There's a town at the end of the road I'm on. It's probably the only town around here.
Just like the language spoken by the strange man with the stick, these people also speak English-German so I can understand and communicate with them without any problems.
"Miss, please tell me your name."
A knight guarding the city gate spoke to me in polite language. I then answered in a low tone of voice.
"My name is White Hazel, a merchant."
The knight then looked behind me, there was nothing there but snow-covered plains and dense forests.
"Hmm. Miss White Hazel?"
Understanding what this person might be thinking, I quickly replied.
"Not long ago, the caravan I was traveling in was ambushed by a group of bandits. They slaughtered the people, while I managed to escape. If you walk along the highway, you'll find a destroyed horse-drawn carriage."
The knight in front of me then muttered.
"This is the third time this month."
Approaching the knight captain, the officer then reported. They seemed to be talking about something, I couldn't guess what they were talking about, hopefully it wouldn't harm me.
After finishing, the knight captain then approached me.
"It's very unfortunate, Miss White. I'm very sorry for what happened. The level of danger around the city is increasing with the length of the snow season, you seem to be from another city, so you don't know the information about this danger, we can't help much but at least you will definitely be safe if you are inside the city. Once again, I apologize."
"No problem. Now, may I come in? It's very cold out here."
I said that with an expressionless face, the formal uniform I was wearing making my demeanor look stiff in the eyes of others.
But it seemed like the other party didn't mind that, the knight captain then extended a hand.
"Before that, may I see the merchant guild card you have?"
Hearing that, I then grabbed a single silver coin to give it to the knight captain.
"The card was left in the carriage, I can't possibly go back there just to retrieve it."
Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.
The knight captain now looked at the silver coin in his palm, he was silent for a while before speaking again.
"This is not a matter of money, Miss White."
I again grabbed four more silver coins and gave them to the knight captain. This time, the knight captain was silent without showing any sign that he would reject me. This should work, and it usually did.
"I hope you understand my situation, Sir Knight."
I whispered that right next to his ear.
The knight captain then replied with a small nod while keeping the five silver coins I gave him.
"I see, please come in."
...
Inside a store, I chewed on an energy source that was actually dominated by the oxygen content rather than the protein and carbohydrate sources inside.
I call this simple food with less nutrition by the name of white bread.
It tasted so bad that it made me think that whoever made this thing never thought of eating it in the first place, maybe not even trying to taste it, it was just too bland. But it's worth the price of admission.
Rather than complaining about the composition of the bread and its poor taste, the only positive thing about this restaurant was that the taste of the grapes was rough enough to be enjoyable.
Of course, it wasn't entirely the seller's fault, since I bought it for a bargain price of about three copper coins, taking into account the taste and price I could be sure that this meal was specialized for the lower class of society. The class of people who always have financial problems. This is still a prediction, not entirely accurate.
After all, until now I haven't been able to grasp the true value of the coins I have.
"Come here."
I then waved my hand to the shop assistant. A young girl in modest clothes with simple seams designed to give warmth to the wearer.
The girl then approached me.
"Yes, how may I help you, Lady?"
"I want to pay."
Putting out a silver coin into the maid's hand, but the expression the girl gave me made me feel like I'd done something bad.
"We don't have the return, could the lady be so kind as to pay with the fitted money?"
"How much?"
"About nine copper coins. I apologize if this is too expensive than usual."
"No problem, I'll also give you a little bonus."
I then gave the girl about 12 copper coins. From her expression, I couldn't find any clues.
It's very difficult for me to use simple methods, I need more data with a high degree of accuracy. The problem is, to be able to obtain all the data, I need personnel who can help me.
Thinking about that for a moment and after finishing thanking the servant, I then opened the wooden door slowly while adjusting my white coat so that it wouldn't get cold.
It was quite risky for me to carry two swords and a handgun under my coat, if I was careless, perhaps the metal lining would be too cold for me to handle.
"How many years has it been since I last touched snow? Somehow, this urban atmosphere feels so familiar, peaceful and quite cozy."
I looked at every building around. Out of habit, when I was thinking about things, my hand always threw a coin into the air to play with it like it was a gamble.
The coin that I tossed into the air then stopped along with my footsteps that also froze. I looked towards the corner of the city, where my attention was distracted.
From the corner of an open church window, a priest was there. The priest seemed to be teaching an orphan how to write.
Before long, I opened the church door and tried to enter.
"Hmm..."
"Ah, there seems to be a god-guided guest. Excuse me, do you need anything, miss?"
"Of course, I was thinking about whether I should donate to the church."
"A Mercy, your kindness will surely be repaid by the almighty."
The priest then smiled kindly at me. It seemed like he believed me because of the luxurious clothes I was wearing, unlike the people in this town, the white coat was conspicuous, so it was very likely that people thought whoever wore it was a noble or a wealthy merchant.
Appearance does always have a big influence on how others perceive you.
"You see, I've always wished to have a child from someone, but until now, god has never granted my wish. I fear that this is a rebuke from God for not donating some of my wealth to those in need."
With a little spice of lies, this should be a logical reason why I came to this place.
Who would doubt such a small request from a mature woman of marriageable age who wants a child? Of course not, people would most likely believe it.
Even if my flat face looked unconvincing, at least the reason I gave was reasonable enough for others to understand.
The priest then answered me.
"Miss, you are truly blessed by God, not many people care about others when they get rich. I will join you in praying for the best for you, may you be blessed with a good child."
"Thank you, priest. I will donate two gold coins, but please allow me to see what food and items the children like. You can buy anything and I will pay for it."
Looking back, the priest then gathered the children around him. Now that the personnel issue is resolved, I guess it's going to be a pretty long day.
No one will be suspicious, no one will think that I did all this just for one trivial drop of information. Instead of suspecting me, they'll probably thank me.
It's a mutually beneficial exchange.
