***** Vol.5 Chap.32 Confrontation *****
Kristin knew that she had very little time left. He heard the steps of hordes of guards coming down the hallway. She thought for a while. If she backtracked out to the pick up point, she had no confidence that she would make it in time before the guards would have shot her down. If it was not in the hallway, then surely it would be in the cavern.
Even if she made it to the narrow passageway, there was no way she could slide through the gap to the other side without being shot full of holes. She could take the suicide pill. Her hands automatically reached into her pockets and she fondled the pill in her pocket.
No, if I am going to go, I am not going without a good fight. She told herself.
She made up her mind. The guards were really close now. She had but seconds to figure out what she had to do next. Without hesitation, she quietly turned the knob of the door leading into the control room for power generation and opened the door. A lonely guard was sitting in front of the control desk reading the newspaper.
When the door slapped shut, the guard jumped but Kristin was already half way across the room. By the time the guard reached for his gun, Kristin was on top of him with a solid jab to his jaw.
As the guard fell backwards, she grabbed one of the paperweights on the desk and pounded the guard right in the eye. Dazed and partly blinded by the blood oozing out of his eye, the guard tried to fight back but succumbed quickly to the swift and vicious attacks of his assailant. To finish off the job, Kristin pulled his gun and shot him in the head.
Frank saw the whole thing in horror as he flipped between the surveillance camera between the power control room and the lab. He had no idea what to do or what to say to Kristin. But at least he felt he should try.
“Kristin, are you there?”
“I am a little busy here, Frank. Kristin out.”
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
Frank watched the drama unfolding in front of him but felt utterly helpless.
He could not help Kristin. In fact he could not even help himself. He checked the monitor and could not see any activities in the lab yet. He wondered where Mayling was. He dared not risked giving her position away as she was their only hope.
As he panned through the different surveillance camera, he was certain that she had not been found or caught. He was somewhat comforted as he assured himself that she was still making progress. So he turned the monitor back to the power generation control room to see what was happening there.
After disabling the guard, Kristin rushed to the door and bolted it from within. She searched the body, but found nothing useful except for some spare shells for the gun. She took those. Now she had a little time to plan her next move.
She knew that the door would not hold the onslaught of guards, but would only slow them down slightly. She scanned around the room; there were hardly any movable furniture. The control panel was solidly bolted to the floor. The only thing movable was the chair that the guard was sitting on. Other than that, there were wall-to-wall panels of knobs and meters and dials and switches.
Kristin knew enough about electronics to know that the electrical supply to the entire compound was now under her control. She smiled as she thought of different ways to wreak havoc on the people in the compound. She studied the panel carefully
The guards were at the door now. Finding the door locked, they were frantically shouting and yelling and banging on the door. She really could not understand what they were talking, but figured that they must be looking for something to ram the door. Then she heard shots fired at the door.
She looked at the control panel and found the master switch for turning the lights off in her section of the compound. The lights in the room darkened also but only for a moment before the emergency lighting kicked on. One shot to the system and the room fell into darkness.
More cursing came from the other side of the door and she thought she heard a painful cry as one of the guards must be hurt as a stray bullet ricocheted off the door and struck the guard. She reloaded the gun to make sure that she had a full load and kept the others handy.
There were more shots on the door. She knew her time had come. The door burst open and before any guards knew where she was, she emptied her gun into the rushing guards. A number of bodies fell down and some one must have shouted for the door to be closed. The door was quickly closed.
Now she must act quickly. She reloaded her gun. Then she set the generator on a feedback loop that she knew would cause an overload in a short amount of time. At the same time, she disabled the backup system turning the system off instead of leaving the system on standby.
