Chapter 22 - Dark Tunnel

It might not be as good as a flashlight or a night vision goggles, but it served its purpose by helping her navigate in the dark.

Another good thing about it was that it did not consume renisas. She just had to spread them around and collect them back afterwards. But even though no renisas was expended, it still took a toll on her brain and brain power if she did this for an extended time.

In fact, they had been walking the tunnel for almost 10 minutes already and she was starting to get tired from the constant control of her renisas.

Spreading it takes a lot of concentration and control. She had to maintain their position all the time because if not, they would come back to her body. She had to be aware of every single renisas that she spread or they would be out of her control and they would come back to her. She also had to retrieve them consciously and only pick those in the back part of her.

This conscious control of renisas was certainly an advanced form of renisas control. Even those who had trained more years than her could not achieve this fine control of hers.

She was not a genius, she just had a lot of training, and she had nine years of it.

But even if she was good at controlling renisas, the God of fairness also made her terrible in using other Rentom Arts. In fact she could only use one rentom art, the renisas eyes, which everyone knew how to use. She did not mind it before because she was content with her rentom abilities. But now that she could not access her rentom abilities, what was the use of her fine control of renisas?

She whisked the negative thought out of her mind and focused on a bright thought, like her improving renisas control. She was actually surprised she could execute it this easily and in this duration. It might have improved due to her constant death skirmishes.

She remembered when she was starting to manipulate her renisas when she was a kid, moving a renisas felt like she was trying to lift a stone using a stick. But now she could control them in different shapes and density.

She endured the strain and continued retrieving and spreading her renisas. But all through her walk with the man, she stayed a few meters away from him. She did not know the man and even if he was kind enough to guide her in the dark, it would be wise for her to be wary of him.

She also noticed something from him. She did not know if she should be relieved or insulted about it but when she accidentally happened to increase her pace, the man suddenly increased his too. It happened a few times and she was sure the man was keeping a space between them. He was larger than her so he should not be scared of her. Not, if he could not see her face.

She could not blame him. She was sure he could see in the dark now. Maybe he was a renisas user and had an ability to see in the dark. Just imagined him waking up in a dark place in a tunnel and seeing an ugly freak like her beside him.

She knew even if she had taken a bath and cleaned herself up, people would still recoil from her monstrous face. Honestly, she could also see the uncanny resemblance of herself towards those cannibals in the Wrong Turn franchise.

How she missed her mask, but then again, it was not her fault she was born like this. If she had to adjust by wearing a mask to others. They should also adjust and not look at her.

Despite the man’s obvious aversion to her, he was still kind enough to stop from time to time especially when he noticed she was far behind. He also never ceased to create sounds when he walked, sometimes he stomped or talked to her in single words to let her know he was there, and to give her a direction in the dark.

She was thankful for it.

They continued walking like that for another ten minutes while the tunnel they’re in was winding and turning every now and then. They were walking in a slow pace and just as she could feel an onset of a headache in her head due to her constant use of renisas, they rounded another corner and she saw a light from the distance

Relief flushed on her and she increased her pace. The man also increased his pace.

She let her renisas came back to her body as she could now see a little light around her.

She looked at the man in front of her and she could make out some features of him. He was a tall man with shaggy matted hair mucked by mud, wearing only a simple shirt and pants that she could not know its prior color due to how dirty it was. He also had no footwear.

She was only staring at his back but he could see he had somewhat broad soldiers and was not thin. He was tall, and she could approximate his height as more than six feet, probably 188 centimeters, give or take one centimeters.

Without seeing his face, she could not estimate his age.

Besides, what she learned about profiling people was that not everything you assume was correct hundred percent all the time. A lot of factors affect one’s behavior and physical characteristics.

It was a habit of hers to analyze a person's looks but she should have toned down this habit of hers. She was not working for the Summit anymore and she didn't need to figure out people she met everyday.

But she was curious about the person. Who was he? Why did he end up in the pit, and dying on top of that?

Now that she thought about it, it was also hasty of her to assume that the person was dying. Maybe he was just sleeping, and he happened to like sleeping in smelly places. It was not a far off guess.

With her constant surveillance of various people for more than nine years, she had met all types of weird people who had weird habits. Humans were just diverse and unique from each other.

She also wondered if he was a renisas user or if he had ties to the Summit? He had a strong renisas and he also had that magical fruit that magically healed her. She had never seen something like that.

Thinking about it she also commended herself for eating that fruit.

She admitted that she had a weird streak of trying things out without thinking much about it. She was a believer. If you know magic exists, anything could be possible. Especially a fruit that smelled so good and had a renisas around it. All sign indicated that it should be magical.

During that time, a tiny part of her brain thought that maybe it was one of those moments in books and movies where a main character found a miracle to save themselves.

All those fantasies and stories she had read and watched had influenced her decision. It was reckless but it worked out well.

But then again, most of that decision was motivated out of hunger and she did not want to die with food in front of her uneaten.

Look where it leads. She was alive and she also saved someone from possible death by drowning on garbage or eaten by rats.

But it could also be that the person just loves to play homeless and also has a bad habit of sleeping in dirty places. It would also mean she stole someone’s magical fruit.

Now thinking about it, she could see that the man was still holding the wooden necklace in his hands. She could see the wooden strings of the necklace dangling from his grip.

Was he a member of a renisas organization like the Truth Holder’s Summit that she did not know of? She wanted to ask the man as she had wondered sometimes if there were other organizations like them in the world, but she knew she could not converse with him.

She was thinking and contemplating things when the man in front of her suddenly sprinted when they were a few meters from the exit.

Caught off guard by his sudden move, she stood there with her mouth opened.

Was she that scary? Could he have waited for her for at least a second. She was just planning to say thank you.

She planned to say thank you to him. At least, she should do that. She might be ugly but she was never ungrateful.

She also wanted to at least repay him with something for the fruit. She did not know what, but she had money at least. He definitely could use it. Even if she could not use her ability to access her cash in her storage, she still had money in her online bank account. She had a couple of cash apps that had money inside it, she could transfer him something.

Besides, she also needed a phone. Even homeless people had phones.

But what if he was really just a normal homeless person that just happened to have that fruit with him? Her imagination worked and she imagined maybe he was a worker of someone, then he stole that necklace because he was so poor, and he had to deliver it into a different organization. That organization might be the one controlling that book she met in the Summit.

Her imagination was outstretched and clearly more fictional than real, but they could be true. In this world, nothing is impossible.

It would also mean that he had no phone.

She had checked before and he had nothing with him. But maybe he hid it somewhere. The probability was fifty fifty, but she would take it. She had to get hold of that man.

She reached the end of the tunnel which was covered by overgrown vines and plants, most of which she did not recognize.

It was a big contrast to the inside of the tunnel. The inside was weirdly cleaned of any plants or overgrowth except for tiny saplings and moss while the outside had literally a cover of plants and vines.

What was puzzling was she could not see any disturbance in it. It looked like it could not be passed through but the man a while ago just passed it.
