Chapter 28: Sunday Feast

Chapter 28: Sunday Feast

After an emotional morning with Cindy being accepted into "The Holy Church," afternoon came about, and Sunday dinner was being served in the great dining hall inside the church. Hundreds of free, delectable meals were being provided for the hungry churchgoers. The dining hall was just as vast as the worship hall, with the decor and style to match as well. Multiple chandeliers hang from the ceiling of the hall, the room painted all-white throughout, as well as multiple large windows to let the sun shine through on the festive occasion. Cindy sat in the fanciest table she had ever seen, beside her dear friend Elie, and her child Jon. The half-elf gorged on the most delicious steak she ever had, overwhelmed by the flavor and tenderness. It was just a perfect day for Cindy, and nothing could possibly ruin it, as she stuffed herself full beside good company.

"Wow, that was so delicious, I can't eat another bite. I don't remember the last time I ate this much!" Cindy said.

"Yeah, you're telling me!" Jon said. "Maybe church isn't so bad after all," he continued, licking his hands of leftover food.

"Jon, use a napkin for Krist's sake. You're embarrassing me in front of Elie!" Cindy demanded.

"Aw, it's alright, Cindy," Elie said, wiping the boy's mouth with a napkin. "Did you make a lot of new friends at Sunday school, sweetie?" she asked.

"Uh, not really. They're all a bunch of weirdos," the child said. "All they wanna talk about is god or whatever. Miss Cindy's more fun to talk to than any of those other kids... Well, at least she was."

"Watch your tongue, brat," Cindy said, furrowing her brow. "What, am I boring now, just because I've finally found my purpose in life? You should be more supportive of me!"

"I-I didn't mean it like that... I'm sorry," Jon said, lowering his gaze.

"Look, I know the changes I'm going through seem sudden, but I'm serious about devoting my life to God now. I'm sorry if that offends you. I'm sorry if I'm not as 'fun' as I used to be, but this is who I am now!" Cindy proclaimed.

"Yeah, yeah, I get it," Jon murmured, picking at his plate.

"Oh yeah, Elie, my arm got a little dented again. Do you think I could swing by tomorrow for some maintenance?" Cindy asked.

"Hm, can we do Tuesday? I have a date tomorrow!" Elie responded.

What? Not you too!" Cindy muttered, pouting her face. "All my friends are leaving me behind... W-why can't I get a date for once?"

"Oh, your time will come, sweet child!" Elie teased, pinching the half-elf on the cheek. "Like I said, there's plenty of cute guys that go to church here. You wanna go around and mingle, maybe find a match?" she asked.

Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

"U-uh, I've already had enough excitement for one day. No need to ruin it!" Cindy responded. "Maybe next time, though."

"Heh, suit yourself, shy girl!" Elie said.

"By the way, how is the church able to afford all these meals for people every Sunday?" Jon asked.

"Huh, I didn't even think about that. Why are hundreds of people eating delectable, gourmet food for free right now, Elie?" Cindy chimed in.

"Well, tithes and offerings from the wealthy patrons that attend go a long way. Then, there's the Warden, Miss Elanor. She and Pastor Price are pretty close, I hear. I heard she keeps this place running and throws a bunch of money into the church too. Isn't she just the greatest?" Elie explained.

"The Warden funds the church too? Just how much money does this lady have?" Cindy asked.

"Who knows. Apparently, it's a fuck-ton," Elie grinned.

"Hm, does she ever come here?" Cindy asked.

"I've seen her around on occasions. Not recently, though. She's probably busy with the new big restaurant she's opening up soon."

"Oh yeah, Director Amy mentioned something about that. Apparently, we were all invited to the opening ceremony. She's got a big announcement to make, or something."

"Wow, you get to meet the Warden now, too? So lucky!" Elie said.

"Well, I'll see about that," Cindy said. "The directors don't think too highly of her."

"Why not? She's done so much for this city! There was a time we used to all be scared to even walk outside during the day. Ever since Miss Elanor took over, things have been so much better!" Elie said. "Why don't they like her?"

"I guess I'll find out soon enough," Cindy said, eating the last piece of her steak.

After a thrilling sermon and a delicious Sunday dinner, Cindy and Jon parted ways with Elie, and walked home. The sun was still shining brightly as they made their way back, Cindy's spirits lifted heavily, as if she was born anew. The half-elf was smiling and skipping the entire way back. She even stopped and helped a homeless man that was begging on the streets.

"Excuse me, miss. Could you spare some change?" the man asked.

"Hm, I should have a few bucks on me," Cindy said, reaching for her wallet. "Here ya go!" she said, handing the man a five dollar bill.

"Oh my. Thank you so much! Bless your kind soul, miss! Bless you!"

"No problem at all. Have a great day!" the half-elf responded kindly. Her smile grew even brighter as she continued to walk. "I'm such a good person now! Kristianity really has changed me for the better!" she continued.

"You were always good," Jon muttered. "Or, did you forget that you saved me way before you became a Lesus-freak?"

"I still remember," Cindy said with a wry smile. "I-I wish I could forget, but... that's a part of me now. I just have to try my best to walk a more righteous path from now on!"

"Miss Cindy, sorry, but... I don't think your new religious ways align with your job," Jon said.

"Hm? What do you mean?" the half-elf asked, furrowing her brow and straightening her face.

"Well... you're an assassin, after all. You know, you kill people."

"Oh yeah... I'll have to quit then!" Cindy said.

"W-what?"

"I'll quit!" she repeated herself, keeping that heavenly smile on her face.
