The jackhammer's relentless pounding vibrated through Marcus Reid's body as he worked, sweat dripping down his face despite the cool autumn air. He gritted his teeth against the fatigue creeping into his muscles. Just a few more hours, he told himself. A few more hours and he could go home to his family with another day's meager pay in his pocket.
All around him, the Moreau City construction site buzzed with activity. Towering cranes swung overhead, ferrying massive steel beams to the upper levels of the half-finished skyscraper. The air rang with the cacophony of power tools and shouted instructions.
Marcus wiped the sweat from his brow, his gaze drifting upward. The gleaming spires of the city center loomed in the distance, a tantalizing glimpse of a world forever out of reach. Up there, the enhanced humans and Humanimals lived lives of comfort and privilege. Down here in the underbelly, people like Marcus scraped by on whatever work they could find.
"Reid! Back to work!"
The harsh voice of his foreman cut through Marcus' bitter musings. He ducked his head and hefted the jackhammer once more, forcing his aching arms back into motion. Can't afford to slack off, not even for a moment. Every minute of labor counted when you were struggling to put food on the table.
The next hour passed in a blur of exhaustion and mind-numbing repetition. Marcus barely registered the shouts and clangs around him as he focused on the task at hand. One more section of concrete to break up, then he could take his lunch break...
A shrill whistle pierced the air. "Heads up!"
Marcus looked up just in time to see a steel beam swinging towards him, the crane cable having snapped. Time seemed to slow as adrenaline surged through his system. He dove to the side, feeling the rush of displaced air as the beam crashed to the ground where he'd been standing moments before.
For several heartbeats, Marcus lay on the rough concrete, lungs heaving as he struggled to process what had just happened. Then hands were hauling him to his feet, voices buzzing with concern.
"You alright, Reid?"
"Damn, that was close!"
"Someone call the safety inspector!"
Marcus nodded numbly, his legs trembling as the adrenaline ebbed. "I'm okay," he managed. "Just... just need a minute."
But there was no time to catch his breath. The foreman stormed over, face purple with rage. "Reid! What the hell were you thinking? You should have been watching for incoming loads! And now look at this mess!"
Marcus stared at his boss in disbelief. "But sir, the cable-"
"I don't want to hear excuses!" the foreman snapped. "You're lucky you didn't get yourself killed with your carelessness. Now get this debris cleared up. And don't think I won't be docking your pay for the damaged equipment!"
Shame and anger burned in Marcus' chest as the foreman stomped away. It wasn't fair. None of this was fair. He'd nearly died, and all his boss cared about was the bottom line.
With leaden limbs, Marcus began gathering up the scattered chunks of concrete. His coworkers shot him sympathetic glances but kept their distance, not wanting to draw the foreman's ire.
By the time after he cleared up the mess, Marcus’ scheduled break time had already passed. His stomach growled plaintively as he trudged to a secluded corner of the site, unwrapping the meager sandwich he'd packed that morning.
"Rough day, huh?"
Marcus looked up to see two of his coworkers, Jim and Hector, settling down beside him with their own lunches. He grunted in acknowledgment, too exhausted for conversation.
Jim glanced around furtively before leaning in close. "Hey, you ever hear about those black market bio-enhancers?"
Marcus frowned. "What, like the fancy gene mods the suits uptown get?"
"Nah, man," Hector chimed in. "This is different. Way cheaper. Word is there's this new formula that can boost your strength, stamina, all that good stuff. No doctor visits or nothin' required."
Despite his weariness, Marcus felt a spark of interest. "You serious? Where're people getting this stuff?"
Jim grinned. "There's this guy, calls himself Baby Shark. Weird name, I know. But he's got connections. Runs a site on the dark web where you can place orders."
"And it actually works?" Marcus asked skeptically.
"From what I hear," Hector said with a shrug. "Buddy of mine tried it, said it was like a shot of lightning. Could work twice as long without getting tired."
Marcus' mind raced. If this enhancer really worked, it could change everything. No more struggling to keep up with the physically enhanced workers. No more risking life and limb for a pittance. He could finally give his family the life they deserved.
"How much?" he asked, trying to keep the eagerness from his voice.
Jim named a figure that made Marcus wince. It was steep - more than he made in a month. But compared to the cost of legal enhancements, it was a bargain.
