Chapter One - Summit City

On an island somewhere in the Pacific ocean, sat a city unknown to the world. It was located in one of the tallest mountains in the central mountainous region of the island. Countless green mountains surrounded it and only a span of untouched green nature could be seen from any direction.

The wind was howling and the sky was filled with dark clouds weeping buckets of rain on the whole island.

Pretty did not care about the woes of the world. She was running for her life right now. She knew that they were just behind her trails, behind the square metal buildings that seemed to form an incoherent madness of a construction, in this case, a city of its own. Blocks of buildings stack haphazardly into one another with no coherent structure. It was like some drunk architect designed it.

She had no clear directions to head to. For thousands of miles there were only mountains and valleys that she knew she couldn’t trek normally, without risking getting caught by the pursuers of her, who had trained in this terrain since they were little. The normal access road that led to this city was probably guarded.

She didn't even know why she was trying to run, if she would be caught in the end eventually. But somehow there was something in her that wanted to at least put up a fight and run away from the reality that she might not get away from this place today, or end up being alive.

There was no way they were going to let her go after what she did. But it helped that she knew that if she couldn’t totally destroy them, at least she had crippled them.

But this was not enough for her, she could not just let them go like this. She would probably die today but they could still revive their organization in a few years and she did not want that to happen. But by the look of things, she had no say in the matter anymore.

It’s not like she could blow this mountain and the people in it. For one, she couldn’t shoulder the guilt of killing those innocent people that were still living in this wretched city. And two, she did not have a bomb, or at least a bomb that was strong enough to blow a city.

She rounded up one building and was passing a hallway when she suddenly stopped. A guard dressed in the white Summit uniform stood on the other side of the hallway holding a phone in front of him. Before she could turn around and go another way, the man looked up from his phone to where she was. The man’s eyes widened in surprise to see a girl dressed in a hoodie and a mask visibly drenched from the rain.

“Are you okay?” he asked her. A second later, his face changed into a realization. He remembered there was an order yesterday morning about an intruder dressed in black jacket with a black mask on her face.

He thought they had already caught her as it had been a day, and the Summit City should be capable of that. But the girl in front of him matched the image that was sent to them yesterday. He was not on duty that time, so he did not know about the status of the intruder’s capture. He cursed the administrator for not doing their jobs well on capturing a traitor, then immediately sprinted towards the girl.

Pretty was initially planning on going back the other way but from where she stood she could hear the cacophony of steps that was coming from behind her. She decided not to go back and instead ran towards the guy ahead of her. She sprinted as if she wanted to crush into the man who was twice her size.

The man was confused but he did not stop thinking he could catch the girl easily. An inkling of an information seemed to be building in his mind but due to the suddenness of the moment he put it aside,

Just a few feet before Pretty would crash into the man, she turned her body 180 degrees and sidestep towards the wall. Spread parallel to the wall, she activated her renisas. The smokey pink fog that surrounded her body, which she could only see, visibly lessened in quantity. A chunk of it went inside her and then like she was never there, she disappeared from the guard’s view.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

The guard was surprised to see that the girl that was just in front of him suddenly disappeared through thin air. His confusion only lasted a second when he recalled some information from yesterday’s announcement. The girl had the ability to make herself invisible. He cursed himself for being careless and then he started fumbling all around him and over the wall looking for the invisible girl.

Pretty continued sprinting just behind the confused guard who was still waving his arm around trying to feel her. They did indeed know that she could turn invisible but they only knew that she could bend the light to copy what’s around her, effectively making her invisible in their eyes. Technically she would still be physically there. But what they did not know was that she could also muffle the sound she made. If not, they would have heard the thunderous sound her steps made while she was running down the hallway.

After reaching the end of the hallway, she turned left and removed her invisibility. She couldn’t afford to use more renisas during a fight or a run, she’s pretty low right now and it was not advisable for her or for anyone to leave their renisas low as it will leave her rentom or soul unguarded. Especially since she was in a rentom organization that specializes in Rentom arts, any one of them could attack her rentom and she would be toast.

A rentom was basically a person's soul or the equivalent of it in layman's words. It was way more complicated than that though. The rentom was protected by fog-like particles called renisas. It was what she used to power her ability a while ago. Rentom arts on the other hand, were arts that used the rentom and the renisas to create an attack. One of the known Rentom Arts was to directly attack the rentom of others. An injured rentom was like an injured body, if left untreated it could kill someone. That was the case if it’s only injured, sometimes a very strong rentom attack could destroy a rentom and kill someone instantly. The more renisas a person has the more it could protect their rentom.

Pretty’s pink renisas was currently at 20%. She couldn’t afford to use them at this rate. She might have bigger rentom and renisas than others but she was still vulnerable to rentom arts, especially if her renisas depleted in a dangerous level.

She was also puzzled by it, most of her renisas was consumed when she was running and hiding away in the city.

It has been more than a day now but the organization did not launch any attack on her soul or anything. With their capabilities, she could have been taken already.

They indeed have limited ways to capture her but if they wanted her dead, they had many ways to do that. But they still just chased her without doing anything drastic, like she was a chicken running in a farmers farm, and they needed her alive to lay some eggs. She had a very bad feeling about it.

The area she was just now was the Administrative area where most of the administrative work that the city needed was done. It was still 6 o'clock in the morning and the people must still be in their homes preparing for the whole day of work. That was the only reason she passed the administrator area, as it will be emptied with people this time of the morning.

After passing through the Administrative Area. Pretty came into a wide city park. There were quite a lot of people in it so she had no choice but to activate her invisibility again. Despite the heavy rain and dark skies she still saw a parade of old people who were running through the tracks of the park. There were some old people who were playing on the swings in the playground. Smiling children were running beside her as she passed by unknowing that she was with them.

She did not ponder why they were acting weirdly during this type of weather or why they are here so early in the morning when there seems to be little light in the park aside from the lamp post scattered around. Maybe they were on some crack or something. Anyway, it was not her business.

She continued running through the center road of the park still maintaining her invisibility. Every second that passed, a portion of her already low renisas was consumed. Despite her worries she did not forget to glance at the beautiful fountains she passed by and how its fixtures of lights were still turned on. It would look like a nice place to stroll for an evening walk, but all she felt was weirdness as she passed through the park.

She saw the exit gate ahead of her and she sprinted through it to passed the park quickly.

Exiting the park, she saw multiple roads branching in different directions in front of her.

Before she chose a road, she gave in to her curiosity and spread a film of renisas in her eyes, now she could clearly see the renisas in her body floating densely close to her body. It was lesser than usual but it was still more than enough to protect her rentom.

She turned her head back to look at the park with her new eyes and she was shocked to the core of what she saw. Hundreds, if not thousands, of gray floating blobs was floating inside the park.

It was gray souls and she had never seen such a dense amount of them.
