Chapter 3

Booker's gut churned with worry as he led the remnants of Spearhead Guild deeper into the winding subterranean lair. According to the mission tracker, they were nearing Bear's location in the heart of the shadowy tunnels.

Please let us reach him in time, Booker prayed silently. The thought of losing his grizzled mentor was too much to bear.

A deafening roar echoed ahead, followed by the unmistakable sounds of combat. "Bear!" Booker shouted, sprinting towards the source. The team charged after him, weapons drawn.

They burst into a massive cavern and skidded to a halt, beholding the scene - Bear was engaged in fierce battle with a hulking horned demon wreathed in black flame. Though bleeding from multiple wounds, the big man swung his axe relentlessly at the fiery fiend.

"Bear! We're here to help!" Booker called out.

The demon lord glanced over and grinned malevolently. "More lambs to the slaughter! I am Balgorath, Lord of Frenzy, and you shall all perish here!"

With a bellow, Balgorath unleashed a shockwave that knocked half the guild flying. Booker managed to throw up a hasty shield around himself and Bear.

"Hold on, I've got you!" Booker cried, pouring mana into maintaining the barrier against the demon's onslaught.

Nearby, the guild regrouped and began unleashing a barrage of gunfire and spells at Balgorath. But the demon seemed only further enraged, horns glowing ominously.

Booker knew they had only one chance. "Bear, hit him with all you've got left on my signal!" he shouted over the din. Bear nodded grimly, hefting his axe.

This novel's true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

Mustering his remaining mana, Booker projected a blinding flash right at Balgorath's face. "Now!"

Bellowing savagely, Bear leapt forth and brought his axe down with all his might. Balgorath staggered back, ichor pouring from a deep gash in his torso.

"You will pay for this!" the demon howled as he dissolved into smoke and ash. The battle was won, but at grave cost. Together they had overcome.

Booker hurried to help Bear, who was finally able to grin at his protege. "Knew you'd come through, lad," he rumbled proudly. Relief flooded Booker, chasing back the shadows. They had defied death and darkness this day. And though weary in body and heart, still hope shone bright within him. Dawn yet lingered, if one dared carry its flame.

Bear leaned heavily on his axe, exhaustion seeping through his bones. But triumph still blazed within him - they had conquered the vile demon Balgorath and rescued their captive guildmates. Now to make the long trek back home.

As Booker supported Bear's weight, guiding him toward the glowing portal exit, an ominous shadow fell over the cavern. The air grew chilled and stale.

"Leaving so soon, mortals?" a cruel voice echoed. Before them stood a taloned demonic figure, darkness writhing around him. "After depriving me of my ally Balgorath?"

Bear's grip tightened on his axe haft as he stepped forward. "Out of our way, fiend. Before we send you to join him."

The demon chuckled coldly. "Brave words. I am Damien, Lord of Dread. But your lives now belong to Oblivion."

He gestured, and skeletal arms burst from the stone floor, seizing the guildmates. Booker cried out as they dragged him toward a yawning void.

Bear saw the boy's desperate eyes find his. In that moment, he knew what must be done. With a fierce roar, Bear charged Damien, axe swinging fiercely.

The demon narrowly dodged the blows, surprise flashing across his face. Bear pressed the attack relentlessly, driving Damien back step by step.

"Go now, all of you!" Bear shouted to his companions. "I'll hold him off!"

Understanding dawned in their eyes. One by one they broke free and raced for the portal as Bear occupied Damien's fury.

At last only Booker remained struggling in the skeletal grasp. "Bear, no!" the lad cried. "We have to retreat together!"

Bear met his gaze steadily. "My place is here, lad. This old dog still has some fight left in him."

He parried a blast of dark energy from Damien's palms. "Lead them well, Booker. The light is yours to carry now."

With that, Bear turned and threw himself fully against the demon lord. As their earth-shaking battle recommenced, Booker finally tore away and disappeared into the portal with the others.

Bear smiled grimly through the pain as Damien's claws raked his chest, staggered but not felled. He had ensured his friends' survival, but it was enough. The true battle was won.

Let darkness take him. Bear had stood defiant to the last and lit the way for hope. Now dawn's promise rested in younger, stronger hands. So it had always been.

With a final roar of challenge, Bear dragged Damien into oblivion's embrace with him. Light endures, if the brave take up the torch. This was merely his time to pass the flame.
