A Nerfed Gamer in Avia Chapter 14 - A Red Orge
I was standing beside Aegis. It would soon be time for my first raid. It honestly baffled me how similar the languages are here. My native language was English and because of the similarities it was easy to learn.
Anyway I was standing beside Aegis because he too was a brawler class Hunter. The man who was going to be leading our group was an elf named Taerin, he was a C Rank Hunter, Dragon Tier 1.
The Guild was sparing no expenses, they not only had Branch Leader Johnson who was Dragon Tier 4, but they also had two more Dragon Tier 1s.
The mages were being led by a Beast-Kin named Hunith. Her body covered in black fur, her two pointed ears went straight up and she had a long snout with many sharp teeth. She reminded me of a humanoid wolf.
I hadn’t seen many Beast-Kin around here. There wasn’t any living in Averni, Beast-Kin liked to go on trips to their ancestral land and because of how far Averni is from the port cities of Iciya, it meant Beast-Kin weren’t capable of doing so in a reasonable amount of time.
The only ones you saw were hunters brought in by the guild or hunters that came here to make some quick cash.
Taerin was a calm individual, there were about 12 Brawlers in the group of 30. When we arrived at the clearing we were stationed in at the minute, the leader had split off to discuss strategies.
They then gathered their groups together and told us what they came up with.
“So we will be damaging support as usual, just so I can better grasp the situation better, put your hand up if you are E Rank” Taerin said to us. We were all standing in a circle around him so we could all hear him well.
About 5 people put their hands up, me included. Most E Ranks weren’t confident enough in their abilities to go on this raid. So the majority of Hunters were D Ranks.
“Okay, so you 5 will have the duty of protecting the mages. Once we are done here I'll take you over to Hunith so she can memorise your faces. She needs to know who will be protecting her group after all” he said.
He then glanced at every D Rank “You lot will be assisting me and the tanks in dealing damage, we’ll be doing a simple tactic of hit and run. The Tanks will draw attention towards themselves and we will strike any enemies that we can, don’t aim to kill, just deal as much damage as you can. If you can get an easy kill off though then go for it” Taerin said.
All of the D Rank brawlers gave their agreement before they split off, Taerin then guided us E Ranks over to where Hunith was eating some sort of ration.
“Ah Taerin” Hunith said softly as her eyes locked onto his. Taerin then gestured to us 5 “these are the five E Ranks that will help in defending your group” he said.
Huntith then slowly looked over at us, she spent a few seconds inspecting us all seemingly taking a few extra seconds on me before she nodded “I hope I can count on you” she said with a smile.
As we all went to walk off I was stopped as I heard Huniths voice “Benjamin right? Can I speak with you?” she asked.
I turned and looked at her, her smile hadn't dropped, I was interested so I nodded and walked back up to her.
“Branch Leader Johnson told me you only failed your D Rank Advancement test because your father asked him to hold you to a higher standard. You are basically an unofficial D Rank because of this. I hope I can count on you to defend us.
This dungeon is much larger than any you have probably seen before. Which means the likelihood of a flanking attack is a lot more prominent than any other dungeon. I would like you to protect us to the best of your ability”. She said with a pleasant smile.
I slowly nodded “sure I can do my best, I am only here for the experience after all” I said, smirking in my mind. I enjoyed the little things. I nodded my head before giving my goodbyes and then I left to go join the other E Rank Brawlers, we were getting in position.
Soon we were gathered in front of the cave that indicated the entrance to the dungeon. The domed shaped walls were unnaturally smooth which made it obvious as a dungeon.
I had told Kearla not to interfere since I wanted the real experience of the dungeon. She agreed saying it was good for me to learn what it truly felt like. She would stay behind the mage group and only intervene if my life was threatened. She was confident she could crush any creature here in an instant.
We had travelled from Averni for a few hours. We were at a pretty large mountain. I had no idea how tall it was but it looked huge.
The Dungeon was located at the bottom of the mountain, it went deep inside.
The entrance to the dungeon was an unnaturally smooth arch. It was huge. The very top of it was about 25 metres. Considering Orges tended to be 8 metres to about 12 metres we were not surprised to see such a tall cave.
It was about 20-30 metres wide as well. It was more than enough space for our entire group to comfortably fit. Even as we spread up a bit we still didn’t reach both sides of the cave.
The tanks with Johnson leading them were lined up in front. The D Ranks were in groups of 2, said groups were spread out. The E Rank tanks were behind the groups of two to act as support for the D Ranks.
The D Rank Brawlers were just behind the E Rank Tanks, they were ready to fight. The D and E Rank mages were all at the back. The D Ranks were tasked with dealing the most damage. The E Ranks were there as support.
Either they would finish off Orges that were heavily damaged or they would help us E Rank Brawlers defend the D Rank Mages if needed.
I was located in front of the Mage group, standing just behind me was Hunith a white wooden staff with small amounts of black wood laid across it. The other E Ranks were spread around the Mage group. Two at the back and one at either side of the group.
We then slowly started advancing. It didn’t take long for Orges to be spotted. A group of 3 were further into the cave. I could sense their power. They were Earth Tier 3. I was in trouble here.
