Chapter 2 Trapped

It seems that a young couple who used to live here were eating takeout noodles at the dining table. When they were halfway through their meal, they suddenly encountered something that frightened them greatly, causing them to rush out without changing their shoes and even spilling the soup on the table.

"Because of their panic, they knocked over the trash can on the side and rushed out wearing slippers without even changing into their usual leather shoes or high heels," Harry looked at the living room in front of him, and a scene of the young couple's chaotic and frightened escape emerged in his mind.

But what could have frightened them so much that they would run out like that, even spilling the soup and knocking over the trash can?

"Could it be...there really was a sudden flood last night? The couple discovered it and rushed out in a panic, spilling the soup because they were running too fast and didn't even have time to change their shoes or close the door."

Harry tightly clenched his fists, palms slowly sweating: "And because I was drunk and slept too soundly, I didn't know anything. Could it be that I'm the only one left in this entire building? Did everyone else escape?"

This thought made him feel cold all over, and the chill in his heart grew deeper.

"No, what kind of sudden flood could completely submerge an entire modern city in just half a day? That's completely unreasonable."

Although Harry had been drinking heavily last night, he still had some memory. He had at least stayed up until around one o'clock in the morning, and it hadn't rained at all. Even if he counted from one in the morning until now, it had only been seven hours. What kind of flood could completely submerge a modern city in less than seven hours?

Looking at the living room, Harry did not immediately rush in. Instead, he felt a strange feeling, as if there was a terrifying monster hidden in the living room, waiting for him to enter so that it could suddenly rush out and tear him apart.

When his eyes fell on the telephone on the coffee table, he suddenly realized that he had forgotten that he could have called for help instead of just rushing out into the hallway to find someone.

Harry didn't have his phone with him, so he went back to his own apartment and found his phone on the bedside table. He tried to call his girlfriend Amma, who was two years younger than him, from the same company, and had been dating for less than two months. Amma hadn't told her parents yet, so she still went home every night and didn't live with Harry.

But when he tried to call Amma, he found that his phone had no signal and couldn't make any calls.

"What's going on? The signal here has always been good."

Harry tried calling several numbers, including his parents and his best friend Li Yongsheng, but none of them could be reached.

"Why is there no signal at all?" Harry followed up by calling the emergency hotline, but still, there was no response. Cold sweat appeared on his forehead, and the situation was getting more and more bizarre.

Not only did his phone have no signal, but the Wi-Fi network he was connected to also had no signal. All the WeChat and QQ on his phone were offline.

He tried to turn on the TV, only to find that the power was out.

Then Harry remembered the landline phone he saw in the living room of the young couple's apartment.

If his phone had no signal, what about the landline phone?

He didn't have a landline phone, so he had to go to the young couple's apartment to try to use their phone.

Harry returned to the door of the young couple's apartment. The security door was still open. He stared at the landline phone on the coffee table in the living room, feeling a vague sense that the phone might not work, but he still went in.

Although he didn't have much hope, he couldn't miss any chance to contact the outside world.

As soon as he entered, Harry smelled a strange odor and his eyes fell on the trash can on one side.

He smelled a stench from the spilled trash can, which contained some leftover food that had already turned moldy and emitted a foul smell. Looking at the table, he saw that the noodles spilled on it had many mold spots.

Harry reached out and touched the table, feeling a layer of dust.

"If they really felt something was wrong last night and ran out, how could there be such a thick layer of dust on the table in just half a day? These foods would not have become moldy and rotten. Could it be that they have been away from home for many days?"

"Something is very wrong with this house..." Harry felt a growing sense of fear and dread for the lifeless house, but he didn't leave. He looked at the landline phone on the coffee table covered in dust and reluctantly picked it up, but found that there was no sound on the other end.

Harry's heart sank, but he still tried to call the emergency hotline.

Sure enough, there was no response.

The landline phone couldn't be used either.

The last glimmer of hope was gone, and Harry's feeling of unease towards the house grew stronger. He finally couldn't take it anymore, threw the phone on the table, and rushed out.

When he reached the hallway, Harry took a deep breath and his fear slightly dissipated, but the feeling of helplessness grew stronger.

"What should I do now? Is it really that everyone has evacuated and I'm the only one left here? But even if everyone in the city has left, why is there no signal at all? What's going on? Is Amma safe and sound?"

Harry felt his mind was in chaos, and it took him a while to force himself to calm down. He looked up and saw the elevator at the end of the hallway.

Although the flood had completely submerged the building below the thirtieth floor, even if the elevator still worked, he couldn't take it down. But Harry still walked over and tried to press the elevator button, but there was no response. Obviously, the elevator had already stopped running due to a power outage.

Harry then pushed open the two wooden doors on one side of the hallway to reveal a stairwell leading up to the twenty-ninth floor.

He walked in and saw that the stairs leading to the twenty-ninth floor were already submerged in water, with the water level only four or five centimeters from the ground on the thirtieth floor.

The water looked quite murky, and Harry saw plastic basins, towels, garbage bags, and other debris floating in it, and even a dead rat floating in it.

Harry squatted down, hesitated for a moment, and then gently touched the water in front of him with his hand, then pulled it back and watched the water droplets fall onto the surface, creating small ripples. Then, he took a deep breath.