"I've got some savings," Marcus mused. "Been putting aside a little each week for emergencies."
"This kind of is an emergency, isn't it?" Hector pointed out. "Way things are going, it's only a matter of time before one of us gets replaced by a Humanimal who can do the work of three men."
Marcus nodded slowly. "You're right. I can't keep going on like this. My family deserves better." He took a deep breath. "Alright, how do I get in touch with this Baby Shark guy?"
Jim pulled out his battered holo phone, fingers flying across the cracked screen. "I'll send you the link. But be careful, yeah? This ain't exactly above board."
"Thanks," Marcus said fervently. "I owe you guys one."
As they finished their hasty meal and returned to work, Marcus felt a glimmer of hope for the first time in years. Soon, he told himself. Soon things would change for the better.

The next few days passed in a haze of anticipation and nerves. Marcus pored over the mysterious website Jim had shown him, reading testimonials and product descriptions with equal parts excitement and trepidation. It all seemed too good to be true - but what other choice did he have?
Finally, screwing up his courage, Marcus placed an order. The site's encryption and anonymous payment methods made his head spin, but he fumbled his way through the process. Now all he could do was wait.
Three agonizing days later, a message appeared in his secure inbox. A time and location for the exchange. Marcus' pulse quickened. This was really happening.
The appointed night found Marcus in a dimly lit alley, hands shoved in his pockets to hide their trembling. The only sound was the distant hum of traffic and the pounding of his own heart.
A figure melted out of the shadows - a man with distinctly shark-like features. Gills fluttered at his neck, and rows of razor-sharp teeth gleamed as he smiled.
"You must be Marcus," the shark-man said, voice gravelly. "I'm Baby Shark. You got the payment?"
Marcus nodded jerkily, fumbling for his phone. "Y-yeah. Just need to transfer the crypto..."
Baby Shark's grin widened as the transaction went through. From his jacket, he produced a small vial filled with iridescent blue liquid.
"One dose of our premium bio-enhancer, as ordered," he said, holding it out. "A word of advice - start with half. This stuff packs quite a punch."
Marcus reached for the vial with trembling fingers. "It's safe, right? No side effects?"
Baby Shark shrugged. "Perfectly safe, so long as you follow the dosage instructions. Though I suppose everyone reacts a little differently. Nature of the beast with this kind of product."
Before Marcus could ask any more questions, the shark-man melted back into the shadows. "Pleasure doing business with you," his voice drifted back. Then Marcus was alone once more, clutching the precious vial.
He hurried home, heart racing with a mixture of excitement and apprehension. This was it. The moment that would change everything.
The tiny apartment was dark and quiet when Marcus slipped inside. His wife and children were already asleep, unaware of the momentous step he was about to take.
In the cramped bathroom, Marcus stared at his haggard reflection. The lines of exhaustion etched into his face, the slump of his shoulders - all of it would soon be erased. He would be strong again. A provider. A man his family could be proud of.

With shaking hands, he uncapped the vial. The sharp, chemical scent made his eyes water. Following Baby Shark's advice, he carefully measured out half the glowing liquid into a glass of water.
"Bottom's up," Marcus muttered. Before he could lose his nerve, he tossed back the concoction in one swift gulp.
For a moment, nothing happened. Then heat bloomed in his belly, spreading outward in pulsing waves. Marcus gasped, gripping the edge of the sink as his legs threatened to give way.
The heat intensified, becoming a searing agony that raced along every nerve. Marcus bit back a scream, not wanting to wake his family. Sweat poured down his face as tremors wracked his body.
Just when he thought he couldn't bear another second, the pain subsided. In its wake came a surge of vitality unlike anything he'd ever experienced. Every sense seemed sharper, more vivid. Energy thrummed through his muscles, banishing all traces of fatigue.
Marcus straightened, marveling at how light and strong his body felt. He flexed his arms, watching the play of newly defined muscles beneath his skin. A fierce grin spread across his face. It had worked. It had really worked!
Giddy with success, Marcus turned towards the bedroom. He couldn't wait to show his wife, to tell her that their struggles were finally over-
A spasm of pain doubled him over. Marcus clutched at his stomach, a sick feeling of dread rising. Something was wrong. This wasn't supposed to happen.
