Chapter 13

Vex paced within the confines of his mystic cell, and claws curled in barely contained fury. That damned lieutenant Wolfe had seen through his disguise and ruined everything! He had been so close to victory, and now here he languished, imprisoned by petty mortals.

"Enjoying your new accommodations?" came a sly voice from the shadows.

Vex whirled, eyes narrowing as the demon Damien materialized on the other side of the shimmering barrier. "Come to gloat, have you?" Vex spat.

Damien clicked his tongue. "Now, now, no need for hostility between allies. I'm simply relieved those troublesome humans managed to restrain your...enthusiasm."

Vex snarled, lashing out at the barrier with a crackle of dark energy. "Always so cautious, aren't you, Damien? That's why I'll win in the end - I dare take risks!"

Damien sighed. "And look where recklessness has gotten you. Contained like a rabid beast."

"I will escape this prison," Vex declared. "And when I do, all your timid schemes will seem like child's play!"

"Assuming the humans don't exterminate you first," Damien replied mildly.

Vex advanced until they stood nose to nose, separated only by the shimmering pane. "You meddle in my affairs at your peril," he warned in a low voice.

Damien merely gazed back steadily. "Some friendly advice between allies - patience and cunning achieve what brute force cannot. You may keep your...enthusiasms...in check until the way is clear."

With that, the demon vanished, leaving Vex fuming in solitude once more. He would show Damien and these pathetic mortals the folly of believing they could contain his ambition. Vex merely needed to wait for the proper moment to unleash fury unfettered.

For now, he would seem to submit, lull them into complacency. But when Vex struck at last, his vengeance would be legendary. They would look back in longing to the days when he was their prisoner rather than their scourge. The feasting would come, yes indeed. He had time yet to savor their folly.

Mitch signaled his team to halt as the dilapidated cabin came into view. According to their intel, this was where the rogue portal pioneer Sofia was hiding out. Consorting with demons and selling guild secrets if the rumors were true.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

"Fan out, weapons ready," Mitch ordered tersely. "Safeties off - the Director wants her taken alive if possible, but lethal force is authorized."

The heavily armed agents crept forward, senses alert. Mitch felt his pulse quicken. After years of chasing shadows, finally, a chance to confront the darkness head-on.

With a crash, the cabin door splintered inwards as they dynamited the entrance. "Go, go go!" Mitch shouted, leading the breach.

Inside, a lone figure stood waiting calmly by the far wall. Sofia. She regarded Mitch coolly as they trained rifles on her.

"So they sent you to do their dirty work," she said. "I must admit, I'm disappointed."

Mitch's finger tensed on the trigger. "You're consorting with demonic forces threatening humanity. Don't pretend the moral high ground."

Sofia's eyes narrowed. "And what of your own masters using children as weapons? How are you better?"

"Enough talk, get on your knees!" barked Mitch's lieutenant. But Sofia only smiled thinly.

In a blink, she vanished, only to reappear behind Mitch's team, golden flames engulfing her fists.

"You should not have come here," she intoned as the agents reeled. A fiery shockwave rippled out, flinging Mitch painfully against the far wall, his vision blacking out momentarily from the impact.

By the time Mitch's head cleared, two of his men were down, the rest returning fire at flickering mirages of Sofia teleporting unpredictably around the small space.

Gritting his teeth against the pain, Mitch manned the radio. "Code Red, target out of control! We need backup now!"

He had underestimated Sofia's newfound demonic power. But the Director had entrusted this mission to Mitch for a good reason. One way or another, he would not fail.

Sofia had strayed too far into the darkness. For the sake of all mankind, he had to take her down while a glimmer of hope for redemption remained.

Karen steadied her nerves as she, Lea, and Mike approached the decrepit cabin where Mitch and his team were facing off against the rogue explorer Sofia. As Mitch's pupils, they had been called in to provide backup against the dangerous portal pioneer.

Karen glimpsed flashes of golden flame through the cracked windows as Sofia unleashed her newfound demonic abilities against Mitch's overwhelmed agents.

"Remember your training," Mitch had told them. "Do not hesitate to use lethal force if necessary."

But Karen's hands trembled on her mystic rifle. Sofia had once been a hero to her and countless other aspiring portal explorers. Could Karen really take her life if ordered?

Lea looked similarly uneasy while Mike set his jaw in grim determination. Their mentor was in peril - they had to act.

On some unspoken signal, the three teens smashed through what remained of the front door, weapons raised. The air shimmered from residual magic as they scanned for targets.

A rasping laugh sent chills down Karen's spine. Sofia materialized atop a ruined bookcase, eyes blazing like molten gold.

"They send children to subdue me now?" Sofia spat. "You three should not be here."

"Please ma'am, stand down!" Karen pleaded. "Don't make us do this!"

Sofia's expression softened for a moment. But then her fists flared brighter. "So be it then."

Golden flames rained down, scattering Karen and her friends. They returned fire, but their attacks seemed to vaporize against Sofia's shield.

Only Mike's force blast managed to stagger her briefly. But Sofia recovered quickly, eyes aflame with centuries of fury.

"If you will not yield, you leave me no choice," she intoned. Karen's heart wrenched. Had Sofia fallen so far? Or did she have a point about their own masters' hypocrisy? Doubt tore at Karen's resolve.

But when Sofia sent a fiery lash toward Lea's unprotected side, instinct took over.

Karen didn't hesitate - her mystic rifle cracked, and the shot struck home. Sofia crumpled, the light in her eyes dimming. It was over in an instant.

Mike clasped Karen's shoulder as she lowered the smoking rifle, stunned by what she had done.

"You saved us; you did what was needed," he said gently. But Karen wondered if she could ever see herself as a guardian again after this day. Right and wrong had blurred, leaving only blood on her hands and a void in her heart that would not easily mend
