei had speed and training on her side. She ducked and weaved, landing quick strikes when she could.
"Stand still, you little pest!" Mama Bear snarled, her hillbilly accent thickening with rage.
Rei didn't waste breath on a reply. She focused on wearing the larger opponent down, knowing that Mama Bear's fury would eventually leave her vulnerable.
The smoke cleared, giving Rei a better view of her surroundings. She caught glimpses of the hostages, their faces a mix of fear and awe. She couldn't afford to be distracted, not with Mama Bear still very much a threat.
Surprised by a vicious swipe, Rei stumbled backward into a table. Mama Bear pressed her advantage, lunging forward with a triumphant roar.
Suddenly, the diner's front window exploded inward in a shower of glass. A blur of motion resolved itself into Rally, her German shepherd boyfriend landing in a crouch between Rei and Mama Bear.
"Sorry I'm late to the party," Rally quipped, his tail swishing as he sized up their opponent.
Relief and affection surged through Rei, but she pushed the feelings aside. There would be time for that later. Right now, they have a job to finish.
"About time you showed up," Rei shot back, falling into a fighting stance beside him. "I was starting to think you'd gotten lost."
Mama Bear's eyes darted between them, confusion momentarily replacing her rage. "What in the sam hill-"
She didn't get to finish her thought. Rei and Rally moved in perfect sync, years of fighting together in every motion. Rally went low, sweeping Mama Bear's legs out from under her. As she stumbled, Rei leaped, driving her elbow into the hybrid's solar plexus.
Mama Bear went down hard, the fight leaving her in a whoosh of expelled air. Rei and Rally stood over her, chests heaving from exertion.
"Nice work," Rally said, flashing Rei a grin that made her heart skip despite the circumstances.
"You too," she replied, allowing herself a small smile in return.
They made quick work of restraining the three bears, using zip ties from Rei's belt. As Rally called the police, Rei turned her attention to the hostages.
"Is everyone alright?" she asked, her voice gentle but firm. "The police will be here soon. You're safe now."
A middle-aged woman stepped forward, tears in her eyes. "Thank you," she said, her voice trembling. "We thought... we didn't know if anyone was coming."
Rei nodded, uncomfortable with the naked gratitude in the woman's eyes. "We're just glad we could help," she said simply.
As the sirens wailed in the distance, Rei felt the rush of adrenaline fade away. She surveyed the destruction–overturned tables, broken glass, scorch marks on the linoleum from the smoke grenade. Another night, another battle won. But at what cost?
Rally appeared at her side, his hand finding hers and squeezing gently. "You okay?" he asked quietly.
Rei nodded, leaning into him slightly. "Yeah," she said. "I'm okay."
As the first police cars landed in the parking lot, Rei steeled herself for the questions that would follow. This was the part she hated–the aftermath, the explanations, the tightrope walk of being bounty hunters in a world that didn't always understand their methods.
But as she looked at the relieved faces of the hostages, at the subdued forms of the Three Bears Gang, she knew it was worth it. This was why she did what she did, why she risked everything night after night.
The door burst open, a flood of officers pouring in with weapons drawn. Rei raised her hands slowly, Rally doing the same beside her.
"It's okay," she called out. "The situation is under control."
As the officers lowered their weapons, a grizzled bear lieutenant stepped forward. His eyes swept over the scene, taking in the restrained hybrids and the battered bounty hunters.
"Well," he said, a hint of grudging respect in his voice, "looks like you two have been busy."
Rei allowed herself a small smile. "Just doing our part to keep the city safe, sir," she replied.
As she began recounting the events of the night, Rei couldn't help but wonder what the next crisis would bring. For the moment, she took solace because they had created an impact. Tonight, at least, the good guys had won.