He stumbled back to the mirror, eyes widening in horror at what he saw. His skin was... melting. Flowing like wax, losing all definition. And it was spreading, consuming more of his body with each passing second.
"No," Marcus whimpered. "No, no, no!"
He clawed desperately at his liquefying flesh, but his fingers sank in without resistance. Panic overwhelmed him as he felt his very self beginning to dissolve.
With the last vestiges of rational thought, Marcus lurched towards the door. He had to get away, had to protect his family from whatever he was becoming. But his legs gave way beneath him, and he collapsed to the floor in a writhing heap.
The bathroom door creaked open. "Marcus?" his wife's sleepy voice called. "Is everything okay?"
Marcus tried to warn her, to tell her to run. But all that emerged was an inhuman gurgle.
His wife's scream pierced the air as she took in the horrific sight before her. The terrified cries of their children quickly joined in, awakened by the commotion.
Those beloved voices were the last thing Marcus heard as his consciousness slipped away. His humanity, his very identity, subsumed by ravenous instinct and unquenchable hunger.
Where Marcus Reid had stood, only a monstrous mass of living darkness remained. With a bestial roar, it surged forward, consumed by the need to feed.
The screams cut off abruptly, leaving only the wet sounds of tearing flesh and splintering bone.
In the silent aftermath, the creature that had once been Marcus Reid oozed out into the night, driven by instincts it didn't understand. And deep in the shadows of Moreau City, Baby Shark smiled, pleased that another of his experimental formulas had yielded such promising results.

One Year Later.
The thunderous roar of the crowd washed over Rei like a tidal wave as she and Luna took their final bows. Sweat glistened on her skin, her chest heaving from the exertion of their performance. As the stage lights dimmed, Rei caught Luna's eye, and they shared a triumphant grin. Another sold-out show at Moreau City's largest arena.
Rei's cat ears twitched, picking up the continued screams and chants of "Kat-X! Kat-X!" even as they hurried off stage. The adrenaline was still coursing through her veins, her enhanced feline senses hyper-aware of every sight, sound and smell.
"That was insane!" Luna exclaimed as they rushed down the corridor towards their dressing room. Her blue hair clung to her forehead, damp with sweat, as her eyes sparkled with unbridled excitement."Did you see how the crowd went crazy during the dance break?"
Rei nodded, her own pink hair a disheveled mess. "I thought the place was going to explode when we hit that high note in the bridge."
They burst into their dressing room, immediately mobbed by their team of stylists and assistants. Rei endured the flurry of hands removing her intricate stage costume and wiping away her stage makeup. All the while, her mind was already racing ahead to what came next.
Once Rei and Luna had changed into more comfortable attire, they dismissed their team. The door had barely clicked shut before Rei was digging in her bag for her holo phone.
"Any new bounties?" Luna asked eagerly, peering over Rei's shoulder.
Rei's fingers danced across the holographic interface, scanning through alerts and notifications. Her eyes widened as a new bounty notice popped up.
"Looks like we've got a live one," she said, angling the screen so Luna could see. "Spike Head. Wanted for multiple murders. Price is 50,000 cryptos."
Luna let out a low whistle. "Not bad. What's his deal?"
Rei pulled up the full profile, skimming through the details. "Says here he's got some kind of genetic modification that lets him shoot razor-sharp spikes from his head. Uses them as projectile weapons."
"Sounds dangerous," Luna mused. "But nothing we can't handle."
Rei nodded, already plotting out potential strategies in her head. This was the part of their double life that got her blood pumping even more than performing on stage. The thrill of the hunt, outsmarting dangerous criminals, pushing their enhanced abilities to the limit.
"We should move fast," Rei said, shutting off her holo phone. "Before someone else snatches this bounty."
Luna was already pulling on her sleek black combat suit. "Race you to the air bike?"
Rei grinned, slipping into her own form-fitting suit. "You're on."
They snuck out through a back entrance, avoiding the crowds of fans still lingering outside the arena. In a dark alley behind the building, cleverly concealed under a holographic dumpster, waited their pride and joy - a state-of-the-art hover-bike custom built by their tech guru Hiro.
Rei swung her leg over the bike, feeling the familiar thrum of the anti-grav engine beneath her. Luna slid on behind her, wrapping her arms around Rei's waist.
