Everett Maxon (2)

"So, what made you guys sign up as adventurers?"

I heard an excited voice coming from beside me as I walked through the guild. The voice belonged to Mason Turner, a fellow party member. He's been real chatty since the veterans sent the three of us off.

I suppose I can entertain him for the moment, "Well, as the veteran said, I'm a second-class mage. I thought I would be able to break through to first-class adventuring."

"Wow, that's a cool reason!"

He seemed quite impressed with the reason I gave him. That made me feel good inside for some reason.

"What about you Ms. Cross? How come you became an adventurer?"

Mason turned around to ask the woman who was following shortly behind us. She had an expressionless face as she walked. I guess she was uninterested in the conversation because she completely ignored Mason.

"Oh, okay then." He turned back with a saddened expression. Great, now I feel bad.

"So tell me, why did you join Mason?" I asked so as not to sour the mood.

"Hmm, me? Oh, I guess I was told to by my master."

"Huh?" Wait, wasn't this guy self-taught? Could he be schizophrenic? What master could he possibly be referring to? I wanted to dig deeper, but he had a complicated expression, so I didn't push further.

"Anyways, where are we going?"

His mood changed in an instant and he was back to his normal self.

"We're going to purchase some equipment for our mission."

At our current level, completing the mission without gear should be possible. However, we were recommended to purchase gear by the veterans. We are newbies who have nearly zero experience, so it's best to follow advice from more experienced people.

We managed to make our way out of the adventurers guild building. I turned and saw that only Mason was following me.

"Huh?"

I looked around to find out where Liara went, but there was a huge crowd around the guild. It would be hard to find her for a normal person, but I'm not normal. I handed Mason a list and told him to meet me at The Devil's Armory while I search. That was the name of the armory the veterans recommended shop at

"Okay, I'll be waiting there."

"If I'm not there in two hours, use this to purchase everything on the list."

I handed him around fifty gold coins. He seemed dumbfounded at the amount I gave him and I became confused.

"What? Is it not enough?"

I thought that the amount I gave him might not be enough, but he shook his head. I've never really been out shopping before, so I'm not very good at money. I've only ever been out to attend banquets with my family, I have never actually gone to a store.

If you encounter this narrative on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

"It's not that, I'm just surprised you gave me so much!"

"Oh, alright. Just use what you need and keep the rest, I don't need it."

"Yessir, you can count-" I began walking off before he could finish. Not that I dislike the guy, but he talks too much. If I want to find Liara, I'll have to spend every second I have wisely. This might take ages.

Just then, I spotted a blue-haired girl shuffling through the crowd. Well, that was much easier than I expected.

I began to make my way through the crowd toward her as soon as I spotted her.

She was walking briskly and with haste, almost as if she already had a destination in mind. Speaking of which, isn't that the way to the city's north gate? There's no way she's thinking…

While I was contemplating what she could be doing, Liara looks up as if she spotted something and picked her pace.

She is heading toward the gate! There's no way she's considering completing this mission alone! I have to catch up to her, but she's already quite far ahead of me.

I decided on meeting her near the north gate, so I began preparing a teleportation spell. This spell was incredibly hard to master as there are very few books on spatial magic and even fewer magicians with the knowledge on it.

After I accumulated the necessary amount of mana and did the right calculations, I began preparing the spell.

I walked over to a nearby stall and stood still, as I needed to visualize the location to teleport. I could hear the stall owner attempting to speak with me, but I did not attempt to pay her any mind as I needed to focus.

I finally finished the necessary calculations, I activated the spell.

Within two seconds, I appeared in the sky near the gate. I was up high. So high that I could barely see the people walking below. I seem to be higher than I initially planned. I tried to breathe but my lungs wouldn't inhale the air. That is to be expected I guess. At the speed I was falling currently, I could die if I hit the ground.

I wasn't scared, however. As I was falling, I cast numerous short-range bursts of wind toward the ground to slow my descent.

As I got closer and closer to the ground, I began to cast a hovering spell. I was just slightly higher above the head of a passerby when I came to a complete stop.

The pedestrian looked up in shock as he realized me above him. I maneuvered myself beside him before deactivating my hover.

"G-greetings my lord!"

"Ah, hello." Perhaps he noticed my garments, or it was due to the magic I utilized, but immediately recognized my higher status.

I briefly gave my farewells to the man and continued my way toward the gates.
