Series Introduction
Greetings and welcome to this non-canonical series of mine! I've been playing Sonic games as long as I can remember. Although I rarely find myself loving them, I always go back to them every once in a while and I've always had ideas for what a Sonic story should be like. So, here we are.
I feel like Sonic is one of the most wasted properties out there when it comes to what could have been. Sure, we have loads of great music, occasionally some decent gameplay, but what about the stories? You could argue that some Sonic stories approach something somewhat alright, or even just have good elements of stories in them, but the vast majority of Sonic's adventures amount to little more than nonsense with a thin tale wrapped around them.
One of the issues that plagues the Sonic series as a whole is the issue of canon, or what stories take place in the same universe as others. This can lead to questions such as; does Sonic Adventure exist in the same world as Sonic Frontiers? Now, these should be rather simple questions with a rather simple answers. Just, ask the owner of the Sonic franchise, Sega, which stories are canon to each-other. The thing is, they once tweeted that everything is canon.
If this is a joke, then the child version of me was right to see every Sonic game as its own story that borrows elements from the others. If it isn't a joke, this only destroys what little world-building we have. This would mean that Sonic and Mario compete in the olympics with their villains, who are taking breaks I suppose, between Sonic's adventures through time, space, simulations, other realities, king Arthur's England, and a literal book. Maybe they should team up sometime, if they're not too busy fighting every character throughout gaming in Super Smash Bros.

Now, I'm not saying that I want less connectivity between stories. I enjoyed the references in Frontiers as much as any other life-long fan might. But, they have to be more than just references. Plot points from previous games need to connect to the overall story in order to make it better. The governments from those games still exist? Where have they been since then? Humans live on the same planet as Sonic? Where are they most of the time? Shadow survived? How? Why?
That said, where does my story take place in the infinite canon of Sonic? Nowhere. This is a completely unique world that isn't connected to any other Sonic universe. I just feel like this is the least messy way to get my ideas across and I think that using a world that someone else created is a little lazy and not very creative.
What are my goals with this series? I want to create clear and consistent characters for the cast of the Sonic games. I want to retell some Sonic stories in my own way while adding in new stuff here and there. I want to show that there really is some story potential in this bizarre franchise. I want to get these ideas out of my head. I want to get started already!
But first, I want you to know that I'll answer any questions you might have about the series right here. (The first 3 come from me)
Q1: Are rings in your universe?
A: I've always seen rings as things that are there for gameplay purposes, not for the story. So no, I likely won't use rings in my story.
Q2: Do the Freedom Fighters exist in your universe?
A: Some of them do. Not all of them.
Q3: Are you ignoring 06?
A: Not entirely. You'll see. :)
