“Hey Sophia, why don’t we have farms here yet?” I ask.

“Because if the people selling food to us somehow aren’t able to anymore we would have worse problems than lack of food.”

“I don’t understand.”

“The village west of here has a mage, I think he is around your age. He can make soil better and plants grow faster. The village is producing a great surplus of food, so much that the price of the food is falling.”

“... How much has it fallen?”

“Around 85%. Food is not a problem anymore in the south of the kingdom, well, at least vegetables.”

“Then can’t we start to breed cows or something? Unless there is another way to get meat I don’t know.”

“You could always hunt.”

“I am talking about getting meat to the people, not me.”

“People don’t usually eat that much meat anyways.”

“That is a big problem, people need meat Sophia, we eat it everyday.”

“I hunt our meat, we deserve it.”

“That doesn’t change the fact that we need a way to get a lot of meat.”

“Why do you want the city to have a farm so bad?”

“First, I have to live here for now. Second, I am not a heartless monster. Third I know more about how to be healthy than most of the doctors I know.”

“Ok, let’s say we give the land to someone or a group, how do you want this to work?”

“How about we make a contest as well as just ask people to start a farm?”

“Explain.”

“We could advertise that we are looking for people who want and/or know how to raise farm animals like chicken, pigs, cows or even horses if things go smoothly. Along with this we also put a bounty where if you can prove that there is a way to get quality meat fast without anything bad happening or with a really low risk that can be managed, they get a sum of money and teach others how to do it.”

“How do we pay this?”

“You mean values or how we get the money?”

“Values.”

“Offer 1000 Kir per year that someone can shave off taking care of the cow along with a monthly salary starting at 50 Kir depending on the quality of meat we get using the method. They keep all the profits.”

“We would also have to explain that only the best one would receive the prize, right?”

“Yes, also let’s put that if you can reasonably produce meat you can keep the land we give.”

“We would have to find a way to extend the wall. Maybe someone who knows how this wall was made is still alive.”

“Don’t do that, if we leave them outside the wall, jobs for guards will come from the people trying to start farms.”

“The risk is going to increase with that.”

“Just create a law or something saying that if you're caught stealing cattle you will be severely punished, like torture or something.”

“Wouldn’t that be a little too much?”

“You can always say you will throw them in the Sure-Death Forest.”

“I will think more about the law part, the rest I think I can take care of in a few days.”

“Do your best, I will be going now.”

“How is it today?”

“Pretty sure it is just another student of that crazy elf.”

“Don’t they learn? You almost killed the last one.”

“And he almost destroyed the house.”

“Anyway, take care.”

It’s been a little more than two months since I spoke with the king and the other heads about my magic. A lot of things happened and as I walk to find my next challenger I start to remember.

Today is the 10th of Libra. I have been studying magic a little more since we got back.

My job is only to see if everything is going as intended by Sophia and give some opinions if necessary. I can pretty much do anything else as long as I am available to her.

She has some advanced books about magic, half of them I can’t read as they are in a strange language I never saw. I just know they are about magic because there are a lot of runes in them.

What I was looking for was really hard to find. Most books about magic are just telling how to use a spell and what it does, not really that many about actual development and research about magic.

I found a little bit in one book that helped me create a new spell. At least for me, I am pretty sure the rune version of this exists.

The spell is a way to make the entire body of the user become an element. In the book I found it said that if one in complete synchrony with his mana one can become magic itself. There were some research notes about how some powerful monsters can do it. The best exemple is the shadow snake. It is a powerful monster that looks like any normal snake you would find but it can become a shadow and dive into them. It can still be harmed by most elemental attack spells but it is impervious to physical attacks as you can’t cut a shadow normally.

I have only been experimenting for two days now but things are going fast for something I have no idea what I was supposed to be doing. I can make one of my hands stay ablaze without burning myself if I really concentrate. I can also hold something without it being burned in this state.

I will put this on my training regiment as I do my work.

Today is the 15th of Libra, it is morning. As me and Sophia are eating our breakfast Monica comes back from the door with a letter to me.

“Any idea from who this is from?” I ask, confused as the letter has nothing on it.

“I wouldn’t even know it was for you Miss Lucia if the courier didn’t say.” Monica answers me while sitting down to eat with us.

“Open up, the fastest way to find out.”

I open it and start to read it.

“Be ready! Before noon we are coming to conduct experiments. Services will be done to your community in exchange for cooperation. By Maxoiliodas.”

“Crazy people are coming.” I say half-joking.

“Who is coming?”

