"Kris," Thalassa whispered, her heart pounding inside her chest.
Kris took slow steps toward her, his expression utterly broken as he stared at her. "I should've known this was too good to be true."
His breath hitched in his throat, his heart squeezing so painfully that he thought it was going to implode. He wanted to believe his eyes were deceiving him, but the evidence was right in front of him.
His fingers twitched at his side, his jaw clenching painfully. "Getting back together with me...everything you said about letting the past go and giving me a second chance... I should have known it was all a lie. You lied to me. Why?"
Despite her racing heart, Thalassa glared at him. This wasn't how she wanted him to find out about her plans, but she refused to let herself feel guilty.
"What did you believe, Kris?" she hissed. "Did you really think I could ever forgive your mother after everything she did to me? After she had me assaulted to make you believe I cheated on you? After she framed me and sent me to jail for something I didn't do? After she had me attacked, killing our unborn child?!"
Kris slowly shook his head, his expression sorrowful, his voice hoarse as he spoke. "No... I knew you could never forgive her...but why not be honest with me? Why use me like I was nothing but a pawn in your plan?"
At that moment, the lights flicked back on. Kris slowly turned and walked out of the room, his heart breaking into a thousand pieces. As if that wasn't enough, his phone rang as soon as he stepped out. It was a call from Smoke.
"What is it, Smoke?" Kris asked, his voice tight.
"Mr. Miller, I have information about who was responsible for the attack on your ex-wife that led to the death of your unborn child."
Kris swallowed hard. "Who was it?"
Inside Linda's bedroom, Thalassa stood frozen, unable to move, locked in place by the sudden turn of events.noveldrama
"Oh my goodness, was that Kris?" Luisa asked through the earpiece.
"Yes," Thalassa whispered, even though all she wanted to do was scream.
She had thought today would be the day she finally gathered the evidence to have Linda arrested, but fate had played such a cruel joke on her.
"She knew..." She mused through gritted teeth. "Someone, she found out she was being investigated. That's why she's had all the evidence removed."
Looking at how the safe had been left open in haste, she was sure the evidence had been removed just a few minutes ago. But Linda, Cynthia and Susan had been downstairs all this time so who could she have sent to take the evidence out.
"I can't believe that woman's is getting away again!" Luisa screamed, followed by the sound of something shattering. Luisa cursed, "Oh shit."
"What?" Thalassa asked.
"Uh, Lassa, I think I just accidentally pressed the signal telling the police to come in."
Thalassa didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Everything had been planned so perfectly. The police had been stationed just a few streets away waiting for the signal to arrest Linda and secure the evidence.
"I guess we'll just have to tell them we failed," Thalassa whispered.
Dejected, she forced herself to walk out of the room and head downstairs. She could already hear the wail
of police sirens, and as she descended the stairs, the officers stormed into the house.
The party erupted into chaos as the guests murmured to one another, unsure of what was happening. "What is this? What the hell is going on?" Linda demanded, glaring at the officers. "What are you doing in my house?"
The chief of police held up a paper. "We have a warrant to detain you. You're suspected of involvement in crimes related to drugs and human trafficking.
A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. Linda crossed her arms, tilting her head confidently to the side. "Based on what evidence?"
The chief glanced toward the stairs, where Thalassa was descending. "Miss Thompson?"
"I didn't find it," Thalassa replied, her expression neutral despite the storm of anger raging inside her. Linda turned toward her, sneering. "I knew it! You little bitch! This was all an act to get into my house. I knew it."
The chief looked at Thalassa in shock. "Ms. Thompson, you assured us you would get the evidence."
Linda scoffed. "I can't believe you fell for this woman's tricks. All she has done since she came back is try to destroy me. She didn't find any evidence because there's nothing to find."
She jammed her hand on her hips. Now, if you'll excuse me, you're frightening my guests. Please get out of my house."
"Actually, no, Mrs. Miller," the chief
said firmly. "We may not have found the evidence we were looking for, but a case is already being built against you thanks to Miss
Thompson. You will have to come with us for questioning at the station."
Linda's expression twisted in fury. "This is ridiculous! I am not going anywhere with you!"
"Yes, you are, Linda," Kris declared as he stepped forward from the crowd, his cold glare fixed on his mother.
Linda looked at him, shocked. "What are you talking about, Kris? And why are you calling me by my name? I am your mother!"
"Mother?" A cold chuckle escaped Kris's lips. "No, you're not a mother, Linda. Because a real mother would never make it her mission to harm her son's wife and unborn child."
Linda's heart skipped a beat. "Kris, what are you talking about?"
The look on Kris's face shifted from
cold to pure Ratred. “I know it was you who ordered the attack on Thalassa, the attack that caused the loss of our child. And I swear, by the life of that child you took from me, that I'm going to make you pay for it
An even louder gasp swept across the crowd as Kris turned to the chief of police, his voice icy. "Arrest this woman. She's a murderer."
