Vol. 2, Ch. 58 : The Colonel

We walk up to the blanket fort in our disguises.

"So," I start, "we're definitely going to arouse suspicion if we wear masks."

"It'll be fine," Sophia says as she pulls down her hat. "Just keep the hat low, stand straight, and try to fall in line."

"Maybe pray to a god or goddess too," Rose suggests. As one of the only two people who don't have to wear masks, she just has to hide her feminine features.

"Which one?" Cooper straightens his tie.

"…Try all of them," Sophia says, and, with a shrug, she walks forward with a confident step. The blankets part for her, and we all follow.

The space inside is…big. Bigger than the outside. It looks like a castle with the grey walls and staircases. Dozens upon dozens of Nazis march around in formation. The only thing that ruins this image is that everything is till made of blankets.

"Is this Dimensional Magic?" I mutter.

"No," Sophia answers, "this is Spatial. They're just compressing space; not creating a new realm of existence. That would include time-dilation too."

"Can you use Dimensional Magic?"

"No, I use Spatial Magic. Dimensional is several steps above mine. I think Temporal Magic is needed to get it too. Several others as well, but I can't remember them. Dimensional Magic is a top-class affinity. Some people make bags that don't just pack more space inside, but can actually freeze the time for the contents within."

"They're fucking expensive though," Rose comments.

The four of us attempt to march in rank and file like our surroundings. Unsurprisingly, we all fail at it. I have no training in marching, and Rose shuffles way too much. Cooper and Sophia managed something, but Sophia ended up tripping.

The commotion of the trip, combined with the break in monotony of our surroundings brought a lot more attention to us than we would like.

"Vu zere," an important person called out to us. He slowly marches over as everyones' eyes focus on us. He stands in front of us, scanning us over.

Okay, plan time. Umm, if things go to shit, then we're absolutely screwed. We're surrounded by enemies. Our outfits are stolen, and we have no alibi. Sophia and Rose could probably fight their way out and live another day—I don't really know how far their abilities extend.

Cooper and I would probably die.

I glance at Sophia's hands folded behind her back. A small glow of her threads begins forming. Of course! She can just teleport us if things get too out of hand. I forgot about that.

"Come vith me," he says after a prolonged period of time of me being in my thoughts.

We all share a look and follow him. Our bodies tense as we prepare to attack the soldier. Once away from the ants that are the soldiers, isolated, we begin to pounce, but he begins talking.

"Alright. Now zat- Ahem! Argh, how did he do this? Now that we're away from the others, I have to ask. What made you think this was a good idea?!" The Nazi switches from his extreme German accent to something way more American.

"Uhh," I respond to the finger in my face. He calms a little and readjusts himself. What is happening? Is this guy a spy too? A hero? Vigilante? Villain?

"Right. He said introduce myself first," he mutters to himself. Then says, "Hello. Umm, can't really say it's nice to meet you, but I am," he sighs, "Colonel Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg."

We all stare at him with blank stares. I don't think any of us know who this guy is and he understands that with his eyebrow rubbing.

"Heh. Anyway, I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to be, uhh, resurrected? I enjoy it, immensely, mind you, but I don't understand why. I mean, I got my eye and hand back, and am still alive after my execution, but…" He gestures to himself in confusion.

"Wait… Were you a revolutionary?" Sophia's question. It feels like I'm missing something. But what? A revolutionary—someone involved in causing a dramatic change in structure. He's a Colonel, so he has considerable weight, but he's a Nazi.

Wait.

Is he the hero of the movie that Sophia, Thomas, and Major Inconvenience mentioned? Then he really shouldn't be here. I mean, Doctor Graves would probably resurrect him anyway, but the others would probably kill him again, so why?

Unless…they don't remember. The Remnants don't have free will. That with probable memory loss equals a shaky position. But Doctor Graves would surely ask the ones he brought back if somebody was going to be an issue, right? He isn't that much of an idiot.

Okay, that might be overestimating the man. He is in debt.

If these guys have a protocol that Major mentioned, and Graves brought back some problematic people, then they could cause issues anyway.

Sophia and Rose have been interrogating the man, but I have to interrupt them; I have a question. "Why do you have a better accent than the others?" The others stop and contemplate for a second before turning to Claus whom has a shit-eating grin on his face.

"I was going to lead you to the others, but I needed to placate you before you mauled me. I'm still a revolutionary, but I can still tell what, or who, is a threat, and I value my life. Well, undead life. Ugh, still strange—using this System."

"Others?" Rose pulls out a sword from Ruler-knows-where, and aims it at the Colonel.

Claus leads us to a kinda-hidden backroom. A few others are in there, but they aren't Nazis.

"These are the people that the Graves fellow brought back before me. They're also of similar mind to me." Claus gestures to the others, and they stand up.

A fairly familiar man walks up to me. He's at a similar height to me, but a few details about his appearance confirms something.

"Hello, President Abraham Lincoln." He smiles in response. Not only is this man a president of the United States, but I believe I met him back in the slums. All the way back in my first visit.