“Just read the letter.” I say as I give the letter to Sophia.

“They could send this a few days in advance.” Sophia complains.

“If they did that we could refuse.”

“Let’s just hope they don’t try to explode you.”

“Yeah.”

Almost 2 hours later a teleport rift opens near the door of the mansion and from it 3 people come out of it one of them being Maxoiliodas.

“We have arrived, where is the girl?” Maxoiliodas asks.

“Here.” I say while leaving the office.

“Welcome to Sagrada.” Sophia says while also leaving the office.

“Ok, to business. To my right is one of my aprendices, Sophia was it? Until tomorrow he is yours, do what you want with him. Girl, the person to my left will need to examine you, show your room to her, I will be waiting.”

I feel like I don’t really have an option here, he is not angry or anything about the arm and since I got my money a few days ago I am also ok with things as they are.

I guide the hooded figure to my room and to my surprise when we get there she reveals herself as a demon.

“Thanks for not screaming, most people tend to do that.” She says in a really calm and beautiful voice. She has the voice of an opera singer.

She is just a few centimeters shorter than me. A really dark skin that doesn’t reflect any light, A bright short yellow hair, not blonde, but a really opaque yellow. She has a red sclera and red eyes. I see two little horns coming out of her head almost invisible due to the hair. Also her canines jump out of her mouth so she can’t keep her mouth really closed. Besides that she looks really human and she is really beautiful, shame she doesn’t show curves in the robe she is using.

“I am open to the idea that demons are not killing machines bent on destroying humans. But you care to explain?”

“The short version is that a small number of demons can learn to fight our curses and not attack humans. The Institute is helping us as a way to stop this stupid race war.”

“I will accept that as an answer for now. So what are you here for exactly?”

“I am a doctor, one especialized in people like you who are the spawn of demon infections.”

“So that is what my situation is called?”

“That is the term me and my companions use. It is not something so common that the people know about.”

“So what do I need to do?”

“Get naked and lie down in your bed. I need to examine your body with a spell and clothes get in the way.”

“..Sure, don’t be surprised with what you see.” I say while removing my clothes.

To my surprise again, she is ok with what she sees.

“I saw demons like you… Let’s start this.” She says while using a spell in her eyes and hands as she begins to look at me really closely.

After a few minutes she begins to touch my body as well.

“Turn around please, I need to check your back now.”

I comply.

A few more minutes of examination later we finish, I think. She inspected even my privates but not in any sexual way, which is a relief for some reason.

“Yes, I am able to treat people of all races even without the use of magic. I also know their biology quite well.”

“Can you tell me how long will it take until I have my period?”

“You mean when you become fertile?”

“At least my female side. I am pretty sure I can’t have kids with another woman but I should have a normal female body beside the dick, right?”

She stops for a second.

“I am sorry to inform you but you will be unable to have kids as long as you live.”

I can’t really describe how I am feeling right now besides having received a punch in the gut.

“Why?” I ask desperately, almost shouting.

“Your demon parents, not your human ones, are demons that are unable to reproduce normally. Since you got both their blood and flesh but you are still human, you are also unable to reproduce like a normal human or demon.”

“What do you mean demon parent?”

“Your human parents probably had some sort of physical contact with those demons. Even a touch is enough to curse a human to carry the demon seed inside them and you had the lack of luck for both of your parents to have the seed of those demons.”

“Can’t I just remove the curses?”

“If you do that you will die or worse, stop existing.”

“Why?” I ask, almost crying.

“Your human soul is the only thing holding your body together and your body is making sure your fractured soul is not leaving.”

“What do you know about my demon parents.”

“I am sorry to say not much. They are the only part of the race of demons that naturally don’t hate humans or other races as they need to have intercourse with them as well to maintain contact with these races to reproduce. They are quite hard to find.”

“... Thanks…”

“I will take my leave now.”

After that I dress up again and go down again but I am dead inside, anyone can see it.

“What did you discover Razia?” The elf asks.

“The new method that Miss Lucia uses to cast spells has nothing to do with her body. Anyone who trains should be able to archive what she did, at least in my medical opinion. I found nothing exclusive to her that would help her in that.”

“If that is the case, let’s leave.”

“As you wish sir.”

The elf just opens another rift and leaves.

I sit on the sofa in the living room and just stay there until it is lunch time.

“Lady Lucia, are you ok?” Monica asks, shaking me a little.

“...” I can’t even say anything. One of the few things I really wanted is impossible for me naturally.

