Book 3: Chapter 6

Luna, along with the tiger girl twins, frantically dug through the rubble. They flung each stone aside and clawed through the earth.

Luna was determined not to abandon her sister, vowing to dig through the debris no matter how long it took. “Hold on, Rei! Hold on!”

“Stand back!” Flake shouted, extracting a blue crystal grenade and embedding it in the rubble after activating it.

The girls retreated and observed as the barrier of debris burst open, creating a vast opening. Luna hastily scrambled through the hole as the twins followed her from behind.

On the other side, Luna's heart pounded as she watched Rei disappear into the darkness, swallowed by the amorphous mass of the creature. Time seemed to slow, each second stretching into eternity as her sister's scream echoed through the dank sewers.

"Rei!" Luna's voice cracked, raw with desperation. She lunged forward, but a firm hand gripped her arm, yanking her back.

"Are you insane?" Snow hissed, her white fur bristling. "You'll get yourself killed!"

Luna whirled on the tiger hybrid, fury blazing in her eyes. "That's my sister!"

"And we need a plan if we're going to save her," Flake interjected, her tail lashing anxiously. "That thing will tear you apart if you just charge in."

Gritting her teeth, Luna forced herself to take a deep breath. The Tiger Girls were right, as much as she hated to admit it. Panic wouldn't help Rei now.

"Fine," she growled. "What do you suggest?"

Snow's eyes narrowed, scanning the chamber. "We need a distraction. Something to draw its attention away from Rei long enough for us to grab her."

Luna's gaze landed on a pile of debris nearby–twisted metal and chunks of concrete, remnants of the sewer's crumbling infrastructure. An idea sparked in her mind.

"Cover me," she ordered, darting towards the rubble.

Flake moved to Luna's side, providing cover fire as Luna snatched up a jagged piece of rebar. The creature's oily surface rippled, tendrils lashing out at the sudden movement.

"Hey, ugly!" Luna shouted, hurling the metal bar with all her strength. It whistled through the air, embedding itself in the creature's gelatinous form with a sickening squelch.

The monster recoiled, its mass writhing as it let out an unearthly shriek. In that moment of distraction, a flash of pink caught Luna's eye–Rei's hair, barely visible as the creature's grip loosened.

"Now!" Luna yelled, sprinting forward.

Snow and Flake leapt into action, unleashing a barrage of gunfire at the creature. Luna pushed herself harder, ignoring the burn in her muscles as she closed the distance. Her hand found Rei's, fingers interlocking as she yanked her sister free.

"I've got you," Luna gasped, pulling Rei close. "We need to move!"

The twins scrambled backwards as the Tiger Girls provided covering fire. The creature's howls of rage reverberated through the chamber, sending tremors through the unstable ground beneath their feet.

"This way!" Flake shouted, gesturing towards a narrow tunnel. "It's too big to follow us through there!"

They ran, Luna half-dragging Rei as her sister stumbled, still dazed from her encounter with the monster. The sound of pursuit grew fainter as they squeezed through the cramped passage, emerging into a wider tunnel several minutes later.

Luna's legs gave out, and she sank to her knees, chest heaving as she gulped down lungfuls of the fetid air. Rei slumped against her, trembling.

"That... that was too close," Rei whispered, her voice hoarse.

"You okay?" Luna asked, giving her sister a quick once-over. Rei's torn clothes stained with a viscous black substance, but she seemed unharmed.

Rei nodded weakly. "I think so. It... it was like being trapped in tar. I couldn't breathe, couldn't move..."

"We need to keep moving," Snow cut in, her tone brusque but not unkind. "That thing could still be following us."

Luna bristled at the interruption, but swallowed her retort. The tiger hybrid was right–they weren't safe yet.

"Can you walk?" she asked Rei, who nodded again, more firmly this time.

They pressed on, winding their way through the labyrinthine sewer system. Luna's enhanced night vision picked out obstacles in the gloom, guiding them around treacherous drops and pools of noxious sludge. The stench was overwhelming, a miasma of decay and chemicals that burned her sensitive nose.

After what felt like hours, they finally emerged into the cool night air of Moreau City. Luna had never been so grateful for the acrid taste of smog.

"We should split up," Flake suggested, her ears twitching nervously as she scanned their surroundings. "Draw less attention."

Luna opened her mouth to argue, but Rei squeezed her hand. "They're right," her sister murmured. "We need to regroup, figure out our next move."

Reluctantly, Luna nodded. "Fine. We'll meet back at our suite in an hour.” She glanced at the Tiger Girls. “I’ll text you our address.”

After they exchanged numbers, the Tiger Girls melted into the shadows, Luna turned to Rei. "Think you can manage the climb?"

Rei managed a weak smile. "Race you to the top?"

