Chapter 3 (V2): Buckethead

It has been 2 days since I was told of the death of Elizabeth. I had been trying to figure out a good time to ask the man watching over the infirmary.

From what I can remember from the game, the robe that the man is wearing suggests that his rank was at least a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of the Mage Corps of the Kalmar Empire. Judging that his job was watching over the infirmary his restoration skill should be at least 100 and his other magical skills were 60. I noticed that he did not carry a dagger which means he would have to use conjuration magic to summon a dagger. If he could summon a dagger, then he could raise lesser undead…

It was a rainy day, and I had a day left until the end of me being stuck in this infirmary room. However, I was hoping that I could convince the man if I could stay longer. Even though these thoughts of manipulating this man who has been sincere to me during my stay in the infirmary, I didn’t feel guilty at all. From what I can remember from my previous life, I was an honest person with 0 social skills, so I do not know where this confidence of myself enacting this plan comes from.

Perhaps when I actually commit I the feeling of guilt will set in.

During his daily check-up of me today I will commit to this plan of mine…

----------------------------------------

The man walked into my room. His blue robe with yellow accents was still as bright as when I first saw him. He really does not leave this building that, much does he? The expression on his face was warm and his gentle blue eyes were as pretty as sapphire. Although his eyes were not as cool or beautiful as my red eyes.  As he approached me, I felt his body heat, and smelt his herbal scent. The smell, which reminded me of mint, felt out of place, is he perhaps making some sort of tea or potion?

“May I see your stomach?”

His voice was deep and sincere, it reminded me of several actors that I heard in my previous life.

I slowly raised my shirt, however being careless, I almost revealed too much, before he stopped.

“You don’t have to show me that much,” he said with a gentle smile.

“Oh… right…” I said quietly

I then lifted my shirt down a little while my face was turning red and I looked away from him to hide my embarrassment.

He reached his hand and touched my stomach. His fingers were warm, and the texture was a bit rough, but not enough where I could tell that he used physical daggers rather than a summoned one.

“Does it still hurt when I touch it?”

I nodded while maintaining the fact that I was not looking at his eyes. I did not want him to catch me lying, after all, I do not want to leave just yet.

“Alright, you can put your shirt down now. I guess I can have you stay a few more days.”

As he said that I noticed that he had some sort of paper poking out of his robe.

“Umm… What is your name mister?” I said as timidly as I could.

“My name… my name is Liam.”

“Well… Mr. Liam, c-can you teach me magic.”

“Magic? Why do you want to learn magic?” he said as his gentle expression turned serious.

“I-I’m curious, after all, Mr. Liam looks s-so cool wearing his mage robes and I-I WANT TO BE JUST LIKE MR. LIAM WHEN I GROW UP!”

Gotta pull on all those heartstrings using good ol’ loli tricks in the book. Maybe if I was a little girl in my previous life, I wouldn’t have gone through so much hell.

“W-well I guess it can’t hurt, after all, I guess I have to atone for my comrade’s actions,” he said as his face turns red.

“R-really?! Mr. Liam is so cool!” I said with a wide smile and bright eyes.

“Before we begin, do you know the basics of magic?” he said as he summoned a stool out of thin air. What the fuck that spell wasn’t in the game.

“Uhh… k-kind of,” I said while tapping my pointing fingers together.

“Well can you tell me what you know?”

“I-I guess, there are tiny things in your body that can create mana in your body. As your body produces mana, it also stores it. The amount that you can store is based on your level and it can also be stored by wearing special enchanted gear. Your body will never produce more than it needs, and it cannot be replenished during combat, during intense exercise, or in the middle of casting spells without the use of a mana potion.”

“You sure know a lot despite your age… now do you know how your body uses the mana in your body?”

“I-I think so, is it because your brain sends special signals throughout your body?”

“Correct your brain sends special signals throughout your body’s nervous system.”

“Nervous system,” I said with a confused expression.

“It’s a system in your body that consists of several organs and fibers to inform your body how to function. This system is essential to performing chantless spells.”

“Does that mean that there are spells that require you to chant?”

“Yes, it does, higher-level conjuration magic requires special chants to activate, there are also those who can use a special kind of magic known as Dragon Tongue, these people are known as Dragonslayers.”

Dragonslayers huh? So, this world is based on the Remastered Edition then.

“Now before I continue do you know how to cast a spell or two?”

This is my chance.

“N-no, but can you show me?”

“Well if you can’t then I shall teach you.” He said as he indicated for me to wait. “I will be grabbing the materials that will be needed to teach you. Is there anything particular that you would like me to teach you?”

“Can you teach me how to raise the undead?” I said trying to not raise suspicion. He then nodded and left the room entirely.

I looked outside the window and what felt like a long time had passed of me sitting around doing nothing, Liam came back with a dark purple book.

“Is that a tome?!” I said with a bright aura around me.

“Yes, now place your hand onto this tome.”

I placed my hand on the tome, the cover of it felt smooth and leathery. I never knew that I would miss a book this much after all every time I would see a book this thick in my previous life, If I ever saw this in my previous life I would have groaned.

