Chapter 27 - Mad Gray Forest

Pretty unintentionally tried to touch the necklace to inspect it but the man stepped back from her.

Seeing his reluctance, she formed another thought renisas.

She grabbed a little chunk of renisas around her body then thought of the images and feelings she wanted to convey. She commanded the renisas to copy what she was thinking and feeling.

Even if she could not see any physical changes from the renisas, she felt it changed from a visceral level and just like that. her thoughts that she wanted to convey were copied into the renisas.

It was so easy that it befuddled her. She had tried this four years ago after she read a book that mentioned the process of making a thought renisas, but she didn't even know where to start that time. There were instructions but she distinctly remembered how it did not do anything, she thought she was doing it wrong back then.

Pretty grabbed the man’s arm and this time she did not forcefully drill it to his rentom field. She controlled the thought renisas to make contact with his white renisas and unlike what she did before, she only pushed it gently on the man’s renisas.

But the man’s renisas did not budge.

She gently shook the man’s right shoulder and nodded her head to him a couple times.

“Accept it,” she said cajolingly.

The man was confused about what she’s trying to say. But suddenly he closed his eyes and Pretty felt his renisas suddenly pliable. She gently drilled through his renisas and the man’s renisas spread apart like sand.

After pushing her own renisas into his, she finally reached his rentom field, the barrier between the renisas and the rentom, and she waited for it to open.

It did not open this time. She wondered what she did wrong. After some thinking, she remembered that she let her renisas touched his rentom field. She copied it and a second later, a little gap opened and she let the thought renisas entered it.

Information flowed through the man’s mind, but he did not answer her immediately.

She had asked him to let her check his necklace and she would return it later. It was just a mental image of her borrowing the necklace and then adding the image of giving it back. She also added a genial feeling in it conveying that she did not mean harm.

He got the message but he appeared to be reluctant to.

She looked worriedly around her. The dark was still settling down, the more time that passed the more both of their renisas would shine in the dark.

She did not know what to do with their situation but the necklace could offer some help to them so she had to check it.

She did not know why, but when she turned back to the man, he was now holding up his necklace to her. He still looked reluctant but he seemed to be on edge now, also looking around where they were.

She was a little confused but she took the necklace without pause. She looked at it with the little light that was still available but even with her renisas eyes, it seemed to look like a normal wooden necklace.

The man shook his head at her.

She did not understand the gesture, but a sudden idea came to her.

If this was what she had thought it was, then she only needed to try it out.

She controlled some renisas around her and let it enveloped the necklace but nothing happened. She changed her renisas to pink and it did nothing.

Suddenly she remembered a clause in that book she read about ‘offerings’. Renisas was also connected to the will of the controller, if it was used with aggressive emotion then it would behave as one and if the user restricted other people to use their renisas, then the renisas would automatically resist anyone who would want to take over it.

She changed her mindset and controlled her renisas to be an offering and removed any wariness she felt before.

Just like that, the necklace immediately sucked up the renisas wrapped around it and then it shone in red color. In both of their eyes, the wooden necklace transformed into a metal one with a tinge of red color in it.

Pretty looked up to the man with surprise while the man looked at her with shock and disbelief. He stuttered something and pointed his index finger at her.

Pretty ignored him and turned back to the necklace.

Her guess was correct. This was a renisas object or device.

In the books that she had read, most of them were histories, there were items and gadgets mentioned there that could elicit a rentom ability as long as it was supplied with renisas.

A tube that could shoot a bomb, a stick that could blast fire with no fuel, and a bracelet that could heal someone instantly, were just a few examples she remembered. They were portable rentom abilities. It was an obsolete craft and no one had seen a rentom device ever again for thousands of years.

The last known renisas item that was known to renisas users was a bracelet owned by the Summit. It was already destroyed hundreds of years ago. It was a bracelet that could heal anyone who used it.

She saw the remnant of it in the Summit Museum but she did not believe back then that it was real.

No one really believed these devices to be true. Rentom abilities were abilities that humans acquired to themselves through their rentom. Object didn’t have any rentom in them.

Everyone just assumed it was a legend or a hoax. Even the books mentioned that it might be just a myth and not a fact.

But Pretty had witnessed the platform in the throne statue where Simon laid her, if that was not a renisas device, then she did not know what.

She was about to test the necklace by wearing it, but she stopped and looked at the still shocked man. She held the necklace to her head and gestured to him that she was about to wear it. She was asking for approval from him.

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

The man did not respond, and as she did not have the time to wait for him, she took that silence as an approval.