They scaled the fire escape of a nearby building with practiced ease, their genetically enhanced bodies making temporary work of the ascent. On the rooftop, Luna pulled out her holo phone, punching in a familiar code.

Their hover bike approached them from the sky and landed slowly next to them. Luna helped Rei into the back seat before sliding behind the controls. The engine purred to life, barely audible as they lifted off, merging seamlessly with the city's nighttime traffic.

"Hiro's going to freak when he sees us," Rei muttered, slumping back in her seat.

Luna's grip tightened on the steering column. "Let him. We need answers, and he's the best chance we've got at figuring out what that... thing was."

The rest of the journey passed in tense silence. Luna's mind raced, replaying the nightmare in the sewers. They'd faced some tough bounties before, but nothing like this. The creature's raw power, its apparent invulnerability to their weapons... it was on a whole other level.

They touched down on the private landing pad of their penthouse suite, the bike's engine purred off as soon as they disembarked. Luna helped Rei inside, her sister's steps growing steadier as the shock wore off.

"I need a shower," Rei groaned, wrinkling her nose at the foul stench clinging to her clothes. "Maybe ten."

"Make it quick," Luna replied. "I'll call Hiro."

As Rei disappeared into the bathroom, Luna pulled up Hiro's contact on her holo phone. Their Japanese tech wizard and longtime friend answered on the second ring, his normally cheerful face creased with concern.

"Luna! Are you okay? I've been trying to reach you for hours!"

"We're fine," Luna assured him, though the tremor in her voice betrayed her. "But Hiro... we need your help. We got a new bounty, which is really trouble.”

Hiro's expression grew serious. "Tell me everything."

Luna recounted their harrowing encounter in the sewers, describing the creature in as much detail as she could. Hiro listened intently, his fingers flying over an unseen keyboard as he took notes.

"I've never heard of anything like this," he muttered, brow furrowed. "Some kind of shapeshifting biomass, impervious to conventional weapons... it doesn't make sense."

"That's why we need you," Luna pressed. "There has to be a way to stop this thing. If we don't..."

She trailed off, unable to finish the thought. The image of that writhing black mass engulfing her sister flashed through her mind, sending a chill down her spine.

Hiro nodded grimly. "I'll do everything I can. But Luna, I need more data. Without a sample to analyze, I'm flying blind here."

Luna's stomach clenched. "You mean we have to go back down there?"

"I'm afraid so," Hiro confirmed. "If we're going to have any chance of developing a weapon that can hurt this thing, I need to study its composition."

The sound of the shower shutting off caught Luna's attention. "Rei's done. We'll call you back in a few minutes, okay?"

As she ended the call, Luna sank onto the plush sofa, suddenly bone-weary. The adrenaline was wearing off, leaving her feeling hollow and drained.

Rei emerged from the bathroom a few moments later, her damp hair clinging to her neck. She'd changed into fresh clothes, but Luna could still see the faint tremor in her hands.

"What did Hiro say?" Rei asked, curling up beside her sister.

Luna filled her in on the conversation, watching Rei's face carefully. Her twin's expression hardened as Luna explained the need for a sample.

"So we have to go back," Rei said flatly.

Luna nodded. "Looks like it. But Rei, if you're not up for this..."

"Don't," Rei cut her off, steel in her voice. "We're in this together, remember? Besides, I owe that blob payback for trying to digest me."

A knock at the door interrupted them. Luna tensed, reaching for the weapon concealed beneath the coffee table, but relaxed as she recognized the familiar scents.

"It's open," she called.

Snow and Flake entered, looking as battered and grimy as Luna felt. The four of them regarded each other warily for a moment before Snow broke the silence.

"So," she said, her tail twitching. "What's the plan?"

Luna quickly brought them up to speed on Hiro needing a sample to analyze. To her surprise, the Tiger Girls didn't immediately balk at the idea of returning to the sewers.

"We've seen things like this before," Flake explained, her ears flattening. "Not on this scale, but... there are labs in the city, hidden away. They experiment with gene splicing, creating hybrids and... other things."

"Most of them don't survive," Snow added grimly. "The ones that do... well, they usually don't last long. But this..."

"This is different," Rei finished. "Bigger. More dangerous."

Flake nodded. "Which means we need to stop it before it gets worse."

Luna's holo phone chimed, Hiro's face appearing above the device. "Hi, I wasn’t sure you girls left yet," he said without preamble. "Remember, if we're going to have any chance of synthesizing an effective weapon, I need an actual sample of the creature's biomass."

"How much do you need?" Luna asked.

Hiro's brow furrowed. "Not much. A few grams should be enough for a preliminary analysis. But Luna, be careful. From what you've described, direct contact with this thing could be extremely dangerous."

