The Hunt For Rules

The Hunt For Rules

If you eat too little you starve and if you eat too much and you become unhealthy. Rules are the opposite: too many and you starve, too few and you wax fat. In order to accomplish anything–to become at least that 'coherent whole'–rules are a necessity. Perhaps there is an alternative anarchic solution to accomplishing things, but it has always been with strict rules that I've climbed out of my shallow pits and hiked my meager heights. In contrast, the indulgent, idle way of life has served to sidetrack and mire me in distraction. That is not to say one should crush out interest and curiosity, but that one should give them strength: crush out the voice that wants you to do easier things, play videogames and stuff your face and forget the labor of curiosity, because curiosity is such a labor...Passions and rules must work together to fence out the indulgence, which undermines the self and promises a spiral to a meaningless life and then death.

I want to save the world. That notion keeps returning...But whether the rusted dream aims to animate or save the world, a balance of rules–neither too few nor many–will be needed to become a competent person.

Therefore today marks the beginning of a hunt for rules to live by. Good rules that make the body, mind and soul better. That encourage passion, bring motivation and perhaps one day may bring back the quicksilver, lightning mind.

The number entries that follow will tell the outcome: look ahead, cast your eyes, see what you see, read my future to me.