“Now repeat after me… transfer knowledge.”

[Transfer Knowledge]

The tome then exploded into dust and then I received a painful headache that I noticed made me paler. The pain was as painful as your toe hitting the leg of a chair, except instead of your toe screaming in pain, it was your larger forehead. As the pain began to subside so did the color of my skin.

“Well how was that experience?” said Liam with a wide grin.

“It felt like my soul was starting to leave my body.”

“You can thank Sage for cursing us mortal beings for that.”

Why did the game make it seem so simple, but in real life, it is actually this painful? Now I feel bad for all my mage playthroughs that I did.

“Does that pain happen every time?”

“Well… the higher the level the spell, the more painful it will be,” he said with a proud smile.

I don’t think that is something you should be proud of, you masochist.

Unauthorized use of content: if you find this story on Amazon, report the violation.

“Anyways, returning to the subject at hand, the spell that I taught you was {Raise Lesser Dead} which means you can SR1 beings.”

“SR1?”

“Strength Rating 1 or animals that are level 5 or less.”

This wasn’t a concept that was ever in the game, so I am curious about how it works.

“How high does strength rating go?”

“Strength ratings go all the way up to 20 and those that cross level 100 are called SR20+.”

Through the power of mathematics! That would mean that every 5 levels you gain 1 SR.

“Now do you know why I specifically said animals?”

“N-no?”

“Because the way you make the dead do you bidding is through sharing your soul with the dead creature. Part of a humanoid soul is not enough for a dead humanoid.”

“S-sharing… th-that sounds scawy” I said while filling my eyes with fake tears.

“The entire process is completely painless, and even then, you are limited to only splitting your soul for 30 minutes per cast,” he said while giving me a head pat.

Is he trying to calm me down or is he enjoying this more than I thought?

“Now show me that you can cast this spell.”

He showed the palm of his hand as he began to cup it. In the middle of his palm purple particles began to form an orb.

“It should only take 5 seconds for an orb-like this to appear on your hand.”

I cupped my hand as he did and while thinking of the {Raise Lesser Dead} spell. Purple particles began to appear around the palm of my hand as an orb quickly appeared. The orb felt warm and I could feel a part of me leaving my body.

“I-is this magic?” I said with sparkling eyes.

“Yes, yes well done. Now cast it on this thing.” He said as he reached into his pouch and pulled out a small dead rat.

“O-okay”

I aimed at the dead rat as he placed it on the ground.

“Now think of the word “release.”

[Release]

The orb then went flying and disappeared as it hit the rat. The rat glowed purple for a couple of seconds before it began to appear to be living again.

Now think of a simple command that it could do.

Spin around.

The small rat began to spin around in a circle.

“C-cute!” I screamed.

“Great job little one,” he said while patting my head.

“I am not little!” I said while pouting.

“Yes, yes, and I am not old just because I’m 20,” he said while laughing for a long minute.

“Uhh... Mr. Liam…”

“Yes?”

“Can I ask you to do me a favor?” I said while trying to mimic puppy eyes.

“Y-yes?”

“Can you summon something and pray with me?”

“U-uh sure…”

I noticed an orb appeared on his hand and he pointed it on the ground. When the orb hit the wind, a small mini-tornado appeared, and in the center of it was a skeleton.

I then put my hands together and closed my eyes while lowering my head a little.

“Now repeat after me Mr. Liam: Tills döden skiljer oss åt.”

“Tills döden skiljer oss åt.”

I lifted one of my eyes and I saw that he had commanded his skeleton to pray as well.

Now I have to convince him to do it for 2 more days.

“Now the prayer has ended.”

“Well, that was unexpected.”

Oh fuck.

“W-what was unexpected,” I said with a shocked expression.

“I didn’t expect you to be this religious,” he said with a wide smile.

“W-well you know it’s not like I wanted to pray with you or anything… st-stupid,” I said while pouting.

Liam then collapsed onto the ground despite sitting on a magical stool.

“M-Mr. Liam?! Mr. Liam! I screamed when I jumped out of bed and landed beside his body. I looked at his face, it was pretty obvious why he fainted, and I guess the blood too...

Well since he is unconscious, I might as well investigate what he has in his magical pouch that he has. Wait how exactly do I use manipulation? In the game, it was a simple press of a button while sneaking behind the person, but this is not a game, it was real life.

I guess there is no way to know unless I experiment for the time being. Despite being called manipulation, the skill is more akin to pickpocketing rather than forcing people to do your dastardly deeds. I guess the developers just didn't want to explain how the NPCs in the game have such deep pockets. I touched the pouch on Liam’s belt, and I felt a familiar feeling, it was like mana was being channeled into the pouch.

Would I need to chant something to look at the pouch? No that wouldn’t make sense because the whole point of manipulation is to sneakily steal something from someone. Like what kind of true man of gender equality idiot would say an incantation to steal something from someone?

Maybe I should just look at the manipulation skill tree to see if I can learn how to use it.

