Arc 2 chapter 6: Nightmares

“I haven’t seen you in school much, are you in a different class?” An zining asked Zhang Fei who walking besides her on the side walk. It seemed that she had already forgotten that he had gave her a confession and was rejected by her, but it wasn’t suprising since to people like her people like him were basically invisible, or more accurately the body’s original soul.

“Yes.” Zhang fei came with a simple one word reply, it seemed he didn’t seem as enthusiastic as most people who talked to her, normally everyone would give their 120% attention to her. She was a little peeved at this.

After coming back to their hotel, Zhang Fei had decided to go for a walk and relax himself since he wouldn’t be having such a calm for the next few hours and wouldn’t leave him a chance for relaxation. One the way he had bumped into An zining who had come out to grab a snack for her group who were going to hang out later. Zhang Fei decided to accompany the female lead, since it was better to lessen the gap as much as possible between them.

“But even still, I should have at least seen someone like you around the school.” An zining thought that that Zhang Fei had a really interesting personality so it was really weird that she didn’t notice someone as interesting as him before.

“ Well ‘someone’ like me is like an old book with a dusty and torn cover sitting on the shelf next to a book with a brand new leather cover, which one are you going to notice?” What Zhang Fei said was true, the original body was really average in everything, looks, personality, academics etc. Such people tend to blend into the environment and often tended to be invisible.

An zining Laughed, “Oh my, you don’t need to be so harsh on yourself.”

Zhang Fei smirked, “I am not, I am just being realistic, and besides a girl like you already has a lot on your mind to notice someone like me.”

An zining gave a half smile, “A girl like me? Hmm, it seems like you know a lot of girls like me. Then you must know a lot about me too I guess huh.” An zining joked but didn’t expect a reply from Zhang Fei.

“Yes , I do. You are the center of attention everywhere and every man throws themselves at your feet, furthermore you excel at everything in academics, making relations and whatnot. You have never found anything difficult in your life or even if it was you challenged it without backing down. You have great friends and you believe that your friends are everything and with them you can overcome any obstacle. You think you are very lucky too as there have been many instances where you got out of a sticky situation based on your luck, and last but not the least you are from a real prominent family.” Zhang Fei gave An zining a basic description of most protagonist in stories, although some had a few differences they were mostly the same. Good luck, good looks, good talent, the usual shit. An zining wasn’t any different, she was the also like the other main protagonists and had many qualities that were similar.

An zining stopped walking and looked at Zhang Fei with wide eyes that expressed her surprise. She immediately took out her phone, “Hello police? Yes, I think I am being stalked, yes he is still following me”

“Nice try, the phone is upside down.” Zhang Fei smiled and continued walking forward.

Coco looked at the female lead with an weird expression. Off all the things you could have called the police on him, you call them on him for being a stalker? Seriously!?

An zining gave out a cough to hide her embarrassment from failing to tease Zhang Fei. The night before the opening ceremony, it had rained a lot so there were still puddles on the sides of the road. Zhang Fei and An zining were walking on the side and continued chatting when suddenly a car came speeding by and passed by them. The car went over the puddle and splashed water to the side where the both of them were. An zining Closed her eyes waiting for the water to fall on her but she waited and nothing happened. When she opened her eyes she saw that she was perfectly fine and Zhang Fei was totally drenched. “Thanks for blocking the water.” An zining gave a sweet smile and thought that Zhang Fei had blocked the water from reaching her.

“Sure thing, no problem.” Zhang Fei said with a stiff smile. Saving An zining from the water splash wasn’t his intention at all. The only reason only he was drenched and An zining wasn’t was most likely due to his tremendous bad luck and her tremendous good luck, wait she didn’t have good luck anymore, it was most likely only his bad luck that played the part. Suddenly he became a little envious of the female lead who was devoid of luck.

[pfftt haha host, she thinks you are a gentleman, haha I haven’t heard such a good joke in years…] Coco laughed while Zhang Fei had a darkened expression. An zining took her napkin and went forward to dry Zhang Feis face. Zhang Fei put his hand forward, “No need, I brought my own.” Zhang Fei took out his napkin and wiped his face. An zining pouted and gave him a cute glare. I was being considerate, you jerk.

There were a lot of people in the street going here and there but suddenly everyone stopped and look upward towards the sky. The sky had just been clear moments ago had suddenly become full with dark clouds and were swirling around a specific point. Everyone watched the phenomenon with rapt attention and then suddenly from the center of the island a red beam of light shot towards the center of the swirling clouds and made everything in the sky blood red. Everyone exclaimed in surprise and wondered if it was just an attraction gimmick by the island authorities.

The clouds stayed red for a moment before they went normal. Just when everything was starting to return to normal a scream sounded out, everyone turned and looked at the source of the scream. There at the side of the path was a humanoid creature who seemed to be suffering from severe nutrient defieciency and was almost 2 meters tall and had a disproportionate body. It had no body hair and had a disfigured face with a whole row of sharp teeth. It had long and sharp claws that were blackened indicating that they were definitely poisoned. The monster gave a screech as it held the man in its hands and torn him to pieces as the man screamed in agony and died. The monster gave a terrifying grin that showed a row full of razor sharp teeths and then started eating the man. The crowd watched with a horrified expression.

[Damn, that’s one ugly looking creature.] Coco bleched when he saw the creature. Zhang Fei face fell when he saw the monster. All of its characteristics pointed to only one thing, the creature was a wendigo, a monster that ate human flesh and had inhuman strength and speed. They were originally humans but became monsters through eating human meat and then becoming cursed, but that wasn’t why Zhang Fei felt uneasy, since the monster was here it meant the sacrifice started a whole two hours before the time it was supposed to begin, he still had things to complete in the last hour for a smooth journey but it all went down the drain.

