Amy stifled a scream as she was overtaken by the swarm. She was pulled rapidly through the cosmos as space itself seems to stretch and bend around her. She found herself alone on a glass platform surrounded by colorful galaxies and nebulae. She collapsed to her knees, feeling woozy.
In the distance floated another platform, this one holding a set of massive scales. Between them stood a woman in an elegant dress, her head that of a cow. Ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor, Amy realized.
"Come, child." Hathor beckoned her forward. Amy hesitantly stepped onto a glass walkway that manifested before her feet. As she approached the goddess, the scales began to glow.
"Your heart holds both light and darkness," Hathor pronounced. "But your scales remain balanced."
Behind her shimmered the entrance to a stone doorway covered in hieroglyphs. With growing unease Amy stepped through. After a flash she found herself standing before a circle of massive crystal shards, each one showing events from her past.
A towering woman with feathers covering her body greeted Amy. "I am Ma'at, goddess of harmony. Your memories shall reveal the truth within."
The first crystal shone, plunging Amy back into her childhood bedroom. She watched her younger self hiding under the covers during a thunderstorm, terrified and alone.
"Why do you still carry this fear?" Ma'at asked gently. Amy felt the goddess's light touch, soothing her racing heart. "As a child you believed the storms would harm you, but see how they pass without lasting pain?"
The next crystal took Amy back to high school and the bitter heartbreak of her first love. She viewed her teenage self crying desperately into a pillow.
Ma'at enveloped her in warmth and understanding. "The sorrow you felt was real, but it did not break you. Your heart still knows how to love without fear of loss."
One by one Amy faced difficult moments from her past - death of loved ones, failures and rejections. With Ma'at's guidance she found insight and was finally able to let go of the anger and pain that had weighed her down for so long.
A final flash brought Amy into a chamber filled with hundreds of versions of herself. At its center floated a fractured obelisk engraved with the faces of her soul's past lives.
Ma'at guided Amy through melding with each aspect of her spirit until she stood whole before the reconstructed obelisk. "You have achieved unity within your Ka. Now your journey continues."
Amy took a deep breath as she stepped through the doorway into the final chamber. Before her stretched an endless starfield, galaxies and nebulae swirling in the darkness. At the chamber's center floated an enormous set of scales, each plate large enough to hold a galaxy.
Hathor appeared beside Amy, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "The final test will measure your soul itself to determine if you are worthy to proceed."
Amy shivered. "What must I do?"
"Simply step onto the scales. If your heart remains free of corruption, they will hold you aloft."
Hesitantly, Amy climbed onto one massive plate. As it began tipping under her weight, she had to fight down panic. Just as she felt herself slipping, the plate stabilized, hovering in perfect balance.
Across from her, a shimmering portal opened. From it emerged a shadowy figure that floated onto the opposite plate. As it settled, both plates remained steady, neither dipping from the added weight.
Amy stared at the silhouette, realizing it was a mirrored version of herself, except with eyes glowing red. Her doppelganger smiled coldly.
"To proceed, you must outweigh the darkness that lives within all mortal souls," Hathor intoned. As Amy watched in horror, her double began growing, its shape morphing into a hideous demonic visage. Massive wings unfurled as the creature's weight caused the scales to sink rapidly.
Amy felt herself rising higher even as her reflection sank below her. "I don't understand - if that's my own inner darkness, how can I outweigh it?"
"You cannot fight it directly and hope to win," Hathor advised. "Instead, increase your own light to counter the shadows."
Closing her eyes, Amy searched within herself, remembering Ma'at's guidance about overcoming past pains. As she released each negative memory, she felt lighter, as though dissolving back into starlight.
When she opened her eyes, Amy saw the scales shifting back toward balance. Her monstrous twin had stopped growing, though it thrashed angrily against the invisible bonds holding it in place.
"Very good," Hathor praised. "Your light now equals your darkness. Few mortals can achieve such perfect balance."
Amy shook her head. "It's not enough. To defeat my own inner demon, I have to be better than this."