Manipulation Abilities:

| Pickpocket: 0/1 | Light Fingers: 0/5 | Night Thief: 0/1 | Cutpurse 0/1 |

| Extra Pockets: 0/1 |

Oh, I forgot that you have to spend 1 Branch to have the ability to steal from someone in the first place and to gain a Branch I need to level up first.

Well, in that case, I guess I’ll have to use another exploit to look into that pouch of his. But first I need to look for a bucket. I stood and quietly took my first steps for the first time since I was sent to the infirmary. With each step, I felt that the floor below me creaking.

Walking silently without socks is a lot harder than I thought. Perhaps I should try walking on my tippy toes.

As I slowly moved out of the room, I looked out and into the hallway. The hallway was not if I thought, meaning that this building was small. Well, it does not bother me too much; in fact, it makes my task a lot easier. As I moved into the hallway, I investigated each room because I was curious if they were other patients here. Each room I looked in was empty.

I guess I am the only person stupid enough to get hurt. Although it is suspicious that there were not any sick people here.

My toes felt like they were in pain the more steps I took, but at least the wooden floor was cool to the touch, so I felt a short bit of relief when they initially touched the floor.

When I reached what I presume Liam’s office I looked around. There were books and papers scattered all around. The table was filled with bowls stacked as high as the ceiling. Right next to them were several green leaves and a mortar & pestle. As I went inside his office, I saw that there were also empty bottles for potion lying around a chest.

That’s suspicious but I don’t have time to investigate, I need that bucket.

I continued to look around the office until I found a bucket underneath the second desk in the office. The bucket was empty and looked dry, however, it did smell awful, but it was still perfect for what I needed it for. I picked up the bucket and quickly tippy-toed back to my infirmary room.

When I returned to the room, I saw Liam still laying on the floor, unconscious, with that stupid grin on his face.

Well, I hope he doesn’t feel this.

I slowly placed the bucket on his face, hoping that he would not suddenly wake up from something touching him. When the bucket was fully on top of his face, I slowly let go hoping that the bucket would not fall over. When I moved my hands away from the bucket, I made sure to wait a few seconds to ensure that it would not fall over. When it did not fall over, I then moved over and opened his pouch. A screen similar to opened in front of me as I put my hand inside the bag.

So, this is how the inventory system looks in this world.

I could see that Liam is carrying 500 coins and that his IS was 200 so I would assume that he had 200 SP, or he spent a Branch on |Extra Pockets|. Looking at his inventory it had a lot of useless crap stored in it with nothing interesting to loot.

Well, I guess I don’t nee- wait… hello. I found the “Tome of Soulbound” that could be useful for a future exploit. Ooooh, look at that 100% chance of successfully taking. Who wouldn’t think that a stupid exploit like that would work in the real world?

I guess that the stealth system is as poorly implemented as in the game.

I took the tome out of his pouch and then used [Transfer Knowledge] on it. This time, since I was prepared for the massive headache, it was not as painful as the other one. I looked at his clothes and it suddenly crossed my mind.

Wait if he’s an NCO doesn’t he have OIC to watch over him?

As I looked at the doorway, I saw a giant man standing with his arms crossed. He had blonde hair and a thick beard. His eyes were dark blue. His robe was like Liam’s except he had a piece of metal armor around his body and metallic boots.

“LIAM!!!!” he yelled as I covered my ears.

“Huh… Y-yes SIR!”

“What the hell are you doing with a bucket on your head!”

“S-si-sir, I was trying to en-entertain the little girl here as you can see!”

“Entertain? But you were on the ground with a bucket on your face?”

“It-it’s what kids these days find funny sir!”

“Well… whatever, just remember to return the bucket to me when you’re finished!” he said as he sighed and put his face on his palm.

“You’re not going to lecture me, sir?”

“It looks like you have accomplished your task,” he said pointing at me.

I, of course, was dying of laughter, not just because Liam looked stupid with a bucket on his head, but it was because his voice kept on cracking. Imagining what his face must look like under that bucket made me laugh even harder.

Liam quickly ran out of the room afterward and who I am presumed to be his OIC slowly followed him.

During the next 2 days, Liam came and prayed with me, with his summon, and my undead rat. It was during the 3rd that I realized that I made a mistake in math, fucking hell math is hard, it was actually 3.75 and 3.25 meaning that I had to pray for 4 days. Well, I guess it was not that bad it was just another day.

When we finally finished the prayer on the 4th day, I opened my as soon as Liam left the room and I learned that I had finally leveled up.

Well time to invest some points.

Rose’s blessing gave me + 5 levels for Conjuration and + 10 MP and it also had one of the most broken passive abilities ever. It was that it allowed me to raise dead “companions” without any worry of a time limit at all. I might as well invest my Branch into the Conjuration Tree. The first ability that I will spend my Branch on will be |Novice Conjurer| as a passive ability that reduces the MP cost of Tier 1 Conjuration spells by 50%. With this ability, the next exploit is going to be fun…
