On the Lap of Time

Sit and relax. The wind whistles and the sun wheels. Rise and fall, the clouds drift and the waves lap. A propeller plane buzzes and lands–it's your friend!

He gets out of the plane with a swing and tousles his hair, an expression of consternation nevertheless on his face. "Hey, why are you listening to music while writing right now?"

The sun glimmers on the waves, dolphins leap in the waves.

"No!" He grabs your arm. "Listen to me. It's just distracting you. You also don't know how to write well. How about sitting down and stop using extraneous words?"

You shrug and look at the beach. The sand is warm underfoot, palms waving and ocean beckoning.

"The song just ended–this is a good opportunity, ok? You haven't drawn yet, either." He sighs and furrows his brow. "I don't know where dreams blossom from, but a lot of things are up in the air right now. Big news came in. Maybe you won't be able to enter Kyoto Animation, maybe the rusty remnants of your mind will be lost in the coming months.

"So stop talking to yourself, alright?" He slaps you on the arm and grins, white teeth on tanned skinned. "Guess that's my cue." He takes off in a jog down the beach.

"Draw!" The singular word echoes back unconvincingly.

You sigh or maybe you don't, but evidently it's been one of those days.

It's painful and yet...I need tomorrow to roll over now. Eyes close, pencil drops. Ugly wrecks linger on the paper, words stay in the mind.
