Chapter 9: Assassins

Chapter 9: Assassins

Our father looked around to see if he can find some one who made this wall of magic. While he looked around he eventually looked at the tree’s.

When he looked at the tree’s he narrowed his eyes and looked better for a moment. After seeing some one he did not hesitate to yell.

“Assassins!”

I flinched the moment I heard my father’s yell.

Every one seem to flinch at his yell because no one expected something to happen while we are this far from home.

I saw my mother fall to her knees shaking heavily while our father carefully walked closer to our mother. He stands before her still looking at the assassins in the tree’s.

I also looked to the tree’s and I see twenty people, all inside the trees waiting to attack. They are also all wearing a dark green suit with all a mask so that no one could see their faces.

The divisions within the assassins are easy to see. There is one woman in the middle of all the assassins who has a red marking on her forehead.

With that mark she is different from the other assassins.

Looking at the other assassins there are five other assassins with a mark but those marks are in different colours and on their shoulders.

The marks aren’t easy to see but if I look closely enough I can see them clearly enough to pick them out of the rest.

The assassins with the markings on their shoulders all have a small wand with them so I think that those are the archmage’s and the colour of their mark is supposed to show the kind of magic they use.

The rest of the assassins don’t have any marks, so I think that those are just the troop’s that the leader assassin with the red mark just will use.

All the assassins looked at every small movement of us.

I looked closer this time and concentrated my sight on an assassin that looked different from the others.

Looking at him I think I saw it, one of the archmage’s had legs like a goat.

Is that a faun?

I looked over to my family and I saw that my mother still was shaking and that my father is trying to calm her down.

“Honey, please calm down. Think about the children, you don’t want to lose them right?” He tried his best to calm her down while still looking at the assassins not even a single moment letting them out of his sight.

I looked over at Arora and she really looked to enjoy it.

How can she enjoy something like this? I understand it a little bit because nothing happened today and this is the first thing that happened.

It looked that my mother was slowly calming down bit by bit.

When she was calmed down a little bit the eyes of my father are staring wide open into the tree’s. After that he was scanning every tree there was.

I also looked at the tree’s and then I see what he saw. The assassin with the red mark on her forehead is gone. She is nowhere to be seen, I also desperate around scanning everything to look for the assassin that is gone.

After a moment I heard two blades clashing against each other.

I looked over and I saw that my father was holding back the daggers of the assassin.

The daggers of the assassin are red like blood. My father throws the assassin back with his sword and positions himself better in case of another attack.

“Look, I really don’t want to do this either but we really need that boy and your wife. If you can just hand them over I would appreciate it really, I mean it.” The assassin spoke up to my father. Her soft female voice was like magic, it sounded so nice.

The assassin leaned back against a rock while looking at her dagger.

“What do you want from us?” My father asked the assassin.

She looked at my father and just stared at him. “Like I just said we just need the boy and your wife. We really can’t go back empty handed. If you just hand them over no one will get hurt, understand?” her voice became sharper with every word she said.

“Why do you need us?” My father takes a few steps back.

The female assassin sighed. “we really can’t go into the details of our mission, so just cooperate.”

“I won’t give you any of my family! Not my son o-“ She cuts him of.

“Getting angry already? That won’t work on my neither does crying. And we unfortunately can’t say where we are from and who send us here.”

This story originates from a different website. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

She continued. “You know? Just because I can, I will tell you one thing of information. Are you okay with that, mister?”

My father stayed quiet and waited for what she wanted to say.

“My name is Aspen and we are here to take back what is ours, although that is the mission we got from our master, and no one here wants to disappoint the master.”

“What do you mean by taking back what yours?” My father slowly asked her, feeling scared by what can happen any moment.

Aspen sighed and stopped leaning against the rock. When she got away from the rock she turned around and carved the same mark that is on her forehead into the rock.

Then she turned around. “Sorry but small birds must learn to fly.” She exaggeratedly shrugged her shoulders.

What does she mean by that? Small birds must learn to fly, what is het thought behind it?

Every one looked confused by what she just said.

She takes off her mask. “you know, I begin to lose my patients and you are getting onto my nerves.” She said annoyed flicking her dagger.

She looked at us with her two different eye colours, her left eye is green. It’s a green that looks familiar to me, I have seen it many times but I can’t think of what. Her right eye is a beautiful blue, a blue like the ocean. She slowly scanned us before looking back to my father.

My father clenched his sword ready for what to come.

“So I will give you this moment to hand over the two people we need.”

She still stared at my father who didn’t move a single centimetre.

“Honey…” My mother spoke up.

“No! I won’t do it Sophie I won’t lose you or Orvar.” He screamed at my mother without looking back.

