The final days of the tutorial were upon them. Olympus was abuzz with activity as the city prepared for their imminent return to Earth. Nanites worked tirelessly erecting buildings, while soldiers patrolled the streets and manned the walls. The once fledgling settlement had grown into a thriving city-state under Calvin's leadership.
Within the newly acquired settlements, similar efforts were underway. Durk oversaw the refortifying of Icewatch, transforming the remote outpost into a key defensive position. Sturdy barricades were erected around the perimeter, anchored by powerful sentry turrets designed by Seth. At the settlement's heart, a barracks and armory were built to house and equip the soldiers stationed there. Though Icewatch would remain an isolated garrison, it now had the means to withstand an assault.
Ulrich coordinated improvements back at the settlement of the Cliff Dwellers. The rocky cliffs and mud-brick dwellings were natural fortifications, but more permanent structures were needed. The nanites were hard at work here too, constructing new stone buildings along the base of the cliffs. These included barracks, a mess hall, an infirmary, and hardened shelters dug into the cliffside. Ulrich also had a defensive wall built along the cliffs' edge, patrolled by sentries and Seth's spider drones.
While the settlements were reinforced, Olympus itself expanded rapidly. Small farms were erected within the borders supporting all manner of agricultural endeavors from food production to herbs and other resources for the artisans of Olympus. At the town's heart, near the lake sat the magnificent Hall of the Aegis and the bustling central plaza.
Calvin stood upon the balcony of the Hall surveying the progress. All around him, Olympus was growing at an astounding rate. Soldiers drilled in tight formations under their captains' watchful eyes. Despite the looming deadline, spirits were high.
Leaving the Hall, Calvin walked the busy streets. Citizens smiled and waved, calling out greetings to their leader. Calvin stopped to speak with many along the way, asking after their families and assuring them of Olympus's strength. At the central plaza, a thriving marketplace had taken root. Citizens moved about with purpose while children laughed and played around the central fountain.
On the outer borders of Olympus, another key project was underway. Guided by Asher, efforts were underway to revive the inert dungeon core. The core hovered above a dais, pulsating weakly with purple light as Asher channeled various essences into it. After each attempt, he reviewed the results and made adjustments. By the end of the day, flickers of life had returned to the core.
When Calvin arrived, Asher was beaming with excitement. "It's working!" he exclaimed. "At this rate, the core will be fully operational by tomorrow."
Calvin congratulated Asher on his progress and left him to continue the delicate work.
With Olympus developing rapidly, Tank's scouting teams were also busy. Several groups had been dispatched through portals to follow up on the scattered human signatures detected by Seth's drones. Most found only empty camps or signs of deadly struggles with beasts. But some tracked survivors back to remote encampments.
In total, over a hundred more humans were located and brought back to Olympus in the final days. Many told harrowing tales of their fights for survival before the scouts found them. All were grateful for the refuge Olympus provided. They marveled at the bustling city as they were led through the streets to housing and offered food and medical aid.
Despite these successes, Calvin remained concerned about those still lost in the wilderness. But there was only so much that could be done before time ran out. The tutorial's end was imminent. For now, Calvin took solace in the fact they had reunited many fractured groups and gained new allies. Together, they were now far stronger than before.
On the eve of the final day, Calvin gathered his companions on the balcony of the Hall. Andy had asked them all to come together for some final preparations.
The sun was setting now, bathing Olympus in a warm golden light. Andy's appeared before them.
"As the tutorial comes to a close, I have been instructed to give you some more context about what you will be facing." Andy began.
Andy raised his hands, and Calvin's vision swirled as a brilliant nebula enveloped them. They appeared to float disembodied among the stars. Before them stretched entire galaxies - shimmering islands of light and color.
"For over a billion years, the Aetherians nurtured fledgling civilizations," Andy narrated. Visions of strange alien worlds flashed by. Calvin saw domed cities housing insectoid creatures. An ocean planet teaming with serpentine lifeforms. A gas giant where winged humanoids soared between sky cities.
"They sought out worlds with potential and accelerated their advancement. They fostered the growth of individual cultures, cultivation of knowledge, and innovation" Now a fleet of sleek silver ships appeared. Calvin watched in awe as they terraformed barren planets, seeded new atmospheres, and constructed megastructures around stars.
"When necessary, they also acted as protectors." The scene shifted. A sinister black armada emerged from a swirling vortex. The Aetherian ships moved to intercept them. What followed was a battle of immeasurable scale. Blinding beams of energy lit up the darkness. The armada unleashed hordes of black tendrilled abominations. The Aetherians fought valiantly but were steadily pushed back across multiple systems.
