Noelle quickly pushed the feeling down, turned over, and went back to sleep.
She didn't know when Hendrix had returned. Half-asleep, she vaguely sensed someone watching her. The curtains were drawn, and the room was completely dark.
Even though she had a feeling, she still jumped in fright as soon as she opened her eyes. She let out a sharp gasp and instinctively shrank back.
Hendrix hurriedly turned on the lights. "It's me."
His voice sounded low and steady.
Noelle frowned at him.
"I just got back. You looked like you were sleeping well, so didn't wake you," he explained slowly. "Are you hungry? Do you want something to eat?"
Noelle swallowed back the curse sitting on the tip of her tongue and said, "I'm not hungry."
"I got you a cake," Hendrix said suddenly. "But chocolate this time. Want to try some?"
As he spoke, he pulled out a box.
However, the sight of the cake made Noelle feel queasy because it reminded her of that night. And the
moment those memories surfaced, she felt utterly ridiculous for ever believing and pitying him.noveldrama
"You don't want it?" Hendrix's voice came again. "That night, you seemed to like it, so I thought you'd want more. I guess... I was wrong."
For some reason, the way he said it made Noelle feel like he was... testing her.
Had he figured something out? Or was he just trying to gauge her reaction?
Noelle wasn't sure. She only responded calmly, "I just woke up. Cake feels too heavy right now."
"Oh?" Hendrix didn't seem surprised. "Then, what do you want? I can have someone bring it over."
Noelle glanced at him. "Can I have mac and cheese?"
Hendrix studied her for a moment, then suddenly smiled. "Of course."
He then made a call to have someone buy it. He even had them buy from multiple places to make sure at least one
suited her taste.
Then, he asked with a smile, "By the way, do you think it's a boy or girl?"
His eyes lit up as he spoke like a father genuinely looking forward to his child's arrival.
But Noelle wasn't fooled by his act. Instead, she turned the question back on him. "What about you? Do you want a boy or a girl?"
"I'd be happy with either." Hendrix's smile widened as he gazed at her softly. "As long as it's our child, I'll love them. But if it's a girl, that would be even better. She'd probably look just like you."
Noelle remained impassive. "But they say daughters take after their fathers."
"Really? Then, I hope it's a boy," Hendrix said with a laugh. "Wouldn't want them to be like me."
Noelle hesitated, then couldn't help but ask, "Why?"
Because I know I'm a terrible person."
His words caught Noelle off guard.
However, Hendrix casually continued in the same even tone, "Oh, right. You asked me about Maxwell earlier. Brandon and I have it all set up.
"We'll let Craig walk right into the trap. The more money he pours in, the bigger the collapse will be. Once
it all goes under, Maxwell will go straight to prison. What do you think?"
