“Alright Blaze. This seems like a good place. Also, good job. You managed to follow me on foot.” I said to Blaze as we reached an area inside the forest between Pallet and Viridian that was full of rocks and had a small river nearby.
“Char!” He happily said to me.
“First thing, you need to eat. Take a small bite of each one and tell me which one you liked more.” I said as I sat down on the ground and put five berries in front of him. He ate all of them whole, even if he didn’t like the taste of two by the looks of it.
“I guess it is my fault for not showing what you had to do. You just hatched after all.” I said as I put more of the same berries in front of him to see which one he would take. He looked at them for a moment and took a Pecha Berry.
“Want another?”
“Char!” He confirmed.
“Well, we will happily get along it seems.” I also liked sweet stuff a lot. He ate two more before he was full. I had pokemon food but I Oak told me that giving berries to young pokemon was actually healthier for them, at least for a few weeks. Then I could give normal food, be it pokemon food or meat and vegetables. Not that I would be able to feed charmander much of normal food for long. Pokemon needed way more food than people and pokemon food was concentrated food. Humans could eat it too but not too much and not frequently as it didn’t really satiate hunger for us.
After letting him digest the food a little I also gave him a little bit of water. Most fire pokemon didn’t actually need to drink much of anything but it wasn’t bad for him to drink some water from time to time.
“Alright partner. Time to start. Do you see that big rock? I want you to use Flamethrower there once.” I said to Blaze while pointing to the biggest rock we had nearby. His fire wouldn’t do anything to it so I could check his power.
Don’t know how things work exactly but going by my game knowledge, Blaze has a Serious nature, so no bonuses or penalties in his stats. My strange power confirms it.
My pokedex shows me the moves Blaze knows so far. Flamethrower, Dragonbreath, Scratch and Growl. So, two egg moves, not bad. Dragonbreath will also make it easier for him to learn Dragon Pulse in the future. Pokemon can just train moves so I don’t have to go around looking for TMs and as far as I managed to find, if it makes sense for a pokemon to be able to use a move or there is at least a small possibility, a pokemon can probably train. Results may vary.
For example, there is a confirmed case of a vaporeon learning transform. He can’t maintain it for long and it drains his energy very fast but he can do it.
Blaze gets up and focuses on the rock. After breathing in a little he shoots a stream of fire from his mouth into the rock for a few seconds before stopping. The rock is a little burned but that's about it. Not as powerful as one would imagine but I can’t really expect much from a pokemon that hatched not long ago. It’s a miracle that he is already this active in the first place.
“Alright, now use Dragonbreath on that same rock.”
Blaze focused once again and shot a stream of purple fire a little smaller than the one from before. This time it doesn’t do anything visible to the rock.
“Good. good. See that tree? Run there, use Scratch on it and run back to me.” I say moving my hands, showing how to scratch the tree.
He quickly dashes toward the tree, chips it a little with his claws and runs back to me happily. I give him a few pats on the head.
“One last thing. use Growl on me. Show me that you are strong.”
“CHAR!” Blaze growls at me. Can’t say I really felt that but it was loud enough to maybe stop another pokemon for a moment.
“We are going to need to work on that last one. Your dad is normally scarier than that.”

“Char!” He said to me. I think he somewhat understood what I meant.
“Ok, I am going to make our camp, you keep going to that tree, Scratch it for a while, return and Growl at me. Understood?”
“Char!” He said after looking at me for a few moments. He then began to do what I said.
For around 30 minutes I went around putting my tent safely on the ground, and getting the equipment to make food ready. I also took a look at the pokedex to see what I could find about recently hatched charmanders. The pokedex really was an encyclopedia about pokemon so I didn’t have to make do with a few lines of text.
