1995

Daryl wore 'Necklace' an advanced AI that helped him through his time travel discovery.

He was at a cemetery late at night.

"These are the correct coordinates, Daryl. It should be 10 meters deep."

"Perfect, this will prove it worked!"

Daryl dug with a shovel and pulled it up. "If this is the same, it'll show that I can send anything back in time." He opened the box. "Success!"

"Yes, but Daryl, that doesn't necessarily mean …"

"Mean what, Necklace? Of course, it means I was able to send the box back in time."

"But precisely when, Daryl?"

"A few decades ago."

"We should carbon-date it, Daryl."

"There's no time for that. It's my turn to go. The fate of our current future is grim."

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

"But to what end, Daryl? You can never return to the present, at least artificially."

"Necklace, with your knowledge base, I plan on beginning at the moment of the feasible Internet. I'll be the inventor of great things like wikis, social media, data storage, and apps developed in the financial and industrial sectors. You name it. And most importantly, I'll spearhead the concept of Internet search! I'll be the world's first trillionaire in no time. And I'll make things right. You'll be my sports almanac!"

"Ah, I see. Very funny. A reference to a sci-fi time travel movie."

"Yes." Daryl smiled.

Daryl set the machine to 1995 and materialized with Necklace at a small shopping mall.

"Radio Shack! Perfect. I'll buy a computer here."

"Daryl, wait, look at the parking …"

He shushed Necklace with his hand and entered the store.

A salesman with a ponytail, beard, and thick sideburns, wearing a plaid suit and tie, said, "Hey man, what's up?"

"I'm interested in a …."

Necklace whispered, "Personal computer, Pentium, the latest model with ethernet."

Daryl repeated Necklace's words.

"Sorry, man." The salesman shook his head. "That all sounds far out. I'm not familiar with that, but we just got the newly launched TRS-80!"

"I tried to warn you, Daryl," whispered Necklace.

Daryl gasped while staring at the computer and said, "Forget the Internet, Necklace. You and I will own this entire industry!"