I spend all day like this. When night hits I just go to bed. At some point I feel Monica doing something to me but I don’t open my eyes, at this point I am not feeling any pleasure. I know I need to recover but the thought of knowing that I can’t have kids is haunting me more than I like.

In my old life I couldn’t have kids because of the amount of danger I had around me. The Mafia, corrupt politicians, low-level gangsters. When you have your hands in the money of that many people someone will try to do something with you. I had to fight, run and kill lots of people to protect myself. If I had to protect someone else I would have been dead a long time before I died in that explosion that brought me here.

The thought of having a family, a wife, kids and living a normal life was always in the back of my mind, I think that is one of the reasons I hated people who didn’t take care of their kids as it was something I couldn’t do as I didn’t have any. But I was too deep in the underworld to live in the light and the women there are not really wife material and the children that grow up in the environment that don’t die grow worse than their parents, I saw too many examples of that.

As the morning arrived I got up and tried to continue with my normal routine but I was unable to.

“Lucia… LUCIA!”Sophia shouts at me.

“... What?” I say confused as I was spacing out.

“Did you hear anything I said?”

“Were you saying something?”

“What did that woman do to you yesterday? You don’t look ok.”

“And why do you care?” I say angrily.

“Because you are not working like you are supposed to.”

“Then shut up, maybe that way we can both work like we should.”

“You work for me, show some respect.”

“Make me. I only respect your strength. If it wasn't for me the people of your city would have started to move to the farming cities and villages near here.”

“Maybe I should slap you so the bad education your mom gave you leaves you.”

I get angrier.

“I have no mom.” I shout while leaving the office and then the mansion.

At this point I am hearing nothing and seeing red. I go out of the city and start to casts spell and swing my swords at the air to try cool my head but I keep remembering the talk I just had with Sophia, the word mom makes me boil in rage and everytime I cast something or swing my sword the word just pops inside my head again in a vicious circle.

“STOP! The people are afraid.” I hear Sophia shouting at me.

“Shut the fuck up. Leave me alone!” I shout back.

Sophia gets near me.

“Don’t you have any manners?”

“Just as much as you have a face” I say angrier.

Sophia just punches me making me fall to the ground.

I stand up and swing Mira at her. She draws her short sword and parries me.

I start to randomly swing Mira at her and she is either dodging or parrying it without even sweating.

I start to throw nova blasts at her too but even using runes she can still counter me using light shields, a spell that creates an aura around the use that protects her from any damage.

At some point I am punched in my gut and fall to the ground on my back.

Sophia mounts me holding my arms and legs with her weight.

“Stop! You don’t need to do any of this!” She shouts at me.

“Shut up, you know nothing!”

“Everyone has problems, stop being a brat and throwing a tantrum.”

“No! Shut up. What do you know about my problems? You had a nice house and people around you. The people in the city love you even if you look like you do, they never once question why or what you do. You have a house, maids, you had a family, what do you know about problems?”

At his point she slaps me in anger.

“What happened to you?” She asks me angrily

At his point I just start to cry while she is pressing me to the ground.

“Why can’t I have a family? Why do the gods hate me so much? Why can’t I be happy even for a little?”

I don’t remember the last time I cried so much. As I started to cry Sophia embraced me as I cried about what I was told by the demon doctor.

After I calmed down a little she walked back to the house where Monica served us some tea.

“Lucia, I will tell you something that only a few people know.” She says while sitting to my right and hugging me.

“I am also unable to have children… These scars go deeper than just my skin.”

I look a little in shock at her.

“I am sorry for the way I spoke with you, I was also in a similar state when I recovered enough to understand what had happened to me”

“I’m also sorry. I shouldn’t have lash out at you or said the things I did just because I was angry.”

She kisses me on my forehead.

“Just promise me to take care of yourself and let the people around you help you. If I was left alone, who knows what I would have done.”

“Probably destroyed a city knowing your strength.”

“Maybe.”

We both start to laugh.

“Lucia, I don’t know all about your circumstances but we can be your family if you need it. Just take it slow.”

“... Thanks. I will try.”

After that Sophia spent the rest of the day with me doing pretty much nothing.

At night Monica went to my room but for the first time in a long while I was not in the mood. She took matters into her own hands so things don’t go out of control again. She also slept with me. The company was appreciated.

As the morning arrived and we were having breakfast the other maid arrived with the same mage that the elf brought with him.

“I challenge you to a duel!” The mage says to me.

I am not really in the mood to fight right now.

“No thanks.” I answer to him.