I had to be very careful.
Johnson and Taerin both ran forward. The two moved faster than I could see. Not long after the 3 Orges were dead on the ground. They had either had their heads cut off or their heads crushed in.
Johnson was using a mace and a shield. Both were glowing with magic. They were clearly enchanted. Taerin was using a glowing blue sword. It had some sort of fire enchantment that made it light it with flames covering it.
The fire was essential here. Orges had a ridiculously powerful regenerative ability. Fire was the only thing they were weak against.
Honestly I was heavily outmatched here. Even if I had the same cultivation I doubt I could win. I wasn’t equipped to deal with them which meant I needed to get better at magic as soon as possible.
Soon we had found another group of Ogres, this time there were about 6. Johnson, Taerin and Hunith moved forward. The 6 were quickly dealt with. These were all high Earth Tier but Taerin and Hunith were Dragon Tier 1 which was a massive jump in power compared to Earth Tier 3.
That’s not even mentioning the fact that Johnson was in Dragon Tier 4. He could’ve usually dealt with this dungeon on his own but the appearance of that Red Energy thing had set people on edge and Johnson wasn’t taking any risks.
Our pace continued at the same speed. We slowly moved deeper into the cave. The next group was a group of 10.
The three leaders couldn’t handle them all at once. About 3 got past them, rushing towards us with roars of anger. They raised their massive clubs that seemed to have been trees before they were turned into weapons.
The Orges were slowed by three fire spells. Three large balls of fire slammed into the creature's chests. They were moving too fast to be able to dodge out of the way.
Six Tanks then rushed forward, a pair on each Orge. They dodged strikes, blocked punches and kicks, and parried the Orges clubs.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
The brawlers then moved in, slicing or pounding the creature's legs to disable their mobility. Soon the creatures were dead on their backs. None had gotten through the line of Tanks and the three leaders were just finishing up.
This continued without many changes. The Orges that got through were efficiently and quickly dealt with by the groups.
Hunith, Taerin and Johnson were fine as well, none of them had taken any injuries.
After about an hour and a half we found ourselves at the entrance to a massive cavern. Before we had been lighting up the cave with spells from the E Rank Mages.
Also I hadn’t known before but we had a D Rank Healer. A mage who specialised in healing magic which was rare. It was a complex form of magic since you had to understand the ways the body worked.
Anyway the cavern was massive. It was a domed cavern. The top being about 50 metres up whilst the cavern was about 70 metres in diameter.
It was much bigger than we thought it would be but there was something else even more terrifying.
The room was occupied by about 20 Orges. They were similar to the ones we had seen before. Orges were generally shades of green. Their skin never really changed much unless a mutation happened.
Some monsters could mutate, they would change and become stronger. When Orges mutated they gained a red hue to their skin, gaining a resistance to fire as well as all of their abilities being increased.
The bad part was the fact that every single Orge in this cave had a red hue to their skin. All of them had mutated. Every single one of us froze at that. This was impossible.
But then my eyes landed on the “boss” of this dungeon. Its skin was completely red. There was no green left. That wasn’t even the worst part. It held a massive greatsword seemingly custom made for its size.
And its eyes shone with a red energy but this was different from that alpha lightning wolf. The red energy was calm. It simply made the creature's eyes glow, making it look more menacing but not as terrifying as the wolf had been.
The leaders considered retreating but they knew most of the Hunters here wouldn’t be able to outrun the Orges so they decided to fight.
The Ogre Chief as it was known slowly raised its greatsword and pointed it at our group. It barked out in a language I had never heard. It sounded like an ape. Its grunts were obviously an order since the large amount of mutated Orges turned and locked their eyes onto us.
They then charged. This entire time Kearla had been hanging back behind the group, letting me get the experience I needed. She was obviously bored.
The fight was gruesome. Johnson, Hunith and Taerin charged forward, taking as much attention as they could handle.
The D and E Rank Tanks as well as the D Rank Brawlers were forced onto the defensive as about 15 of the Orges charged at the group. They focused on defending and keeping the attention on them.
The D Rank Mages started throwing all sorts of spells. They were testing what worked best. The Ogres had a resistance to fire now but it wasn’t as high as we thought so fire was still the best option.
Once that was figured out all manner of fire spells were thrown at the groups of Ogres. The mages did their best to hold back the enemies.
Unfortunately two got through. Some D Ranks started beating them with spells as they charged at the mage group. The E Ranks joined them.
By the time they got to me they were heavily damaged and so I ran forward to meet them.
Qi was sent to my legs as I used Qi Step to move around the Ogres, I flowed like water using the smooth movements of WSRSF to flow between their legs and attacks. I couldn’t attack back even with them being this hurt.
But I was enough of a distraction which allowed the mages to finish them both off.
It looked like we would win but then a titanic roar sounded out. It carried the weight of the Chiefs power. It made every E Rank except me stumble at the power infused into it.
The chief raised its sword ready to join the fight. Its eyes ran over our group causing some of us to flinch.
Then its eyes landed on me. It was confused for a second then it realised something as bloodlust seemed to start pouring out of it.