Aspen sighed again. “So that where their names again I had already forgotten, good to know that we need Sophie and Orvar.”

“You will stay away from them!” My father snapped.

“uugh.” Aspen turned around. “Should we just do it?” She asked the other assassins with a annoyed tone.

Many of the assassins nodded while the five archmage assassins shake their heads.

It looks like that the archmage assassins know what they are doing and for what they are here.

Aspen turned back around to my father. “ooh and by the way, I am the leader.”

She turned back around to face the other assassins. “come on just say something.”

“you know” She turned back around. “Just fuck it, I also want to have some fun.” She dashed forward with an incredible speed towards my father.

She pushed one of her blood red daggers straight into the direction of my father’s chest.

I saw the mind core of the assassin leader starting to glow as she dashed toward my father.

My father managed to hold his sword horizontally while the dagger came in contact with it. Also when he blocked her attack he slides a bit back from the impact.

He pushes the assassin leader away.

“You are able to give me a little challenge,” She lowered her face a little and a big grin showed up on her face. “It will be fun playing with you.” Aspen challenged my father.

Matthew Artic

“Arora, Orvar! Protect your mother and the luggage!” I commanded them.

Sophie is still shaking on the ground with everything that is happening.

Arora and Orvar moved to their mother and stand ready to protect her.

I push Aspen the assassin leader away with a flick of my sword, it helped that she also jumped away.

“So what is your end goal here?” I asked her.

“It depends on who you ask of us, but mine is definitely the money I will get from this mission. You know, I will get a fortune when we are done with the mission so if everything goes as planned,” She paused for a second, her voice suddenly got darker. “it will be free money. The only problem is that you are standing on the way.”

“So you only care about the money?” I confirmed.

To be sure I guard myself if something unexpected will happen.

She answered with the same dark voice. “Yes, if you think like that then you are right.”

She dashed forward again straight to me. “But to achieve that goal I first need to rid of you.”

I already was prepared for something like this, but I wasn’t prepared for the two other assassins to jump at me.

Okay Matthew when will they be able to hit you? Who will be the first.

I looked at the three enemies before me, the two assassins left and right and not to forget Aspen in the middle.

The one on the right will be the first to be able to hit me then the left one and as last Aspen. If I attack with a slash from right to left I will be able to hit the two normal assassins but not Aspen.

I don’t have another choice, so this is the only option.

I used my fire magic to ignite flame on my sword.

It feels like that the time slows down but I don’t have time to think about that right now.

With my flaming sword I made a slash from the right to the left hitting both the two assassins.

Now the only one that is over is Aspen.

She ducked under my slash and I can’t hit her before she will hit me.

She runs with her body low to the ground ready to stab me in my stomach.

I conjured a fire tornado under Aspen, and I jumped to the side.

Now with her sight blocked and with me out of the way I hold my sword up and strike it down to the direction where aspen will come out of the tornado.

The moment that I predicted she would come out of the tornado; I felt nothing coming from my sword.

Did I miss or did it go so smooth that I didn’t feel anything?

All my senses scream at me to get away from where I was standing.

I turned to the tornado and saw a tip of a dagger coming out from it.

I directly leaned away hoping I was able to dodge the attack fully, but the dagger gave me a small cut on my cheek.

The moment after I got hit by that dagger, Aspen came out of the tornado. She looked me dead in the eyes and attacked me from the left with one of her daggers.

I moved my body so that my back was to her and my sword was in the way of her attack to block it.

I feel her dagger coming against my sword, so I know that I blocked it. I turned so my face was to hers again, killing the blind spot in the process.

I Jumped back so I could reset the flow of this battle.

“You are even better then I thought.” Aspen said with a wicked smile.

She licked the one drop of my blood from her dagger. “This makes me want to kill you even more.”

“Then I want to see it first before I can believe it.” I challenged her.

Orvar Artic

“Arora? Why do I need to take on two of them?”

I asked her while blocking an attack from an assassin.

“I only got one axe and you got the weapon you prefer so that is why you will take on two of them and I one.” She said while chopping off a leg of from an assassin.

“Okay I understand but, you are stronger than me.” I said back to her while avoiding a fire ball.

“So?” Arora asked.

“You are stronger and can do more then that I can that is why.”

She pushed one assassin away from me with her wind magic before standing next to me.

“Okay and how are you getting stronger then?” She asked me holding one brow up.

She sighed. “We can only stay here because of our mother and our father is taking to much space of the road fighting that tree girl.”

I attacked an assassin but he dodged my attack. “We can’t do anything about it though.”

When I looked back at the assassin I only saw an arrow that is to close to my face then that I liked it to be.