“Why? Ain’t your magic the strongest in the kingdom?” He says taunting me.

I am really not in the mood to fight, but I am getting angry at him.

“Sir, please leave.” I say mustering all the strength I have left to other things.

“Coward!” He shouts at me.

Sophia was just a second away of killing this man when I stood up.

“Outside, Near the south gate, give me a few minutes.” I say in a hurry.

“Good, I will show you why Rune Magic is the best!” He says in a snarky tone.

“You don’t need to go.” Sophia says to me.

“No, I need to go. Above all I am a fighter, a soldier. I am not all right but I have to go on.”

“Don’t push yourself, you are just a girl.”

“You don’t know how wrong you are about that.”

She just looks at me confused.

“I will need you there or I will probably kill that man.”

“Not my problem.”

For the first time in my life I saw Sophia ignore the life of someone. A few minutes later I was outside in front of the man.

“So how is this going to work?” I ask.

“We fight. The first one to give up loses.”

“You know you will probably die if we fight, right?” I warn him. This man is a powerful mage but he has no real fighting experience. In a real fight you fight to kill.

“Try your best.” he says smugly.

I just take my position and let him do the first move.

He makes a rune in front of him and shoots arrows of water in my direction.

I stop thinking and act on pure fighting instinct. For now this man is trying to kill me and he will die so I don’t.

I circulate my mana as fast as possible and begin to use multiple spells. First I use electricity to make the signals of my brain faster. For the few seconds this battle will last I will be able to act faster.

I then put a Heat Barrier - Explosive around me and run towards him with Mira in hand.

The barrier stops all the arrows creating explosions that cloud his vision for a moment.

As he tries to start another set of runes I cut his head clean with just one horizontal swing.

He dies a few seconds later and I ignore the body.

As the days go by more people from the institute come to the city trying to fight me. After that they at least try to have a proper duel, but most of them don’t have any real fighting experience so I won every battle so far. They all think I am trying to control magic or some shit as they don’t want to change to my ways of doing magic. I don’t really care and the fighting is the perfect way to test spells.

Little by little I am actually talking with Sophia and Monica as we work on making the city better, sometimes I can talk with the other maid. She still is terrified of me and thinks that if I know her name I will be able to control her now.

The weight of what I learned is still on my mind and will always be there but I can now at least live.

“So… When are you going to stop this?” I ask the Female mage in front of me.

We are outside the city in the same place the first mage died.

“When you lose.” She says seriously.

“You know, I won every duel against everyone who challenged me and the only reason that all of you stay alive is that someone who can actually fight stops things before I have the chance to finish any of you.”

“I am a student of Maxoiliodas, I am not like the others.”

“The last 30 where also students of that crazy elf and I won anyway.”

“No matter, I am probably stronger than them.”

I sigh in disbelief. What kind of crazy place is this institute?

“Hey judge! Prepare a big barrier this time. If what I am going to try works, healing will not be an option.”

The judge, a big green orc, 2.5 meters tall with a staff made of stone just nods to me.

We take our positions and the mage fighting me starts to cast a spell using a rune, it is a big one so I let her do her things.

In the past fights I learned that thunder spells can gain the property of magnets when another mage tried to steal my weapons. In the following days after a series of trial and error I managed to create spells that can give anything hit by the spell a magnetic pull, be it negative or positive.

I throw a Thunder ball at mage but I make sure that it won’t do damage, just make her a big negative magnet.

“Ha, your spell did nothing, my defences are perfect!” She says while still charging a big rune in her hands.

“Well I hope you know how to run.” I shout to her.

I then begin to use my new most powerful spell.

“Sun Blast - Magnet!” I shout, creating a small compressed fireball the size of a small lemon that might as well be a really small sun without all the dangers of having a sun this close to the planet. This spell is also charged with a magnetic positive force so it will go after the mage in front of me.

The small sun starts to pick speed little by little. The mage finally finishes her spell and a serpent made out of water comes from her rune and begins to come towards me and straight into my mini-sun.

The water serpent as soon as it touches my spell becomes steam and leaves the caster speechless.

The judge creates a Energy barrier between my sun and the woman.

“Cancel your spell, now!” he shouts at me with a loud voice.

“You are expecting too much.” I shout back.

Not a moment later my spell touches his shield causing a compressed explosion that sends the mage flying at least a few kilometers to the west. If the barrier wasn’t there to just push her, she would probably be nothing right now.

“Well, that is it for today, I have work to do. If possible stop trying to fight me.” I say to the judge that is preparing to run towards the woman I just defeated.
