I let out a scream of frustration as I came up with nothing, I had activated everything I could and short of taking control of a gun myself there was nothing more I could do. I watched the missiles flying towards the station, the laser emitters taking out most of them, until a few dozen made it through to splash over the shimmering field. It caused me to wince as the power levels dropped to 60 percent. I glanced at the carrier just in time to see a shot hit it somewhere in the rear, near the thrusters, causing an explosion that splintered the ship into multiple pieces. The volley of missiles launched before the ship went dark. I quickly scanned the area, seeing only debris and wrecked ships, my eyes quickly moved back to the missiles coming. The orbital stations defences put up the best fight they could, but a dozen missiles made it through, splashing against the shimmering field.
“Oh, we are down to fifty percent, that's not good.”
“That explains why two more carriers are heading in. However, I think the first one is a sacrifice, so the second one can pound our unprotected hull.”
“That is an expensive sacrifice, and all those lives lost. What is wrong with these Twiddles people?”
“Uh, well, maybe we should abandon the station and take that ship in the dry dock back to earth?”
“We can't, it is only half built, the engine isn't even in it yet, and it won't be finished in time to get us out of here, besides even if we did run onboard that ship back to earth, they would just have an easier time shooting us.”
“Oh, yea, that is a good point, Kenna.”
“…Oh crap, I don't think the second one is a sacrifice, the third one is moving faster than the second, I think they plan to hit us at the same time.”
“Damn, damn, damn! Alright, alright, uh, take control of a long range gun and target the carriers, they spit out the most missiles, I don't know why, in all honesty they shouldn't have any missiles but let's make sure they don't get close enough to use any of them!”
“Right, I can do that… I think, hey, um, Kenna, How do I take control of a long gun?”
“I have just been resting on the table and thinking about what I want to do, it sort of works.”
“Sort of?”
“Yea, well, sometimes it works and other times it brings up a menu for me to navigate until I find what I want.”
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
“That's just great, there better be a manual for this” she muttered as she walked over to the table and placed her hands on it.
I thought about taking control of a long range gun, and the next second I was staring out into space with a targeting reticle in front of my vision. It felt like my feet were glued to the hull, and the piece of metal under me would swivel as I tried to turn. After a few seconds of frantically searching the area, I spotted the two carriers. I moved the targeting reticle until the leading carrier was in the middle, and somehow I instantly knew that it was with in my range to hit it, so I mentally pulled the trigger. My head jerked back slightly as blue plasma shot out of my face and raced away. In that second, I winced from the shock and lost connection to the long range gun and stumbled away from the table, falling onto my ass. I looked up at the hologram above the table in shock as I watched the blue line streak across space and hit a screening ship that had moved to intercept it, blasting the screening ship into shrapnel.
Ashley suddenly began to scream as blue lines began flying away from the orbital station towards the other carrier that was slightly further away from us than the one I had tried to hit was. After a minute, I noticed the blue lines were roughly ten seconds apart, indicating the gun took ten seconds to reload before it could fire again. I scrambled back to my feet and as I took those few steps back to the table I mentally prepared myself for the gun I was about to use again. My fingers hesitated before they touched the table, and a mental thought found me back on the hull of the station with that targeting reticle. I lined it up with the closer carrier and mentally pulled the trigger. Holding it down, I started to scream, now understanding it was Ashley's way of coping with the continued head jerking and weird experience of blue plasma flying out of my face. I don't know how long I had been firing the gun for, watching screening ships move into the line of fire as they attempted to defend themselves against it, only to be destroyed. The two carriers had at some point had begun to change course, evading the shots fired at them, but I did notice the click and that nothing happened after it, the gun didn't fire. A message window appeared between me and the targeting reticle. ‘Long range weapon has overheated. Cooldown timer 2 minutes’ the timer instantly began counting down.
As my eyes focused on the space ahead of the gun, I noticed that all the screening ships were gone and one of the carriers was turning away from the station with a hole in its side, heading back to the perimeter. I let out a sigh of relief as I let the connection to the long range gun go and stumbled back from the table again to watch the hologram images of the ships. I damn near jumped out of my skin again when the room was suddenly flooded with people, most of them carrying weapons. But, my eyes focused on the woman that ran straight to the command table and placed her hands on it. A holographic screen appeared in front of her, and she inputted some code into it before it vanished and was replaced with a command table menu. She then manoeuvred through the menu, inputting her code again and again until the screen vanished, and she sagged slightly before announcing to the room.
“Okay, I have done it, the protected neutral zone is restored, and I have changed the targeting parameters to defence only instead of neutralise and defend.”
Everyone in the room instantly left the room, and I noticed through the door they were spreading out and taking up defence positioning throughout the guild hall. My eyes shifted back to the woman, who was now opening a new menu screen and tapped a few buttons before it vanished, and a holographic microphone appeared in front of her.
“Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! This is Blossoming Terranova orbital station to any Galactic Federation Alliance ships that can hear this transmission, we are under attack, inside a protected neutral zone! Our gateway is open, we are requesting reinforcements and aid to help in repelling this invader! I repeat. Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! This is Blossoming Terranova orbital station to any Galactic Federation Alliance ships that can hear this transmission, we are under attack, inside a protected neutral zone! Our gateway is open, we are requesting reinforcements and aid to help in repelling this invader! Please send aid.”
The microphone vanished, and she let go of the table and turned to face me before she spoke again.
“Greetings, Guild Mistress Kenna Mackenzie, I am Captain Jessica Biko from the Galactic Federation Headquarters, and I have been sent here to establish your galactic Legitimacy and aid you in any way I can with the Galactic Federations Interests within your Solar System.”