"Where to first?" Luna asked as Rei fired up the bike.
Rei pulled up a holographic map of the city on the bike's console. "Spike Head was last spotted in the Neon District. We'll start there and see if we can pick up his trail."
With a twist of the throttle, they shot out of the alley and up into the glittering urban canyons of Moreau City. Rei expertly wove between lanes of hover-traffic, pushing the bike to its limits. The wind whipped through her hair, carrying the scents of the city - a heady mix of ozone, synthetic foods, and a thousand intermingling perfumes and colognes.
As they neared the Neon District, Rei slowed their breakneck pace. This area was a maze of narrow alleys and winding streets, packed with bars, nightclubs, and less savory establishments. Holographic advertisements plastered every available surface, bathing the streets in a kaleidoscope of shifting colors.
Rei brought the bike to a stop in a shadowy alcove and killed the engine. She and Luna dismounted, immediately on high alert as they scanned their surroundings.
"Remember, this guy's dangerous," Rei cautioned. "Don't take any unnecessary risks."
Luna rolled her eyes. "Yes, mom. I know how to do my job."
They split up, moving through the crowded streets with practiced ease. To the casual observer, they looked like any other young party-goers out for a night on the town. But Rei's enhanced senses were working overtime, cataloging every face, every scent, searching for any trace of their quarry.
An hour of fruitless searching later, Rei was getting frustrated. She tapped her earpiece, opening a secure channel to Luna.
"Anything?" she asked.
"Negative," Luna replied. "No sign of Spike Head or any recent spike damage. You?"
Rei sighed. "Same here. Maybe we should-"
A woman's terrified scream cut through the din of the crowd. Rei's head snapped towards the sound, her ears swiveling to pinpoint its source.
"Did you hear that?" she asked Luna urgently.
"On it," Luna confirmed. "Coming from the east, about two blocks from your position."
Rei was already moving, weaving through the press of bodies with inhuman grace. She vaulted over an aerial car stuck in traffic, ignoring the angry honks from its driver. As she neared the source of the scream, the crowd thinned out, people fleeing in the opposite direction.
She rounded a corner into a narrow alley and skidded to a stop. A woman cowered against the wall, terror etched on her face. Looming over her was a hulking figure - easily seven feet tall, with a misshapen head covered in bony protrusions.
Spike Head.
The criminal's attention snapped to Rei as she entered the alley. With a snarl, he whipped his head towards her. There was a sickening crunching sound as several of the spikes detached, hurtling through the air straight at Rei's face.
Rei's enhanced reflexes kicked in. She dropped and rolled, feeling the wind of the spikes' passage as they whizzed over her head. They embedded themselves in the wall behind her with meaty thunks.
"Run!" Rei shouted at the terrified woman as she sprang back to her feet. The woman didn't need to be told twice, bolting past Rei and out of the alley.
Spike Head roared in frustration, more spikes already sprouting to replace the ones he'd fired. Rei settled into a fighting stance, her eyes never leaving her opponent.
"Spike Head," she called out. "You're wanted for multiple counts of murder. Come quietly and I promise you'll get a fair trial."
The criminal's only response was a guttural laugh. "Little girl thinks she can take me down? I'll turn you into a pincushion!"
He whipped his head again, sending another volley of spikes hurtling towards Rei. This time she was ready. She sprang straight up, her powerful legs propelling her a good fifteen feet into the air. At the apex of her jump, she pushed off the alley wall, flipping over Spike Head's massive form to land behind him.
Before he could turn, Rei lashed out with a devastating kick to the back of his knee. Spike Head howled in pain as his leg buckled. He swung a meaty fist at Rei, but she easily ducked under it, using his own momentum to flip him onto his back.
Rei pounced, aiming to pin him down, but Spike Head was faster than he looked. He rolled away, regaining his feet with surprising agility. They faced off again, circling each other warily.
"Luna, where are you?" Rei hissed into her comm. "Could use some backup here."
"Two minutes out," Luna replied, slightly out of breath. "Had to take the long way around a police blockade."
Rei gritted her teeth. Two minutes might as well be an eternity in a fight like this. She'd have to keep Spike Head occupied until Luna arrived.
