Chapter 76 - Fallen Snow

Chapter 76 - Fallen Snow

Leiah Lexington’s P.O.V

As Falyn Elway's team dashed off into the distance, I sprinted through the snow, each step sinking me further into the icy terrain. The urgency in the air hung like a leaden weight, matching the rhythm of my pounding heart. The ground beneath me crunched and groaned, mirroring the turmoil within me.

"Renz," I gasped, falling to my knees beside his inert form. The frigid snow bit into my legs, but I barely felt it. He lay there, so still, his face etched with the pain that had brought us to this desperate moment. Gently, I cradled his unconscious head in my lap, the softness of his raven-black hair a stark contrast to the unforgiving cold.

"Lade," I implored, my voice trembling with frustration, "hurry up and use your light magic to heal him."

Renz, the stubborn fool, had always acted as if he were untouchable, invincible. But here, in the unforgiving wilderness, the harsh reality had caught up with him, as it often does with those who refuse to yield. The snowflakes danced around us, oblivious to the gravity of the situation, a cruel reminder of the beauty that could be found even in the bleakest of moments.

Lade's hands, bathed in a soft, ethereal glow, hovered over Renz's prone body. The shimmering aura they emitted seemed to defy the harshness of our surroundings. The magic hummed and crackled in the frigid air, weaving its intricate dance of life and light.

In this desperate tableau, we were three souls bound by fate, trying to mend the wounds that both the world and our choices had inflicted upon us. But deep down, I couldn't help but feel the truth of it: there is always a bigger fish.

With determination etched across my face, I seized a sturdy stick and settled by the crackling fire, its warm glow casting elongated shadows across our campsite. My gaze shifted between my two steadfast teammates, Tasha and Kayla, the dancing flames reflecting in their eyes. The time had come to formulate a strategy, and I could feel the weight of our quest bearing down upon us.

"Now that we've replenished our strength and mana pools," I began, my voice resolute, "we need a well-thought-out game plan." Their attention was undivided, leaning in to absorb my every word.

My confidence didn't waver as I continued. "Without a shadow of doubt, Falyn has seized the opportunity while we were regaining our strength. I'm convinced he now possesses the shard. Therefore, I propose that our best course of action is to focus our efforts on tracking him down." With a stick, I began to sketch a rough representation of Falyn's figure in the snow and encircled it.

Tasha, who knew Falyn's capabilities as intimately as I did, nodded in agreement. Her face mirrored a mix of concern and determination, understanding the gravity of the situation.

However, Kayla wasn't entirely convinced. "There's no way he could have taken it from Renz that quickly," she countered, a hint of skepticism in her voice. "And what about the other teams? Are we simply going to dismiss the possibility of them having the shard as well? Focusing solely on one team might not be the wisest choice."

I respected Kayla's perspective, and Tasha, with a furrowed brow, chimed in. "Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, Kayla," she admitted, crossing her arms in contemplation. "But we can't underestimate Falyn Elway. He's not just strong; he's potentially the strongest in the entire class. It's the most plausible plan, in all honesty. I believe he has the shard."

As we sat by the fire, surrounded by the rugged wilderness, it became clear that our unity, trust, and this decisive plan were our best hope.

With our plan set, we quickly gathered our gear, ensuring we left no trace of our presence in the campsite. Kayla, her initial doubt now transformed into a shared determination, meticulously extinguished the fire, and we covered our tracks as best we could, blending in with the snow and the surrounding landscape.

Tasha, ever the cautious one, spoke up as we made our way through the frigid wilderness. "Remember, the shard is a potent artifact, and it's not just Falyn we need to be concerned about. Other teams are undoubtedly vying for it as well. We have to keep a watchful eye on every possible threat."

The mission's finish point lay still half a day's journey ahead of us, and the need to stay inconspicuous until then loomed large. It was undoubtedly going to be a considerable challenge, but we were determined to face it head-on.

Our success hinged on one critical condition: as long as no other teams were aware of our possession of the shard, our chances of slipping under the radar remained high.

In this crucial moment, Lina took on the role of our guide. She expertly led our team through the dense, snow-drenched forest of the Dwarven Mountains. The interlacing branches of ancient trees, weighed down with the fresh powder of the season, cast eerie shadows in the fading light of the evening. The white landscape glistened under the twilight sky, making our surroundings seem almost otherworldly.

With night gradually descending upon us, the necessity of finding an appropriate location to set up camp became evident. A well-chosen campsite would not only provide us shelter from the impending cold but also enable us to maintain a steady and healthy pace, making it essential for the success of our mission.

As we stumbled upon a cavern, our weary bodies welcomed the opportunity to catch our breath and rest for a moment. I found myself glancing at Lina, who had momentarily drifted off into her thoughts. There was something oddly familiar about her expression, something that resonated both with our shared childhood memories and the intense mission at hand, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Lily, ever the voice of reason, noticed our preoccupation and gently reminded us, "You guys seem so focused. You do know it's okay to relax sometimes, right?"

Lina's face, which had been marked by a sense of seriousness, suddenly flushed with embarrassment as she let her shoulders sag. "Yeah, you're right, I guess. This is a resting point."

I couldn't help but smile at her response. "Agreed. We're only twelve hours away from victory, and I'd say that's well-deserved."

Lina's eyes darted away for a moment, and she admitted, "If it wasn't for you, Fal, we wouldn't have the shard right now. So if anyone deserves it, it's you." Her head hung slightly as she continued, "I just don't feel like I've done enough."

I met her gaze and said reassuringly, "You've done plenty. You, too, Lily. You've both been great assets to this team."

I cleared my throat, a sense of urgency welling up within me. "But the mission is not over. I have this feeling that your brother knows we have the shard and is pursuing us as we speak," I warned.

Lina's brows furrowed with concern. "Hanz?" she asked, her voice tinged with doubt. "How would he know?"

I considered for a moment before responding, "I grew up with him. Trained with him. I know how he thinks. So we must be careful. Besides Renz's team, his team is our only real match."