"No kidding," Rei muttered, rubbing her arms as if she could still feel the creature's grip.

"We'll figure something out," Luna assured him. "Just be ready when we get back."

As the call ended, an uneasy silence fell over the room. The enormity of what they were about to attempt weighed heavily on all of them.

"We should gear up," Snow said at last, breaking the tension. "Meet back here in an hour?"

Luna nodded. "Sounds good. We'll need to come up with a plan for extracting that sample."

As the Tiger Girls left to prepare, Luna turned to Rei. Her sister's face set in a determined expression, but Luna could see the fear lurking in her eyes.

"Hey," she said softly, bumping Rei's shoulder with her own. "We've got this, okay? That thing caught us off guard before, but now we know what we're dealing with."

Rei managed a wan smile. "Yeah, you're right. Besides, can you imagine what our fans would say if they knew their favorite K-pop stars were about to take on a giant blob monster?"

Luna snorted. "They'd probably think it was some elaborate publicity stunt."

They shared a brief laugh, the moment of levity helping to ease some of the tension. But as they geared up, checking weapons and donning their high-tech suits, the gravity of the situation settled back over them.

An hour later, they reconvened in the living room. The Tiger Girls had arrived with an arsenal of their own, including some nasty-looking energy weapons Luna had never seen before.

"Experimental tech," Flake explained, noticing Luna's questioning look. "Might not kill that thing, but it should slow it down."

They gathered around the holographic display Hiro had sent, showing a detailed map of the sewer system.

"Okay," Luna began, her voice steady despite the knot of anxiety in her stomach. "Here's what we know. The creature seems to be concentrated in this area." She highlighted a section of the map. "It's big, it's fast, and conventional weapons do little against it."

"So how do we get close enough to grab a sample without becoming blob food?" Rei asked.

Snow leaned forward, studying the map intently. "We need to trap it somehow. Contain it long enough to extract what we need."

"The old power junction," Flake suggested, pointing to a spot on the map. "If we can lure it there, we might be able to use the electrical systems against it."

Luna nodded slowly, the beginnings of a plan forming in her mind. "That could work. We'd need someone to play bait, though."

"I'll do it," Rei volunteered immediately.

Luna opened her mouth to protest, but Rei cut her off. "I've already been in direct contact with that thing. If anyone has a chance of getting close enough, it's me."

As much as Luna hated to admit it, her sister had a point. She sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Fine. But you're not going in alone. Snow, can you back her up?"

The white tiger hybrid nodded sharply. "Consider it done."

"Flake and I will work on setting the trap," Luna continued. "Once we've got it contained, we'll need to move fast to get that sample."

They spent the next hour hammering out the details of their plan, going over contingencies and worst-case scenarios. As they prepared to head out, Luna pulled Rei aside.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked quietly. "No one would blame you if you wanted to sit this one out."

Rei's eyes flashed with determination. "I'm sure. We started this together, we'll finish it together."

Luna nodded, swallowing past the lump in her throat. "Okay. Just... be careful down there, alright?"

"Always am," Rei replied with a wink, some of her usual bravado returning.

As they made their final preparations, Hiro's face appeared on the holo-display one last time.

"I've been analyzing the data from your last encounter," he said, his expression grave. "There's something you should know. The creature's cellular structure... it's evolving at an unprecedented rate. Every minute it's active, it's getting stronger, more adaptable."

A chill ran down Luna's spine. "What are you saying, Hiro?"

"I'm saying be careful," he replied, his eyes filled with worry. "This thing... it might be even more dangerous now than it was before. Watch each other's backs down there."

As the call ended, Luna looked around at her companions. Determination etched on every face, but she could see the fear lurking beneath the surface. They all knew the stakes–if they failed, there was no telling how many lives this creature might claim.

"Alright," Luna said, her voice steady despite the churning in her gut. "Let's move out."

They filed out of the apartment, tension thick in the air. As they descended into the sewers once more, Luna couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking into something far beyond anything they'd faced before.

The dank tunnels seemed to close in around them, the shadows deeper and more menacing than ever. Every drip of water, every skitter of unseen vermin set Luna's nerves on edge.

She caught Rei's eye as they approached the junction where they would split up. No words were necessary–a lifetime of silent communication passed between them in that moment.

Be safe. Come back to me.

With a last nod, Rei and Snow peeled off, disappearing into the gloom. Luna watched them go, her heart clenching painfully in her chest.

"They'll be fine," Flake murmured beside her. "We've got a job to do."

Luna took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. "Right. Let's get that trap set."

As they moved deeper into the tunnels, Luna's enhanced hearing picked up the faint echo of Rei's voice, calling out a challenge to the creature lurking in the darkness. A roar answered–a sound that sent ice through Luna's veins.

It was hunting them now.