"You're pretty spry for a big guy," Rei taunted, hoping to keep him talking. "What's your secret? Pilates? Yoga?"
Spike Head snarled. "You think this is funny? I'll show you funny!"
He charged at her like a bull, head lowered to impale her on his spikes. Rei waited until the last possible second before leaping straight up, pushing off his back as he barreled past. The momentum sent Spike Head crashing into a dumpster with a thunderous clang.
Rei landed in a crouch, already tensed for his next move. But Spike Head was slow to get up this time, clearly dazed from the impact.
"Now would be a great time, sis," Rei muttered into her comm.
As if on cue, Luna's voice rang out from the mouth of the alley. "Hey ugly! Why don't you pick on someone your own size?"
Spike Head's head snapped up at the new threat. With a roar of rage, he launched a barrage of spikes at Luna. But she was ready, activating the personal force field Hiro had built into their suits. The spikes bounced harmlessly off the shimmering energy barrier.
As Spike Head’s attention wavered, Rei seized the opportunity to act.She sprang onto his back, wrapping her arms around his thick neck in a chokehold. Spike Head thrashed wildly, trying to dislodge her, but Rei held on with grim determination.
"A little help here!" she shouted to Luna.
Her sister was there in an instant, delivering a series of rapid-fire punches to Spike Head's solar plexus. The criminal wheezed, the fight going out of him as the air was driven from his lungs.
Finally, his knees buckled, and he crashed to the ground. Rei maintained her chokehold until she felt him go limp beneath her. Only then did she release her grip, rolling off his unconscious form.
"Nice work," Luna said, offering Rei a hand up. "Though I think I softened him up for you."
Rei snorted as she got to her feet. "In your dreams. I had him on the ropes before you even showed up."
They shared a grin, the thrill of a successful capture humming through their veins. Rei pulled out her holo phone, already composing a message to Fiona to come collect their latest catch.
"Not a bad haul for a night's work," Luna mused as they secured Spike Head with high-tensile restraints. "Though I was hoping for more of a challenge."
Rei was about to reply when a notification popped up on her holo phone. She frowned as she read it, a knot forming in her stomach.
"What's wrong?" Luna asked, noticing her expression.
Rei wordlessly held out the phone so Luna could see. It was an update on the bounty for Spike Head - now listed as "CLAIMED" in bold red letters.
"But... that's impossible," Luna sputtered. "We just took him down!"
Rei's mind raced, trying to make sense of it. Then she noticed a detail she'd missed before - the timestamp on the claim. It was from nearly an hour ago, well before they'd even arrived in the Neon District.
"Someone beat us to it," Rei said grimly. "This isn't our Spike Head."
As if to confirm her words, the unconscious criminal at their feet began to shimmer and distort. His hulking form melted away, revealing a much smaller, ordinary-looking man.
"A holographic disguise," Luna breathed. "But who..."
The answer came as another notification on Rei's phone. A video message, sender unknown. With a sense of trepidation, Rei opened it.
Two faces filled the screen - strikingly beautiful women with white long white hair, black stripes, pointed ears, and piercing blue eyes. Tiger hybrids, if Rei had to guess. They wore matching grins of smug satisfaction.
"Hello, Kat-X," one of them purred. "Allow us to introduce ourselves. I'm Snow, and this is my sister Flake. We're the Tiger Girls, and we just wanted to thank you for the assist."
The other hybrid - Flake - chimed in. "While you two were chasing our decoy, we were collecting the real Spike Head. Along with that juicy bounty."
"Better luck next time," Snow added with a wink. "If you can keep up, that is."
The message ended, leaving Rei and Luna staring at each other in stunned silence. They'd been played, expertly and thoroughly.
"Who the heck are these Tiger Girls?" Luna finally asked, her voice tight with anger.
Rei shook her head, still processing what had just happened. "I don't know. But I have a feeling we're going to find out."
As if to punctuate her words, both their phones pinged with a new alert. Another bounty, even bigger than the last. Rei and Luna locked eyes, a silent agreement passing between them.
The game was on. And this time, they wouldn't be caught flat-footed.
As they made their way back to their air bike, Rei's mind was already plotting their next move. The Tiger Girls might have won this round, but the night was still young. And Rei wasn't about to let a pair of upstart hybrids muscle in on their territory.
The hunt was just beginning.