The red energy in its eyes started blazing causing its eyes to seem like they were on fire. The red energy then slowly seeped out of its eyes as it panted in anger. The air it breathed out became hot steam as it shook in anger.
As the red energy slowly enveloped the chief's body it growled, its eyes locked onto me.
Johnson seemed to realise what was happening as he started charging towards me moving at a speed I couldn't see.
Then I felt a deep primal fear spread through my body. Before I even realised what was happening my arms raised into the air. I raised them into a block.
Hardening covered them, Qi was pushed into them as I overfilled QI Block making it as strong as possible.
The next moment the Chief was in front of me. Its greatsword swiped towards me. I was already bending backwards.
The sword slammed into my guard. Haki and Qi fought against it but they weren’t enough. I screamed as the sword sliced through my arms. My forearm and hands were separated from the rest of my arms.
The sword missed my head as it flew past my face. The sword sliced through a bunch of mages who were standing behind me. I wasn’t thinking clearly enough to count how many.
I fell onto my back, immediately rolling to the side, my body moved on instinct no matter how painful it was. The sword slammed onto the ground beside me where I was just laid.
The shockwave of the blow sent my body flying through the air. I slammed painfully into the ground. I felt something break as I tumbled across the floor, unable to stop my body.
I was stopped as my body slammed into the wall, a crater forming. The next moment the creature was in front of me but so was someone else.
Kerala swiped her hand at the encroaching sword, it was ripped into pieces as pure mana burrowed into it. The next moment the chief was ripped apart by a blast of mana.
The Kearla turned to the rest of the Ogres raising a hand as mana shot out towards the groups. Every Ogre froze as pure mana crushed them into paste.
The Ogres had been killed in less than a second.
She then turned to me and immediately crouched down “I hate to admit it but my knowledge of healing magic is limited” she said as her mana changed to a green light.
The light pressed against my stumps. The skin was slowly being fused together so the wound would stop dripping blood.
It took about a minute. Kerala was apologising the entire time “I am sorry, I hadn’t expected the chief to be that fast. It was abnormal and caught me off guard so I wasn’t ready when it suddenly increased so much in power”. I stopped her with a grunt.
I gritted my teeth as I spoke, the pain still great “get… my arms… bring them to me… quickly” I said through gritted teeth.
I had time now and I realised it was my right leg that had broken. Soon Kearla was in front of me holding my arms out to me.
I placed my right stump onto them as I put them into my inventory. I was glad that worked. Time was frozen in my Inventory so they would be fine.
Limb reattachment was possible but it would take awhile before father could get someone here. Even with the massive amount of influence he had, it would take time for the healer to travel here.
The only healer that would be capable of this would be one in the capital which was about a 3 month journey if you took the paths made for the journey.
The mage could use magic but it would still be a few weeks before they would arrive which meant I couldn’t train for that period.
I had no chance, the Sharingan couldn’t even see the chief move. It annoyed me that I couldn’t fight it but all this did was strengthen my resolve to get stronger.
Soon the group was moving, the D Rank healer fixed my broken leg which allowed me to walk. She had the Mp to do so because most other injured had died immediately or right after.
We had around thirty hunters, about 14 had been killed. Aeron had been killed. I hadn’t seen how but I saw Yuuko crying, Aegis comforting her. He had an arm missing.
Soon we were out of the cave. Immediately Kearla surrounded us both with wind magic. We were lifted into the air before we blasted off. Moving through the air towards Averni.
Any flying monsters that showed up were brutally dispatched by Kearla.
It took about 15 minutes to get back. My parents were waiting at the front of the mansion. They said they would wait for me to get back.
When they saw me slowly and gently touch down on the ground. They both ran over panic on their faces.
They asked all sorts of questions without giving me a chance to speak. Soon though I managed to get some words out.
“I’m fine, Kearla saved my life” that was definitely the wrong thing to say because mother switched from worried to furious as she turned and stomped over to Kearla.
“You said you’d protect him! Is this what you call protection!” she shouted at Kearla as she gestured at my missing forearms.
Kearla listened calmly as mother berated her in anger. As soon as she stopped out of breath, Kearla spoke “I have failed in my job, If you wish me to leave I will do so immediately although I offer my sincerest apologies” she said calmly as she bowed her head.
The calm words shook mom out of her anger as she rubbed her forehead with a sigh “no, you don’t have to go, Kearla. I'm sorry I shouldn’t have shouted at you. People make mistakes” mother said with a sigh.
“It won’t happen again,” Kearla said with a nod as she stood straight.
“If it does you won’t be allowed to be his bodyguard” father chimed in as mother nodded in agreement.
“Where are the rest of his arms?” Mom asked, Kearla gestured to me.
“I have them safe, they won’t degrade at all” I said with a sigh before I went to rub my forehead but ended up just hitting myself in the chin with my stump of an arm.
I sighed again at that before I looked at my parents, they were clearly confused as to how I had them but they trusted me.
“I’ll tell you some other time but right now I need some rest” I said “the rest of my arms will be fine. They are frozen in time and won’t degrade at all, i’ll explain tomorrow” I said as I moved past my parents and into the house.
I quickly got to my room and collapsed on my bed, falling asleep immediately.
