Chapter 9: Med School

The night before they had set out, Marshall had some things he needed to test out. First, was his Field Dress skill.

Field Dress: Infuse fabric with bio-attuned nanites turning them into combat consumable bandages that restore HP and heal physical wounds. The effectiveness of the bandages is determined by the quality of the cloth infused. This skill can only be used out of combat and can require a significant amount of MP.

The group discussed this skill in length while planning how they would synergize with each other. This was likely going to be huge for them. They provided some strips of ratty cloth torn from their ruined clothes and a few strips of water bear hide. Marshall wasn’t sure if that would be considered ‘fabric’ but hey….that’s what experimentation is all about right?

He’d washed the cloth down in the water nearby trying to free them of the stories etched into them from their past battles….mostly those stories were bug goo, blood, sweat, dirt, and all sorts of other questionable contaminants that certainly wouldn’t make for a good bandage. Obviously, back home, Marshall would never consider using something like this to cover a wound. But, he didn’t really have an autoclave and nanites had to be at least as good right?

Picking up a torn strip of cloth from his small pile, he focused on Field Dress. A silver mist formed in his hand, undulating as if it were somehow alive. Thinking about it…it probably was considered ‘alive’. At least, if these were the nanites they’d heard so much about.

The mist stretched out from his hand and enveloped the cloth, obscuring it entirely from view for several seconds. When the mist cleared, Marshall was surprised at what he saw. Where once, there was a ratty torn strip of cloth sat three nicely rolled bandages.

Cloth Bandage (Inferior) x3: These nanite-infused bandages were created from a substandard material. They can be applied to a bleeding wound to help slow but not stop the bleeding. Slows HP drain from bleeding wounds when applied.

Not bad at all. Marshall thought. He was most certainly proud of his hard work.

Marshall took a moment to check his stats. Field Dress consumed approximately 10% of his MP. This was the other aspect to his experiment. He wanted to see how much these would cost him in the MP department, and how quickly he could recover.

Moving on, he picked up a strip of the water bear hide and channeled Field Dress again.

If Marshall was proud of his results before, he was absolutely elated now.

Leather Bandage (Inferior) x3: These nanite-infused bandages were created from a low-quality, sufficient material. They can be applied to a bleeding wound to help stop the bleeding. They can also be used to help stabilize broken bones. Stops HP drain from bleeding wounds and restores a small amount of HP when applied.

Another quick check of his MP showed that the leather bandages consumed more mana to create. Roughly 20% this time. Worth it he thought. The leather bandages just sounded far better in practice.

He had enough MP to make nine more leather bandages and another set of cloth bandages before he was tapped out. He gathered them all up and strolled back over to the group which was still in deep discussion.

“Hope you all have insurance.” He said, passing out bandages to each of them. “The descriptions are a bit vague. But hell, I figure it won’t be long before we bumble our way into another shit show and get a chance to experiment with them.” He said half-jokingly. It would have been more funny if the punchline didn’t include pain and the possibility of their brutal death.

In a majority of their encounters, Calvin had walked out with bleeding wounds of one form or another. He was covered in all manner of wounds in various stages of the healing process. Marshall marveled at the fact that he hadn’t suffered from any infections yet, but they chalked this all up to either nanite mumbo jumbo or their increased stats. Either way, Calvin was damn lucky as far as he was concerned.

Marshall wouldn’t be able to test any of his other skills right now.

SKILLS OBTAINED

Double Tap: Fire two nanite-attuned rounds dealing additional critical strike damage when striking a weak point.

Nanomist Surge: Release a bio-attuned nanite mist to envelop a single party member, significantly healing them over a long duration.

Field Surgery: Create a short-lived surgery drone, healing the most critically wounded ally to full health. While in combat this skill requires a 25-second channeling period. At base evolution, this skill can only be used once per 24 hours.

Field Dress: Infuse fabric with bio-attuned nanites turning them into bandages that restore health and heal wounds. The effectiveness of the bandages is determined by the quality of the cloth infused. This can only be used out of combat and requires a significant amount of MP.

Medic's Intuition: Marshall gains increased awareness of allies' health levels, highlighting critically injured players and granting bonus action speed when healing them.

He sadly didn’t have a gun…a shortcoming he hoped to address shortly. Until then Double Tap was likely entirely useless. He briefly entertained the thought of throwing one Javelin and having two strike the target…but that’s absurd. Right? There’s no way the nanofuckery goes that far is there?

His other skills required someone to be injured. As much as he hated the thought of waiting for one of his friends to get hurt to test out his skills…it was pretty much an inevitability at this point. Although…

“Hey Cal. I was just thinking about my skills and testing them out further. Do you think my Nanomist Surge skill might help fix whatever’s going on with that beard of yours?” he winked over at Calvin, who feigned suffering a terrible wound.