She recalled Calvin's unbreakable will and selfless courage. Drawing on his example, she sent waves of compassion toward the shrieking creature across from her. To her astonishment, its writhing form began shrinking back to human size.
"Outstanding!" Hathor cried joyously. "By transcending fear and anger, you have mastered your own soul. None who reach such spiritual heights can walk the path of darkness."
As Amy watched, her doppelganger evaporated into smoke, leaving her alone on the balanced scales. A walkway manifested leading toward a portal glowing with warm, welcoming light.

"Go in peace, noble warrior," Hathor blessed her. "Your true quest awaits."
A bright flash enveloped her, piercing through her very essence. Soon, she found herself on the same grassy hillside as Calvin.
"Welcome, traveler. We await just one more." Baldur said.
----------------------------------------
As Calvin faced the resurrected Pharaoh, Freya suddenly found herself enveloped in a strange, silver mist. In an instant, the chamber and her companions winked out of existence. She felt weightless, suspended in the shimmering fog. Then solid ground reappeared under her paws and the mist dissipated.
Freya stood in an endless field dotted with massive, ancient oak trees. Their leaves shone like emeralds under the warm sunlight. Gentle hills rolled under the cloudless blue sky. In the distance, snow-capped mountains pierced the horizon.
Freya sniffed the sweet floral scents wafting on the breeze. Birdsongs and bubbling brooks filled the serene air. She trotted through the tall grass, taking in the beauty surrounding her. Then she spotted a figure standing beneath a towering oak.
It was an elderly man in a long white robe, leaning on a gnarled staff. His hair and beard were pure white and his wrinkled face held a peaceful smile. As Freya approached, she sensed wisdom and kindness radiating from him like heat from a campfire.
"Welcome, Freya," he said, his voice gentle yet resonant. "I am Oberon, keeper of this realm between worlds. Your companions face trials of their own. Now you must undergo tests of character to proceed on your quest."
He waved his staff and the oak tree transformed into an archway of woven branches. Golden light shone from within.
"Enter the Gauntlet of the Ancients," Oberon intoned. "Face your deepest fears and emerge whole."
Freya steeled herself and stepped through the portal. She emerged into a stone arena surrounded by mist. Spectral figures hovered in the stands - ancestors of her Aetherwolf bloodline. The snarl of a beast echoed from the gloom.
A massive dire wolf stalked out, fur bristling, fangs bared. Freya crouched, growling. The wolf pounced with lightning speed. Freya spun and slashed with her claws, barely dodging the snapping jaws. They clashed again and again, wolf against wolf, fang and fur flying.
As they fought, Freya realized this was no ordinary beast. It moved with unnatural quickness, anticipating her every attack. She could find no weakness or opening. Then she saw - this was her own ferocity given form. To win, she must conquer the savagery in her blood.
Freya cleared her mind and stood calmly facing the snarling wolf. When it charged, she sidestepped smoothly, allowing its momentum to carry it stumbling past. As it scrambled to its feet, Freya gazed into its hate-filled eyes. Then she bowed her head in respect. The wolf froze, bewildered. It bowed back hesitantly.
As Freya raised her eyes, the dire wolf vanished. The figures in the stands nodded in approval. A portal opened to another realm. Freya boldly stepped through.
She found herself on a narrow stone bridge spanning a yawning chasm. Far below, a river of molten lava snaked between sheer cliffs. The bridge was old, cracked and crumbling. As Freya inched along, a tiny figure darted out from a crevice.
It was a small ginger kitten, mewling piteously. It tottered on the edge, then tumbled over with a faint cry. Without thinking, Freya leapt after it, claws outstretched. The kitten landed on her back and Freya dug her claws into the sheer rock wall, halting their fall.
Muscles burning, Freya painfully climbed back up the bridge, the kitten clinging desperately to her fur. She collapsed on solid ground and the grateful kitten licked her nose. Its eyes held wisdom belying its size. Then it vanished in a puff of sparks.
