***** Vol.5 Chap.34 Retreat *****
Kristin reached her hand into her pocket and played with her white pill again as she sat quietly in her hidden place waiting for the door to open again. Just to confuse the guards, she changed her hiding place. She was determined to take a good number of guards with her.
She quietly waited for some sound from outside the door, but she heard nothing. Eventually, curiosity had overtaken her. She quietly came out of hiding to collect the guns and ammunitions from her assailants. Then she tried to listen for sound from the other side of the door again. When she heard nothing, she decided that they must have fell back to recoup.
Perhaps she could use this time to make her retreat. She took a few guns and all the ammunitions with her and with the fully loaded pistol on her belt; she took a deep breath and opened the door while she stepped aside. She was expecting a barrage of bullets but none came. She stuck her head out and saw no one. This was her chance. She darted out of the room and ran as fast as she could to the outside door.
She remembered the way well and did not took her long to get there. She met no one along the way although she fully expected an ambush to come at any time. But there were none. They must be waiting for her on the other end.
She burst through the backdoor into the cavern. It was dark, but she vaguely remembered the way. She switched on the flashlight occasionally to make sure that she was heading the right way. After falling down a few times and scraping herself on the floor a couple of times, she finally arrived at the narrow passageway.

She threw some sand into the passageway and was pleasantly surprised that the laser beam has been turned off. She quickly flipped herself through to the other side. Just then she heard the back door open and guards shouting. She hid behind the walls of the passageway and watched.
A large searchlight was brought out and a bright light was seen. She thought that there was no way that they could restore the electricity so quickly. But on careful examination, she saw that the searchlight was merely a parabolic dish reflecting the light of many lanterns. She also noticed that the guards really did not venture too far from the door. They merely walked around and searched the place around the back door.
With one last look at the guards, Kristin made her way back to the pick up point. She felt she had done her part. In fact she felt that she did more than her part because she had helped Frank to distract the guards. At last, she got to the pick-up point
“Frank, are you there? I am at the pick-up point.”
There was no answer.
“Frank, are you there? I am at the pick-up point.” She repeated.
There was no answer.
“May-Ling, are you there?”
Again there was no answer.
“Frank, May-Ling, are you guys there?”
There was only silence.
“TEVE, are you there?”
“Yes, are you ready to be picked up at the designated place?”
“Yes.”
“Please wait. I will be there in a few minutes.”
She sat down to wait not knowing where Frank and May-Ling were. She feared the worst for both of them. When the TEVE came, she was ecstatic that she had escaped and was now going back. She stepped inside the TEVE. As the door closed, she asked the TEVE about Frank and May-Ling.
“I am sorry. I have no information about Frank and May-Ling.”
“Was the mission successful?”
“I am sorry, I have no information about that either.”
“Well, get me Elijah.”
“I am sorry. Communication with Elijah was not possible at this time.”
“Okay. Since you cannot give me any information; then please go back as fast as possible.”
“I am sorry that that is not possible either.”
Her jawed dropped.
