Chapter 16

Astor followed Captain Darkholme uneasily through the sterile halls of the Aegis facility. He still did not understand why they requested his presence today alongside his former mentor Ava. The mysterious military group had been highly secretive in recent communications.

Astor's sense of unease only grew as he and Ava followed the Aegis escorts deeper into the secure facility holding Vex. Something felt off - the walls seemed to warp and blur at the edges of his vision. `

Astor's steps faltered as they entered a secured chamber, and he beheld a familiar figure imprisoned behind glowing barriers - Dr. Miles, or rather the demon Vex wearing that guise. Astor felt his pulse quicken at the sight of the monster who had tormented and manipulated him.

"Surprised to see me, boy?" Vex rasped, smiling cruelly.

Astor trembled with fury and fear. "You should be locked away forever for your crimes!" he managed through gritted teeth.

Vex laughed harshly. "Come now, don't you miss our special times together?" His mocking gaze turned to Ava. "What of you, my dear?"

Ava's expression was stony. "The only mistake I rue is not exposing your vile deception sooner."

Darkholme shared an uneasy glance. "We need the two of you here in case Vex shares key intelligence,"

Astor shook his head vehemently. "I want no part in this! That monster deserves no mercy." He turned to leave, but Darkholme caught his arm.

"Please Astor, we wouldn't ask if lives weren't at stake," she implored.

Ava touched his shoulder. "The Captain is right. This is a chance to prevent others from enduring Vex's cruelties."

Astor wavered, hating the idea of being anywhere near Vex but understanding the stakes. Finally, he nodded reluctantly. "Just promise me we won't stay any longer than absolutely necessary."

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Vex chuckled from his cell. "Oh, I have a feeling we'll be getting reacquainted quite well, old friends."

Astor suppressed a shudder at the demon's chilling words.

Beside him, Ava whispered "Be alert, all is not right here." She too could evidently sense the subtle wrongness permeating this place.

Astor recoiled as he saw not Vex imprisoned, but a shadowy realm of swirling chaos and tormented souls crying out in anguish.

"An illusion..." Astor breathed. "But how?"

A familiar cruel laugh echoed from the darkness. "Come now boy, you didn't truly think your mortal cage could contain me?"

Vex emerged, eyes burning with sadistic glee. "Welcome to my domain, little pawns. Your dimension bends all too easily to my whims."

Astor steadied his nerves, ready to fight or flee this nightmare. "What is the meaning of this trickery, demon?"

Vex smiled coldly. "Consider it a reward from my new benefactor in exchange for a...partnership. He finds your gifts useful for his plans."

Cold dread flooded Astor. They had stumbled into some deeper demonic scheme, and he and Ava were the bait.

"We want no part in your unholy pacts!" Astor declared, hands crackling with psychic energy. "Release us at once!"

Vex tsked mockingly. "Still have some defiance left, I see. We have ways of ensuring cooperation from gifted mortals like yourselves."

His shadowy claws lengthened. "Consider this long overdue reunion a taste of the hospitality awaiting should you refuse my associate's wishes.

Mitch hurried after Clara as she strode purposefully through the halls of the Portal Security Agency's central headquarters. He had never seen the unflappable founder so agitated before.

"Are you certain the information from Bates is accurate?" Mitch asked, struggling to match Clara's urgent pace. "Allegations of Director Black colluding with demons seem unbelievable."

Clara's expression was grim. "I wish I could deny it, but the signs are undeniable. Black has gone rogue and desperately wants to hide it."

She entered the code to unlock a heavily secured door. "Bates may be self-serving, but he was too terrified to lie about Black abducting Astor and Ava for some unholy ritual."

Mitch felt sick. He had trusted Joshua like a father once. To think he could commit such atrocities...

Inside the vault room, Bates sat chained to a chair but sprang to his feet at their entrance. "You have to stop Black before it's too late!" he implored them. "Who knows what he's conjuring with those poor souls."

Clara seized the man by his collar. "You will tell us everything you know. All your demonic dealings with Black, now!"

Bates nodded frantically. "Of course, of course! Just please protect my boy from Black's assassins."

Clara released the trembling man as he began recounting months of covert meetings and ominous requests from the fallen Director. The picture emerging turned Mitch's stomach. How had corruption rooted so deeply without any of them noticing?

Finally Bates fell silent, head bowed in shame. Clara's expression was grave as she turned to Mitch. "Black clearly feels threatened enough by what we've uncovered to lash out. But we have right on our side. Will you stand with me?"

Mitch met her eyes with steely resolve. "To the very end. Let justice be done."