"Even they could not stand alone against the might of the Corruptors, these were the early days of the Corruption." Andy said solemnly.
The vision changed again. Now Calvin saw a planet not unlike Earth. Scattered settlements and cities dotted the landscape. The people went about their lives, unaware of the end rapidly approaching.
Then the sky tore open. A colossal, squid-like beast emerged, dwarfing mountains. Hordes of scuttling, insectoid creatures poured from the rift behind it. Leviathan worms erupted from the ground. Winged terrors blackened the skies. Monstrous beasts beyond comprehension set upon the settlements.
The people tried to fight back, but they were hopelessly overwhelmed. A towering reptilian titan crushed entire cities beneath its feet. Swarms of ravenous creatures flooded the streets. Within hours, the planet was lost.
"Without the Aetherians, civilizations fell quickly to the Corruptors," Andy said. "But in their final act, the Aetherians created the Obsidian Heart. Which you have found and now walk this path."
Andy's projections continued, painting a dire portrait of what they would soon face. Entire star systems succumbed to the rapacious hunger of gargantuan space beasts. Unfathomable wormlike beings large enough to consume planets whole left only shattered remnants behind. Swarms of fleshy, insectoid creatures descended on populated worlds, overwhelming all resistance. Even races blessed with great power and advanced technologies fell before the endless Corruptor onslaught.
Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.
The scenes shifted rapidly, assaulting the senses. On one planet, a towering humanoid wreathed in lightning battled tirelessly against an army of chitinous horrors before being dragged down. On another, a glowing angelic figure surrounded by an army of millions, carved fiery swathes through the dark swarm, only to be enveloped from all sides. Again and again, champions arose to turn back the tide, unleashing devastating magics - only to finally fall exhausted against the endless numbers.
No world was spared from the Corruptors' influence. Lush garden planets became infested hives. Industrial worlds were stripped to the bedrock by voracious worms. Proud armadas were torn apart by horrific space leviathans. Even near-omnipotent energy beings were twisted by the Corruption, becoming nightmarish shadows of their former selves. Each hard-won victory was but a brief respite before the next wave arrived.
At last, the projections centered on Earth, showing a potential future. The once-vibrant planet was now cloaked in a sickly haze. Ominous dark clouds swirled overhead, lit from within by the glow of raging fires. The seas ran red with blood as unfathomable monsters rose from the depths to feast. Colossal creatures, all teeth, and tentacles, rampaged unchecked across the continents, trampling ruined cities beneath their bulk.
The remnants of humanity fought on, desperately using every tool and weapon at their disposal. But it was clear they were losing ground steadily. For each abomination cut down, two more took its place. The tireless sacrifices of many bought precious time for a few to survive, if only a while longer.
The view shifted to a massive gleaming City on the shores of the ocean, In the center of the city that spanned thousands of miles was the Hall of the Aegis. Floating high above the city's edge, Calvin coordinated the defenses. His eyes glowed with power as he called down storms and lightning to decimate encroaching swarms. Nearby, Freya tore through the ranks in the form of a savage godlike wolf. Marshall moved among the injured defenders, knitting flesh and bone with but a touch. Amy unleashed her deadly arts, massive clouds of diseases and poisons withered the enemy by the thousands. Seth's forged constructs held the line, some towering hundreds of feet tall, pummeling any who drew near with immense autocannons that fired ammunition so powerful they tore furrows in the earth below as they traveled to their target. And Ian rained down elemental fury, scouring the land clear of the Corruptor taint - if only briefly.
For now, they held their ground and slowly pushed back the hordes. But the endless numbers continued to advance, relentless and uncaring. This was but one bastion among many, an island of hope in a sea of chaos and death.
Andy lowered his hands, his expression grim. The vivid projections faded, returning them to the balcony overlooking Olympus.
"You have witnessed but the smallest fraction of what we face," he said. "This is but an example of what may come if the Corruptors are allowed to gain a foothold. You've been shown these images not to cause you fear, but to show you what's at stake and why you walk the path you do."
The android swept his gaze over them. "Much will be asked of you in the days ahead. Hold true to each other, and do not lose hope."
The vision ended abruptly, returning them to the balcony. Calvin's heart was pounding as he processed what he had witnessed. The scale of this conflict was beyond anything he could have imagined.
Marshall let out a low whistle. "Well, damn... And here I was thinking the giant bugs were as bad as it got."