The crowd screamed and people started running away but besides those screams, there were more screams of other victims of the wendigo. Other creatures also started to manifest, there was a huge worm like creature that came out of the ground and swallowed a woman whole after opening its mouth. A huge spider was spewing webs to make a nest and was making cocoons out of the people it had captured by wrapping its web around them. Off at a distance a man could be seen entagled by vines that had shot out from the ground and was draining him from the inside and was talking his blood, organs, tissues everything inside the man. The man was becoming skinnier and skinnier until he became a hollow piece of flesh.

The casualties grew as different monsters started appearing. There were bloodied bodies everywhere and there were sounds of creams and despair. Zhang Fei looked at An zining who seemed to have become pale seeing the slaughter first hand. Zhang Fei took her hand, “Come on we need to get out of here.” An zining who was looking at the grining wendigo with dread came back to her senses when Zhang Fei took her hand. “What is-what is all this” She said with a shaken voice. “I will explain later, come on we have to get out of here unless you don’t want to become their dinner.” Zhang Fei said as a werewolf jumped onto a car that was racing away and tore its roof with its immense strength and ripped the head off of the driver as the car crashed into a jewelry store. An zining noded and held Zhang Fei hands tightly as they started running away. Zhang Fei was in a good position since there were a lot of prey for the many monsters that were appearing and had almost made it to the hotel. He planned to get the other lead and venture off deeper into the island, right now the town like areas would be the target of most monsters, so it would be best to get away.

But unluckily for Zhang Fei 3 large sized lizards that looked like giant alligators blocked their way. The lizards looked at Zhang Fei and an zining with bloodthirsty eyes and were planning to have a feast. Fuck. Zhang fei cursed at his bad luck. Zhang Fei looked at An zining seeing how she was looking at them with panicked eyes. The girl was currently useless since she was still in shock from the sudden deaths so despite her skills she would currently be useless as she was in confused state of mind. Even in the original story the writer made an zining mentally suppressed by the killings she saw for a while for character development before she stopped running away and started fighting back. Zhang Fei conjured a bag and threw it towards an Zining. An znining caught and felt that it was quite heavy.

“Take this and run away. Don’t stay in the hotel and go further into the jungle. Don’t trust anyone else and most importantly don’t be a hero. I will distract these monsters while you run away.”

An zining became flustered and denied Zhang Fei, “No I won’t go, we will go together.” Zhang Fei rolled his eyes at the cliché situation in which the damsel in distress refuses to leave the one sacrificing himself for her, that he was unfortunately now a part of while Coco snickered at the situation.

“Go! You currently useless and a burden so run-” Before Zhang fei could say anything more the lizard at the front came forward and opened his jaws to attack Zhang Fei. Zhang Fei hurriedly stepped away and soon as he did, the jaws of the monster closed while making a loud sound. It was evident that anyone caught in the jaws would be left with broken bones and become minced meat. Zhang Fei immediately took out his katana that was purely black and slashed out at the Alligator like lizard. The sword bounced off of the monster skin without making a mark. Zhang Fei clicked his tongue in annoyance.

An zining saw how Zhang Fei had started fighting and realized that her mental state was currently a mess and she wasn’t able to think clearly and if she tried to help him she would be more of a liability then help. She looked at Zhang Fei who was fighting the monsters to buy her time and clenched her fists in anger at her uselessness. She turned around and ran away praying for Zhang Fei to be safe. Zhang Fei saw An zining running away and sighed in relief as he dodged the swipe of the claws of the monster and attacked with the katana again but once again it didn’t leave any mark and simply bounced off.

[Host the weak spot of the monster at right above its head, it’s the black spot, the belly can do as well but I don’t think you can flip that monster upside down so easily considering how aggressive it is.]

Zhang fei heard Coco and took out a pistol he aimed it at the eyes of the monster and shot two times. Two bullets flew and hit the Crocodile exactly in the eyes, the monster thrashed in pain from the loss of its sight. Zhang Fei ran towards it and jumped while dodging the attack of the other 2 monsters and landed on body of the blinded monster. Zhang Fei drove his katana right into the black spot on the head. That area of the monster was also tough but still considerably much easier to pierce into when compared with the rest of its body. Zhang Fei thrust the Sword into the monsters skull and the monster yelped in pain as it stopped moving. For a normal human piercing the skin of the monster would have been a difficult thing but since Zhang Fei had eaten the ancient strengthening pill, his strength was more than sufficient for the kill. Black smoke started rising from the wound.

Zhang fei jumped away from the dead monsters body and as the other two monsters became frenzied form the death of its comrade and started attacking with even more ferocity. Zhang again blinded the other monster and killed it as well. The third monster understood Zhang Feis battle strategy and closed its eyes to shield it from the bullets with the help of its hard skin but since it still had to open its eyes to see and fight him it eventually ended up being blinded as well. All this took only a moment as people were still trying to run away from the monsters and the area was still crowded. Zhang Fei jumped up at the Monsters back and thrust his sword down, he tried to take out the sword but it became stuck unfortunately for him. The monster in its dying moments used it last bit of strength and swung its tail and attacked Zhang Fei from his back side which was also his blind side.

[Host watch out!] Coco gave out a warning but it was too late as the tail hit Zhang fei hardly. He felt a huge force on his body as he flew away and crashed against the wall of a building. It seemed that the force was tremendous as he even went through the wall and hit the wall on the other side. Zhang Fei groaned in pain as he felt the response from his pain receptors and fell down on the ground. The shock on the body was too great as his vision started blackening and he soon lost consciousness as the sounds of screams, destruction and inhuman roars started fading away.
