Chapter 25: Complexity

Chapter 25: Complexity

Looking at myself in the mirror I was checking to see if I had everything I needed. The clothes I had on were simple, while also having dirt stains on them showing I just came off of work.

I wore a simple pair of blue jeans that had cheap written all over them if one gave them a simple glance. Paired with a grey shirt which had a construction companies logo on it. Finally, a pair of ripped steal toe boots where on my feet completing this look.

Many people worked construction jobs in the slums, it was really the only high paying job they could attain easily, so many took this route.

My face and hair had nothing done to it, I already had a so called "rough" look to me.

I chose to not carry a gun for this mission, I need to get use to not having one on me nor rely on it. However, I did carry two daggers on me, but this was more than enough.

Daggers weren't really my specialty, although I was trained in how to properly use them, I never ended up getting much experience with them.

I walked over to my bed and picked up a black backpack that was sitting on it. It contained my jet black mask inside and a bullet proof vest in case of emergencies.

I decided to head out and make my way to my instructor who had my earpiece on him. The earpiece is a simple radio device used for communication, not only that but it has a camera on it as well.

If the earpiece is placed correctly, it is able to view almost everything around me. The exception to this is the areas to the opposite side the earpiece is on. It's almost like having one eye opened and the other closed.

The downside to this is that it would be fairly obvious that I have an earpiece, so in the daytime it will be stuffed deeply inside my ear.

The mission itself really did not have me all that worried. I have had to come to a realization that hard things usually grant rewards. This statement has proven false many of times as well, but I leave it up to my thought process to decide what is worth achieving.

Arriving at a blacked out 4 door vehicle, I opened the passenger side door and sat down on the white leathered seat.

I closed the door and looked to my left to see my dumb instructor wearing black shades and smoking what seemed to be a cigarette. The man noticed my gaze and pull out a carton and handed it over to me.

I looked inside to see it was all cigarettes with a lighter tucked in as well.

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

"I don't smoke, you should keep doing it though, I heard it does wonders for your lungs." My instructor looked over to me and decided to flip me off.

"How rude." I told the man and decided to look out the window to see the scenery of my home country.

"Hey dipshit the earpiece was in there too, you should try smoking though while you're hanging around the area you'll be working in. You'd look weird not smoking one."

I was bit surprised to find out the earpiece was in the carton and gave it another search.

The carton was pretty small, yet I still couldn't find the earpiece. I even took out all the cigarettes and lighter and looked through everything but was still not able to find it.

"God man you're an idiot give me that thing." He said this and just snatched the carton out of my hands.

I looked to see what the hell I even missed because I went through that whole damn thing. He put two fingers in the carton and I heard the sound of tape being ripped off.

He then took out a very small earpiece which was tan in color matching my own.

"Use your damn eyes idiot, if you can't see something naturally use Ki to enhance that vision of yours. Mana and Ki are there to be utilized to the fullest extent, both are energy forms, not people. Use and abuse them all you need to."

"I thought you simply put the damn thing in the carton, why the hell would you go that extra mile?"

"Do you hear yourself? This thing I'm holding cost quite the amount of money, not only that it also uses advanced Volestian technology meaning we don't want anyone getting their hands on it."

"Okay I get that, but we are inside of a damn compound full of our own people. Who the hell would have the balls to rob it here?"

"Idiot, do you really not think other spies are here from other countries? Volestia is strong, but isn't so damn strong where it can stop other people like myself from coming in. We make everything important complex; this is to slow down the intel our enemies receive."

"You're telling me we have agents from other countries in our own ranks? What about the other races though? Don't tell me they are here too. "

"That's our biggest problem actually. There's a load of Elves coming into human territories as spies. Those scumbags are also quite good at espionage, not in the way humans are though. Their observing skills are unparalleled, even right now our movements could be watched."

"You've got to be kidding me. How the hell are they coming all the way here? Isn't the ocean that separates us extremely dangerous?

"I have no clue honestly, for wartimes it's a lot easier to cross because of battleships, but they've been sending small groups which is unheard of. The worst part is the ones we've caught were all highly skilled, so I can only imagine the ones who are still roaming around."

"Do we at least have humans in their land? This at least evens out our playing field."

"Sadly, we do not. Our capabilities aren't that high where we could send agents across the ocean. Only during war is this possible and we would have to be the ones invading them. This is why the Fallen Empires academy is so damn important."

"Fuck, let's say I wasn't able to attain major intel, what would the affects be during the war with the Elves if that happens?"

"Most human countries would probably be annihilated, the reason for this though is because they would invade us. Defending is a lot easier than attacking, but our countries will have to deal with all the damage. Not only that, but the beginning of the war will be brutal because of lack on intel about the enemy. We changed a lot over the years, so we can only guess what everyone else has achieved in this time frame..."
