Glancing at the System Notifications, I start to taste metal on my tongue and realize what I just did.
Widening my eyes, I look at Emma. "Oh my God! I'm sorry!" What should I do? She's bleeding! While I'm panicking, I fail to notice Emma reaching into her pocket and pull out a roll of bandages and start wrapping her arm. It wasn't until she grabs my shoulder that I notice the smile on her face.
"I gotta say, I didn't expect you to bite me and I also didn't expect it to hurt. But, it's fine accidents happen and if you're strong enough to harm me zhen you'll be alright. I can tell you're an amateur but you'll go far. I can tell. Now, you can go back to see Robert and he'll give you your Guild Card."
"Who's Robert?"
"He's zhe person you met at zhe desk."
"Oh, that's his name?"
"Yeah, he usually stays in zhe background."
Moving back to the front desk, Emma parts from me and I sit back down in front of Robert. He glances at me and reaches under his desk for something. Then he hands me a card with my photo on it. Somehow, they got a photo of me with my updated physical features on it.
"So that is your Guild card, it also serves as a City I.D., you are going to start at Rank F and you will need to do 30 F rank jobs, 10 E rank jobs to rank up, or just get to level 10. For any rank up a test of some kind will be administered to you. Really, the test is randomized so we don't know what you will get. The card also gives you permission to enter Dungeons but we recommend you start with the one under the building as it is a very weak dungeon. The card keeps track of all monsters that you kill. You can then bring the card to the exchange offices for money. Said offices also contain values for subjugation."
After I admire my new identification card, Robert drops a 4-inch thick book on the desk.
Royal Road is the home of this novel. Visit there to read the original and support the author.
"This waste of paper is the Code and Conduct manual that all guilds use."
"T-This is huge! It's like War and Peace. Do I really need to read all of this?" I asked.
"To skip all the legal jargon, as long as you have common sense and don't interfere with guild business you'll be fine. That is all you may go."
After he said that I went up and left the building heading for my apartment. While walking through the streets my phone starts to buzz.
Maddy: Hey Ally, I found an army surplus store.
Ally: Why army surplus?
Maddy: I don't want you to die, so you'll need some weapons and armor.
Maddy: Now, you'll need a knife because I know you are a poor shot and don't have a license anyway.
Ally: You know that's right.
Maddy: And of course some tough clothing. Now I am not saying get a bulletproof vest but something that can survive getting scratched.
Ally: Alright, where is it?
Maddy: I'll send you the location.
Walking to where the address stated, I was lead to a a dark, dank alley.
'…This is suspicious as fuck.'
After disregarding that voice in my head that tells me to do reasonable things, I slowly walking into the alley. After moving for about 12 seconds my Enhanced Senses start kicking in, other than the smell of garbage I also start to smell something sulfuric. When my phone tells me that I've arrived, I look to the right and see a door and sign that says, "Gilbert's Guns". I open the door slowly because I value my life a tiny bit and peek through.
"Hey, are you going to come in or what?!"
"U-Umm, yes." I stutter.
Looking before me I see a hoary man who may go to the gym everyday and has a habit of snorting protein powder for every meal. In other words, he is ripped and it was at this moment I questioned my sexuality because to other women he would emit an overwhelming masculine feeling but I just felt numb and intimidated. Perhaps he just isn't my type.
"Do you need something?" He said, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Oh, a knife and some reinforced clothing."
"I'll start with the knife. What kind?"
"Something strong enough for a Rank F dungeon."
"Oh, an adventurer. Quite pleasant to make your acquaintance." He said with his voice becoming an octave lower.
"Is there something wrong?"
"Not much, it is just that a lot of my army buddies leave the military just to die as an adventurer."
"My condolences."
"Not your fault." His voice then goes back to normal. "Anyway, back to your knife. I have a stainless steel knife here that is usually used for hunting. Now, this is the best option I have for you that is actually in stock."
"Okay and my clothes?"
"To what point do you need reinforcement?"
"Something tough enough to resist scratches."
"So scratches huh. I have leather or corduroy, based on your preference."
"Which costs more?
"Leather is about $800 and the corduroy is about $240 but leather will last longer if you take care of it."
"I'll take the corduroy and that's it."
"Alright then, I'll need to see your I.D."
After I showed him my I.D. he starts putting my items into bags.
"Your total comes out to $420.78."
I let a small whimper escape and pull out my wallet.