Andy raised a hand for attention. "One final thing. Once the tutorial ends and you're transported back to Earth, Olympus will be enveloped in an impenetrable barrier for 24 of your Earth hours. This will shield you as the lands of the tutorial are reintegrated. Many aspects of the environment may change as your lands are reincorporated back to Earth. The settlements you have control over will remain intact, however, the lands around them may change entirely."
Calvin nodded. Andy's revelations were sobering, but their course remained unchanged.
"Andy please have everyone available meet in the central plaza. Inform the other settlements we will make an announcement in one hour."
Andy nodded and flickered away.
An hour later, the council gathered in Olympus's central plaza. Calvin stood at the front of the raised dais, draped in his cloak etched with arcane runes that marked him as Aegis. To his right stood Amy, Tank and Freya, radiating quiet menace even at rest. On his left were Seth, Marshall, and Ian, their clothing bearing similar ornate designs befitting their station. Before them, a sea of faces looked up expectantly, citizens and soldiers alike, all curious what announcement necessitated such a gathering.
Calvin stepped forward, his voice carrying clearly across the silent plaza. "People of Olympus. The end of our journey here draws near. By this time tomorrow, we will have returned to Earth."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd at this reminder. Calvin raised a hand for silence before continuing.
"I know many of you are afraid of what awaits us there." Calvin's tone hardened, eyes flashing. "Make no mistake, the challenges ahead are unlike anything we've faced so far."
The crowd shifted uneasily at this proclamation. Calvin swept his gaze over them, letting the weight of his words sink in.
"But we are no longer the scattered, frightened souls brought to this place. Each day we have grown stronger. Our ranks have swelled." Calvin gestured to the settlement leaders arrayed nearby. "Our walls now protect hundreds, not dozens. And we will not stop searching for more survivors."
Shouts of agreement arose from the soldiers. Calvin pressed on, voice rising.
"We have been armed! Equipped with skills and weapons to withstand the storm. Our minds and bodies reforged into living weapons!"
The crowd stirred, feeding off Calvin's energy. He raised a clenched fist.
"And we have been united! Bound together under one banner, no longer alone before the darkness."
Cheers erupted from the assembly. Calvin stood tall, cloak whipping in the wind.
"The light of Olympus will never be extinguished! We will drive back the shadow and shield those who seek refuge in our halls!"
The plaza thundered with cheers and applause. Soldiers beat weapons against shields, bellowing their readiness. Calvin waited as the furor died down.
"The days ahead will test us all. But we will face them together, as one people, one city!" Calvin declared. "If we stand united, no force in this world can extinguish our flame!"
A final roar rose from the crowd. As it tapered off, Calvin raised his spear in salute. On cue, the assembled soldiers slammed their fists against their chests and bowed their heads in perfect unison to their leader. A simple gesture, but one that spoke volumes of their loyalty and readiness to lay down their lives at his command.
Calvin held the salute a moment longer, then stepped back. The council members moved forward to speak briefly, bolstering Calvin's words, before dispersing into the crowd to make final preparations.
The people's spirits were renewed. Fear remained, but it was tempered by fiery resolve. Tonight they would celebrate one final time, strengthening the bonds between them. Tomorrow, they would brace for what came next, placing their faith in each other and the leaders who had guided them this far.
United as one, the city and its people stood ready. The storm awaited, but they would weather it all the same. They were Olympus. And not even the wrath of gods could extinguish their flame.
----------------------------------------
The Council stood upon the dais overlooking the gathered citizens of Olympus. All eyes were fixed upon the flickering countdown displayed above the fountain, steadily ticking away the final seconds before the end of their tutorial experience.
Though outwardly composed, Calvin's mind raced as he watched the timer. Had their trials truly prepared them for what lay ahead? Glancing to either side, he saw similar thoughts reflected on the faces of his companions.
The numbers shifted, displaying a mere five seconds remaining. A hush fell over the crowd. The city held its breath. Calvin's grip tightened on his spear. This was it - the moment of truth. Around them, reality itself seemed to waver and grow hazy.
Four seconds. Three. Two...
A blue, energetic, barrier dome materialized, encasing all of Olympus in a protective cocoon. Blinding light erupted overhead, forcing all to shield their eyes. When they looked up again, the dome projected a vista of streaking stars and swirling galaxies. The universe itself appeared in motion around them.
Then, in a flash, the stars coalesced and a message appeared in front of everybody.
WELCOME TO EARTH.