The bridge repaired itself. As Freya crossed, the chasm transformed into a crystal cave glowing with ethereal light. She entered a round chamber with a shimmering mirror pool. As Freya peered closer, her reflection transformed - into a husky puppy.
Freya was startled. The husky stared back with sad eyes, trapped beneath the surface. Freya pawed the water in confusion. Ripples spread and her reflection returned to normal. But the sorrowful puppy haunted Freya's mind.
"You cannot proceed with a divided spirit," a voice echoed. Freya whirled to see Oberon entering behind her. "The reflection you see is the soul of your previous self, now bound to and at war with your Aetherwolf form."
Freya gazed at her reflection, understanding dawning. She touched the pool with her paw. The surface solidified into ice. Then Freya raised up on her hind legs and slammed her front paws down. The ice shattered. Her reflection emerged once more as the husky, barking joyfully. She nuzzled Freya, then disappeared in a glow of light.
Oberon nodded. "Well done. You have tamed your inner beasts and restored balance. It is time for the final test - the Weight of the Soul."
A shimmering gateway opened. Beyond lay an ornate chamber with a huge set of scales. The left plate held a glowing white feather. The right plate was empty.
Freya padded into the grand chamber, her claws clicking on the polished stone floor. Oberon gestured to the mammoth scales before them.
"Here your spirit will be weighed and judged if you are worthy to proceed."
He waved his staff. A glowing orb emerged from Freya's chest, containing a shimmering mist - her soul essence. It floated onto the right plate of the cosmic scale. For a moment, the plates balanced perfectly. Then the feathered plate dipped lower.
Oberon frowned. "Your soul bears a burden still..."
Suddenly, spectral beasts appeared around them - the dire wolf, a lava monster, the ginger kitten. One by one they marched onto Freya's plate, adding their spiritual weight. The plates shifted back and forth, nearly even.
With a mighty leap, the ginger kitten jumped onto the feather's plate. The cosmic scale slammed into balance. Oberon smiled.
"Well done, noble Freya. You have proven your courage and compassion. Your soul has found harmony between savagery and morality, chaos and order."
He waved his staff. The stone floor ruptured. A crystalline staircase spiraled up through glittering caverns filled with shimmering pools of light.
"Go now and rejoin your companions," Oberon proclaimed.
A brief moment later she smelled the familiar smells of her packmates as she felt her bond with Calvin return once more. She bounded over to him and tackled him to the grass. Nealy a gallon of slobber later, her embrace with Calvin ended and she released him from her clutches.
"Nice to see you too girl. How was your trip?"
Freya yipped.
Calvin glanced around at the lush meadows and forests surrounding them, very different from the Egyptian ruins they had just left. Amy stood nearby, looking confused.
"Where are we?" Amy asked. "This definitely isn't the pyramid dungeon anymore."
"You have passed from the mortal realm into the eternal city of the Aesir. Welcome to Asgard. Not all who begin the journey you've been on, complete it."
"Those who prove themselves before the gods may stay as honored guests, perhaps even join our ranks in time. But the tests ahead are perilous - designed to break minds, spirits, and bodies. If you fail or turn back, your memory of this place will vanish when you return to Midgard."
Amy and Calvin exchanged glances. The splendor around them was enticing.
"Baldur, how did we come here?" Calvin asked. "We were battling undead in an Egyptian tomb when we suddenly found ourselves in your realm."
Baldur smiled. "The mortal world and Asgard intersect at certain points - sites of tremendous magical power or historical importance. The pyramid where Odin tested the pharaohs of old contains a permanent gate between realms for worthy travelers. You three passed through by demonstrating courage, integrity, and wisdom."
He turned to lead them towards an immense, golden hall rising in the distance.
"Now you must prove your mettle to the Allfather himself. Those deemed worthy will feast in the halls of Valhalla and train to stand against Ragnarok!"
Calvin felt Amy slip her hand into his as they followed Baldur towards their next test. He gave her fingers a supportive squeeze. After facing corrupt gods and monstrous beasts, how much worse could the ruler of Norse heaven and earth be?