As it turns out, when charmanders are born, they are bundles of energy. They are actually somewhat mature way before they hatch and spend the last month or two inside there accumulating energy. Truly wild charmanders have to fight from the moment they are born so they have to be ready the moment they leave. There is also a very big warning about stealing eggs from a nest, especially from Charizards. In those cases, every single one in the vicinity will hunt you down, even if they didn’t like each other very much.
“Alright buddy. Looks like you are done with it.” I say as I check him. PP is a thing but not in the same way as the games. It’s more like stamina but pokemon have different bars for different moves. In this case Blaze just doesn’t have more normal energy to use moves. Physically, he still has a lot of actual energy to move around and do stuff.
“Ok, back to the big rock. Use Flamethrower as much as you can for as long as you can until you can’t anymore.”
“Char!” He says as he moves to the rock. I also began to train a little. I take off my jacket and begin to run around.
“Char?” He stops and asks me when he sees me running.
“I also need to train. Are you finished already?” He obviously wasn’t and soon returned to trying to melt the stone.
Once he was done with that I made him do the same with Dragonbreath. Once he finished that he still had energy to train his body with me. Signs that he had to stop only appeared a little after the run we did after we ate lunch.I let him take a nap on my lap as I watched the world around me.
As I took in the world around me, a few tears began to drop down my face. I was so happy I wanted to cry but I held back a little. I didn’t really have time to process everything that happened so now I am doing it.
Why am I in this world? I don’t know. Have to find out. What attacked that ship? No idea. Probably going to steer away from the ocean until I have really fast flying or surfing pokemon. How did I survive? Everyone said I was just lucky. I am 99% inclined to agree but on the off chance I wasn’t just lucky, I need to understand why. Also, I am still a kid. Even if I was an adult before, all it helped was make me a more responsible kid here. I can’t remember the details but adults here have way more responsibilities than one would imagine. Pokemons make everyone be more aware of what is happening around them.
A while later Blaze woke up, full of energy and ready to train more. It took around 2 weeks before he was at an acceptable level. I can’t quantify his level and level up moves only help so much with a bred pokemon. Pokemon Moves have a somewhat linear progression. Since Blaze knew Flamethrower he should technically be able to use Amber and Flame Burst at least. Moves that he actually learned when he failed to use Flamethrower at full power a couple of times. He also learned Dragon Rage in the same vein but with Dragonbreath.
If I had to put a level on him, it would be around 6 or 7. We didn’t battle many pokemon, around 10 at most. And by we I mean we. Some wild pokemon don’t really care who they are fighting.
With as much training as we could get there, I finally decided to go to Viridian. Blaze also burned all the newborn energy he had and chose to stay in his pokeball when I was traveling. Turns out that the pokeballs now have three modes. Stasis, Semi-Stasis and Window. The first one pretty much freezes a pokemon in time. It’s like they hibernate while in there. Shouldn’t be used unless a pokemon is really hurt or isn’t going to be used for a long while and you can’t feed it as much as it would normally need. The second one is a weaker version of the first. It is to help pokemon heal by themselves from injuries that don't necessarily need a pokecenter visit. The last one just compresses them there. They can fully see what is happening outside and if a trainer allows, he can allow the pokemon to free himself. I did that.
By the time we reached Viridian it was already the 24th. My anniversary was just a day away. I decided to fully stock up on items while in the city. I had a good amount I managed to buy online but I know that I will probably stay most of my time away from cities.
After spending half a fortune in berries and medicine I went to the pokecenter. Not my first time seeing a Nurse Joy but once again the conspiracy theories were proven wrong. They are just people who put on a ‘costume’ if you would. I asked why they do that and she answered that it was mostly to give a sense of familiarity to everyone. If there is always a Joy available, even if it’s one you know, you will feel more at ease. Couldn’t argue against that.
After Blaze received his check up, he was in perfect health. I contacted Oak and Daisy, told them what I did for the last two weeks and what I was planning to do. I have a team in mind and I can find 3 of them around Viridian. As much as I believe that Blaze will be a powerhouse, this isn’t a game, I need more pokemon.
