Vol. 2, Ch. 35 : Relaxing Sunday

It's Sunday. A day of worship for some, rest for others, but for me it's laundry day. Normally, I would do this on Saturday, but I was busy becoming acquainted with Rose's extremely friendly dad, who, by the way, can make extremely good burgers.

Now, I'm not religious by any means. I mean, even after learning the existence of several gods, goddesses, and even those above, I still don't really care for it. I'm completely fine with living in the now and dealing with death when I'm dead. Plus, religion loses a lot of purpose when you already know what's going to happen afterwords.

Though if I had to place faith in these beings that dictate the world, then I would go with the Rulers.

I pile all of my dirty clothes into a basket. A noticeable article is missing though, specifically, my hero outfit. All that was left in its place is a note that read, 'I think it's time I give you some armor that can merge with the System. I'll return it later. - Thomas'

So, I guess he'll upgrade my armor? Not really sure what that means, but I can assume that it won't just protect me physically, but can probably influence my Status as well. Maybe skills? I wonder if there's a skill that can tell me information about an object.

Maybe technology? I may be ignorant, but I still know what the most famous scientist and inventor of our time did to earn his title. I took my history class, though I admit I slept through some of it, and basically he invented magical technology, or magi-tech. Technology that can use mana in their functions, not to be confused with magically resistant technology, which occurred back when this planet became covered in mana and technology kept breaking down. Thomas's existence is really important in the world's history.

He also made various other discoveries, too many to mention, and now he is working on my hero outfit.

I still can't wrap my head around how he's a villain though. He mentioned that he does vigilante things, but most of his sightings were destructive. Unless…that wasn't him?

That's a thought for the future though. So what to do today? Perhaps just go for a walk in the city, and maybe get into some trouble because Murphy seems to be having a field day with me lately. Maybe a little slice of nature in Central Park could do me some good.

A quick, and thankfully uneventful, train ride later with all of its usual strangeness reminiscent of a New York subway station behind me, and I quickly walk into the allotted area within the city for a scenic image of serenity. Just…ignore the smell coming from the subway.

A horse carriage passes by with a centaur riding in the carriage itself. I…don't want to think about the implications of such an event, but I'll just ignore it.

The sounds of cheering grasps my attention as I look over to see an old lady dressed in autumn colors and a dress made out of straw that goes to her feet. Her straw hat has a sunflower coiling around the brim and I can smell syrup and bacon wafting over here.

It's a famous entertainer slash chef in the city known for her magic tricks and free food, Breakfast Betty. She's not a hero, villain, or adventurer, but she just uses magic to do tricks in public areas, specifically tricks with food. Like right now she's creating intertwining beams of syrup and milk form a twister above her hands.

Kinda amazing how she can use two different magics at the same time.

She moves the twisters onto one hand and they come closer and closer together until they form one beam and instead of splattering everywhere the milk almost seems to gain the properties of the syrup and a slight color change too.

Kinda almost as if she's using two different mana types at the same time, but isn't fusing them.

Wait! That is what she's doing isn't it! Oh, so that's what Thomas meant when he mentioned moving more than one type of mana around. When they're on different parts of the body she can use two different spells, but when they're near each other one can be cast while the other mana can affect the properties of the other.

So, the milk is being cast into the air, but gains some properties of syrup. If I had fire and water, I would probably attempt to fuse the two into, probably, steam, but if I use this method I could probably create a ball of boiling water.

Man, I should work on my critical thinking skills, but this has so many more opportunities. Does it just stop at two? There are probably combinations that don't work well either, like earth and healing, but water and healing could probably create a medicine of some kind.

Let's see, I have earth, water, radiation, and non-elemental. I should probably try to get some more, but let's work with what we have first.

I should probably do my first non-enhancement spell with intent magic, mainly due to my lack of knowledge over chants or runes, so my best option would be to imagine a new effect.

I coerce water mana towards the palm of my right hand. I try to imagine a ball of water. Floating slightly off my hand, defying gravity but still in my control. Maintaining a perfect spherical shape, a diameter of three inches. It swirls about in place due to it attempting to fit into the surrounding area, but is held in place by sheer willpower.

With the image clear in my head, I force the mana out of my hand outstretched into the air. Water appears out of nowhere and coagulates into a ball shape in front of me. It fits my specifications perfectly. I shift my hand around to see the ball float perfectly around my palm, even when my hand is upside down.

I dispel my magic controlling the ball, and it promptly falls under the forces of gravity. It lands with a splash and visibly evaporates. I release a breath I hadn't been aware I was holding. I guess that took more out of me than I thought with the deep breaths I'm taking, but I got a new notification.

If it's drinkable then why does it evaporate so quickly? Do I need to actively keep the spell active, do I just need to drink it, or do I need a higher skill rank? A few more summons shows that I cannot keep the water with just willpower. I can exhibit a little control over the water once I dispel the mana, but it's hard. Like lifting a featureless concrete wall. Sophia makes this look so easy.

No wait. She still controls it while connected to her body.

Anyway, when I drink the water, it stays in my mouth. So, drinking fine. Though I think I can probably have it stay longer with a higher rank.

Now, from Thomas's lesson, combining earth and water should make life, though I don't have them at the rank to do so, but if I try to make an earth ball it should be pretty easy to do with just earth mana, but what about mud? It should be possible, Thomas mentioned that the base manas can simulate all effects, but it just gets more difficult with more precision.

Now let's try an earth ball with water mana coercing the earth mana.

With a similar image to the water ball, but with thicker mud at a higher viscosity, it's pretty hard to make with just earth. It try to force water out at the same time, but that doesn't feel right either. Maybe try to push out the earth mana with the water mana? Just have to focus on not combining, not that I could do that anyway.

This is much easier as a new ball formed of mud forms similarly to the water ball.

Neat.
