Luna's heart pounded as she crept through the dank sewer tunnels, her boots splashing softly in the murky water. The stench of decay and waste assaulted her nostrils, but she forced herself to breathe through it. Ahead, Rei's pink hair glowed faintly in the dim light of their headlamps, a beacon in the oppressive darkness.
"Everyone clear on the plan?" Rei whispered, her voice barely audible over the constant drip of water.
Luna nodded, then remembered her sister couldn't see her. "Crystal," she murmured back.
Snow's cool voice cut through the darkness. "Let's hope your tech guy knows what he's talking about."
"Hiro's never let us down before," Luna shot back, bristling at the white tiger's tone.
Flake's tail swished audibly as she brought up the rear. "First time for everything," she muttered.
Luna bit back a retort. They needed to work together if they had any hope of surviving this mess. The memory of their last encounter with the creature sent a shiver down her spine. Its amorphous black form, writhing and pulsing as it absorbed everything in its path... Luna shook her head, forcing the image away.
They rounded a corner, and Luna's breath caught in her throat. There it was – the massive chamber where they'd first encountered the monster. Bones and debris littered the floor, silent testament to the creature's appetite.
"Positions," Rei hissed, and they scattered.
Luna pressed herself against the slimy wall, her fingers tightening around the specialized containment device Hiro had cobbled together. One sample. That's all they needed. One sample, and they could get the hell out of here.
Minutes ticked by, each second stretching into an eternity. Luna's muscles screamed from the tension of holding still. A bead of sweat trickled down her temple.
Then she heard it – a wet, slithering sound that made her fur stand on end.
It was coming.
The creature oozed into view, its massive bulk filling the chamber. Luna's eyes widened. Had it grown even larger since their last encounter? Its surface rippled and churned, pseudopods lashing out to explore its surroundings.
Rei's voice crackled through Luna's earpiece. "Now!"
Luna sprang into action, sprinting towards the pre-arranged position. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Snow and Flake doing the same, herding the creature towards the center of the room.
"Come on, you big pile of poo," Luna muttered, readying the containment device.
The plan was simple in theory – corral the creature, distract it, and snag a sample while it was occupied. But as Luna watched the monstrosity twist and writhe, avoiding their carefully laid traps with unnatural intelligence, her stomach sank.
This wasn't going to work.
A scream pierced the air, and Luna's head snapped around. Flake was down, a tendril of black goo wrapped around her leg. Snow snarled, slashing at the creature with razor-sharp claws, but it was like fighting an oil slick.
"Oh no!" Luna sprinted towards them, containment device forgotten. She skidded to a halt beside Snow, who was desperately trying to free her sister.
"Get back!" Luna yelled, pulling out her blaster. She fired a concentrated burst at the creature's appendage, wincing as Flake howled in pain.
Stolen content warning: this tale belongs on Royal Road. Report any occurrences elsewhere.
The tendril recoiled, and Flake scrambled away, her white fur stained black. Snow grabbed her, hauling her to relative safety.
"The plan's shot," Snow growled, supporting her limping sister. "We need to get out of here!"
Luna opened her mouth to argue, but a ear-splitting shriek cut her off. The creature reared up, its mass swelling ominously. Cracks spiderwebbed across the chamber's ceiling as the monster grew, defying all laws of physics.
"Luna!" Rei's panicked voice cut through the chaos. "We have to go! Now!"
But Luna hesitated, her eyes locked on the containment device lying just a few feet from the writhing mass. They couldn't leave empty-handed. Not after everything they'd been through.
"Luna, don't you dare–" Rei's warning came too late.
Luna launched herself forward, snatching up the device and lunging towards the creature. Its surface roiled, pseudopods whipping through the air like angry tentacles. Luna dodged and weaved, her dancer's grace serving her well as she evaded the monster's grasp.
Just a little closer...
She thrust the containment device into the creature's bulk, feeling it suction onto the viscous surface. For a moment, triumph surged through her veins.
Then pain exploded across her abdomen as a tendril slammed into her, sending her flying. Luna crashed into the wall, stars exploding behind her eyes. She slumped to the ground, gasping for breath.
"Luna!" Rei's scream seemed to come from far away.
