two.

One of the teachers signaled for the first table to stand up and form a line to which all the tables begin to do the same. Ever, Jake, and Dalili were towards the end of their line and in front of them Ever could see the first angel to receive their mission.

It was a boy angel named Samuel, he was a cocky little one who thought that he would succeed to great things purely because he had the looks and charm, but to everyone else he was just an annoyance — well maybe not everyone else, but at least to Ever. Although Ever couldn't deny that he was one of the best if not the best looking boy angel she has seen, she wasn't going to be deceived by looks and knew his heart was in the wrong place.

She watched as he was handed an envelope from the Headmaster as she announced, "Congratulations, Samuel. You've made a promise to the angels to fulfill your mission, so please continue to honor that promise. You may step in." her hands motioned toward the black hole and for a slight moment Samuel face shown a tint of fear in his eyes, that maybe no one else caught, but Ever.

Nevertheless, Samuel looked back at every angel in the room, gave them all a smirk and step inside the black hole to which he was instantly pulled in and vanished within a second. If anyone would have blinked in that moment they would have missed him.

This went on for several angels, the Headmaster would congratulate them and say the same sentence about fulfilling their missions and gave them the envelope of their faith and the angels would each disappear into the void. The line was getting considerably shorter and Dalili and Ever were reaching their turn. Ever could feel her stomach twisting and turning as she could now see the Headmaster in such detail now. She watched her graceful moves as she handed the angel their envelope as if she was dancing with every movement she made. It was elegant and enticing. Ever looked back behind Jake and could tell he was freaking out just as much as her, she knew he was scared of failing just like his brother making her heart ached for him.

She grabbed his hand this time which made him look up at her, "You are going to do great things, Jake. I know it. Just promise me you won't let doubt get in your way?"

He nodded as he placed his hands on her waist pulling her into a deep, warm hug.

"Thank you, Ever." He whispered into her ear, squeezing her as if he was afraid she was going to disappear forever.

"You're right, though. I won't fail because I'm promising you a date when we both get back. I'll make sure that I will do everything in my power not to miss it."

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

A smile creeped up on Ever, her heart pounding as she couldn't believe all of this was happening. She would get the guy she has been crushing on since her first year at the Academy to finally ask her out on the same day as they were all about to leave not knowing when they would return — just her luck. Her head was spinning at the amount of thoughts flooding her head and she finally snapped out of her thoughts when she realized it was Dalili's turn to receive her envelope. She let go of Jake, giving her full attention toward Dalili.

"Congratulations, Dalili. Being the top of your class, you will fulfill your promise as an angel, I have no doubt about it." She gave her a glorious smile and handed Dalili her envelope.

"Now please step in and make our Angels proud." She motion Dalili toward the black void.

Dalili gave her a nod and turned toward Ever pulling her in for a tight, short hug. Ever relaxed herself in her arms feeling a tear start to form. She didn't want Dalili to go and secretly wish that they would happen to cross paths in the human world.

Dalili slightly pulled away from her and placed her lips in her ear whispering, "I'll see you soon, Ever. That's a promise."

With that Dalili turned to the black void and entered into the dark circle, disappearing without hesitation. Ever's attention was back on the Headmaster as now it was her turn. The Headmaster's smile seemed a little off compared to the one she gave Dalili, but she brushed it off, blaming it on her nerves.

"Oh, Ever. The oh so beautiful angel that everyone gawks about." Her smile turned into a slight frown, but only Ever could see this slight change and it made her feel on edge.

"Congratulations, Ever on making it this far. Please fulfill your duty as an angel and make us proud. There shall be no fallen angels this year and I'm sure you will not fail us." Ever was caught off guard by her words as she seem to be going off script since everyone else pretty much had the same verbiage, and no one got the fallen angel bit.

She looked up into the Headmaster's eyes and noticed for the first time that her eyes seem to have turned more into a dark purple than from the blue ones she saw earlier. She was transfixed on them and noticed a more menacing smirk spread across the Headmaster's face. Ever felt her heart start to race and she began to feel as if this was all a mistake. That the Headmaster knew something more for Ever's future, but before she could ponder more about this thought the Headmaster handed her the envelope. There was a gold wax sealing with the Academy's symbol on it, Ever held onto it tightly, praying to herself that everything would go smoothly and that her nerves were putting these false ideas in her head — she knew her heart better though.

The Headmaster lifted her hand to signal Ever to step into the void, she looked back at her parents one last time seeing their proud faces as they watch their little angel grow up. Ever thought if her parents weren't scared neither should she be.

She looked into the Headmaster's eyes, "I won't let the angels down."

Her confidence seemed to have frighten the Headmaster a bit as her eyes opened up in surprise. Ever then took a deep breath and stepped into the void of the unknown of the human world.