Through blurry vision, Luna saw her sister racing towards her, heedless of the danger. The creature loomed behind Rei, a massive pseudopod rearing back to strike.
"Look out!" Luna croaked, but it was too late.
The blow caught Rei square in the back, sending her tumbling across the chamber floor. She lay still, pink hair matted with black goo.
"No!" Luna struggled to her feet, ignoring the stabbing pain in her ribs. She staggered towards her sister, panic clawing at her throat.
Snow appeared at her side, supporting her. "We've got to move," the tiger-girl growled. "This whole place is coming down!"
Luna wanted to argue, to fight, to do something–but her body betrayed her. Her vision swam, and she sagged against Snow's muscular frame.
"Flake, grab pinky," Snow barked. "I've got blue."
Luna felt herself being lifted, carried away from the collapsing chamber. Chunks of concrete rained down around them as they ran, the creature's furious roars echoing off the walls.
They burst out of the sewers into the neon-lit night of Moreau City, gasping for fresh air. Luna's legs gave out, and she collapsed onto the grimy pavement.
"Rei," she mumbled, fighting to stay conscious. "Where's Rei?"
"Right here," Flake grunted, laying the pink-haired girl down beside her sister. "She's breathing, but she's out cold."
Luna reached for Rei's hand, relief washing over her as she felt her sister's pulse, faint but steady. They'd made it. They were alive.
But as the adrenaline faded, a horrifying realization dawned on her.
"The sample," she gasped, patting her pockets frantically. "Where's the containment device?"
Snow and Flake exchanged grim looks.
"You dropped it," Snow said quietly. "When the creature hit you. There wasn't time to–"
"No," Luna moaned, squeezing her eyes shut. All of that, for nothing. They'd barely escaped with their lives, and they had nothing to show for it.
A low rumble echoed from the sewer entrance, and Luna's blood ran cold. It couldn't be. There was no way it could have followed them...
But as she watched in horror, a thick tendril of black goo oozed out of the manhole, questing blindly in the night air.
"Run," Luna whispered, struggling to her feet. "We have to run!"
Snow scooped up the still-unconscious Rei while Flake supported Luna. They stumbled down the empty street, the sound of pursuit growing louder behind them.
Luna's legs burned, every breath sending shards of pain through her battered ribs. She risked a glance over her shoulder and immediately wished she hadn't.
The creature had squeezed its bulk through the manhole, reforming into a nightmarish shape that defied description. It flowed over the pavement like a tide of living tar, pseudopods lashing out to grab anything in its path.
And it was gaining on them.
"There!" Flake shouted, pointing to an alley up ahead. "We can lose it in the side streets!"
They veered towards the narrow passage, hope flickering in Luna's chest. Just a little further...
A scream tore from her throat as something wrapped around her ankle, yanking her off her feet. Luna hit the ground hard, the impact driving the air from her lungs. She clawed desperately at the pavement as the tendril dragged her back towards the creature's gaping maw.
"Luna!" Snow yelled, torn between helping her and protecting the unconscious Rei.
"Go!" Luna shouted, kicking frantically at the appendage. "Get Rei out of here!"
But even as she said it, Luna knew it was hopeless. The creature's grip was implacable, drawing her closer with each passing second. She could feel the heat of its massive body, smell the acrid stench of its unnatural flesh.
This was it. This was how she died–alone in a filthy alley, devoured by a monster straight out of a nightmare.
Luna squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the end.
"Luna!"
Rei's scream echoed through the alley, raw and desperate. Luna's eyes snapped open to see her sister struggling in Snow's arms, reaching out with trembling hands.
"Rei, no!" Luna yelled. "Run! Save yourself!"
But Rei's face was a mask of determination, blue eyes blazing with a fire Luna had never seen before. With a burst of strength, Rei broke free of Snow's grasp and sprinted towards her sister.
Time seemed to slow as Luna watched her twin race towards certain death. She wanted to scream, to beg Rei to turn back–but the words died in her throat.
The last thing Luna saw was Rei's outstretched hand, fingers straining to bridge the impossible gap between them.
Then the creature's bulk loomed over her, and everything went black.