She wore it and immediately controlled her renisas that were inside it to find something. Instantly she could feel the renisas inside the necklace being consumed by something and immediately her vision burst into light and colors.

She looked around and she could see everything as if it was day.

Aside from that, she could also see the spirits, neafs and the rentom eater’s gray renisas around the forest.

The necklace could let a person see in the dark, just like what the man did in the tunnel. It also appeared that the necklace had the ability to see the rentom realm too.

She tapped her mind to the remaining renisas inside the necklace and explored her senses in it. She was surprised to feel some distinct phantom holes inside it.

They were sholes. Just from the area she could sense, there seemed to be more than four sholes in it.

The sholes felt like her own sholes. They share similar characteristics of sucking renisas, but if it was automatic with her own sholes, the sholes in the necklace felt like she needed to toggle it manually.

This discovery excited her. She only read about a rentom device having one ability in the books. There were some mentions about some devices having two, but it was rare. Now, she was wearing a device that had more than four abilities in it. She did not know where to start marveling about it. The Summit would die to have this.

Imagine, a portable rentom ability that anyone could use as long as they supplied it with renisas. She bet anyone in the Summit would pay anything or kill anyone just to obtain this necklace.

That was not her concern right now. She went back exploring the necklace and felt around one of the sholes. When her renisas went near it, she felt a faint sucking sensation from it, but unlike the first sholes, it was not automatically sucking her renisas.

She pushed her renisas in it and she felt a distinct feeling of something being pierced came from the shole. It then sucked every renisas she had left in the necklace, and her vision immediately changed.

She was looking at the necklace being held in her hand and her vision zoomed to the little nooks and crannies of the necklace, as well as the dirt in her hand. She looked to the ground and she could distinctly see the small pebbles in it as if she was looking at them beside her eyes with a magnifying glass.

She looked to the forest and she could see the trees far away from her as if they were just standing beside her. To her chagrin she could also now clearly see the face of a rentom eater far away from her like it was standing in front of her.

It had pale gray skin with dark crisscrossing black blood veins around its face and neck. A half part of his face had already rotten and a gaping hole had replaced it. Its mouth was opened in a biting position and its dark mouth and dark teeth were wetted with saliva.

It still had its clothes which looked more like rags, but it was an unmistakable human’s clothes, courtesy of the person that it used to be.

Its entire right arm was missing. But despite that, it was able to stand up and move, looking for living beings to consume.

That would happen to her and the man if they did not escape from where they were now.

Those creatures were named rentom eaters but that name was actually inaccurate. What they do was more like infecting someone with their gray renisas, changing one’s rentom into a gray one.

They were only called eaters because they eat flesh as they tried to get into the rentom of a living being.

It was not because they wanted flesh to survive or they wanted to consume it, it was just a consequence of them trying to reach the person’s rentom. They were governed by instincts so they could not understand that consuming a person’s flesh would not help them.

She looked away from it and checked the other sholes in the necklace.

The necklace had already consumed all of her free renisas in it so she supplied it more. She went to the third shole and let her renisas entered it.

Her vision suddenly flickered and all around her, she could see things like trees vanished and appeared again in her view. She clutched her head from the sudden head pain and disconcertion from her vision and after a moment she looked up and tried to look at her surroundings again.

This time she focused on one tree and she was shocked to see her vision go pass through it to the tree behind it. She focused on the tree behind it and her vision passed through it.

It looked like a sight ability that could make someone see pass an object.

She had no chance to check the ability as it went off after five seconds of use. She checked and the renisas she supplied in it were already consumed.

She could still see around like it was a day. It seemed that the sholes worked separately and could extend in different duration depending on the amount of renisas they had. She had supplied the same amount of renisas to the three sholes but the last two only lasted for a few seconds.

She was about to check the fourth shole but before she could do it, her vision changed and the once colorful view of her surroundings had changed into a dimmer one. Like a dim black and white movie scene.

At the same time, she could feel the renisas in the first shole vanished. it must have lost its effects. But she was confused by how she could still see in the dark even if it was in black and white.

She removed the necklace from her neck and her vision became dimmer as there were only little natural lights left to see around. She wore it again and her surroundings had become black an white again.

She supplied another renisas to the first shole and her vision turned into colors.

Was the black and white vision not from a shole?

She did not remember a shole sucking her renisas before, but the necklace seemed to have a somewhat passive ability to see things in black and white. She did not know how it did it, but what she knew was that she did not have enough time to think about it.

She then proceeded to check the fourth sholes.

She added another renisas in the necklace, anticipating what abilities the fourth shole could do. She hoped it was a useful ability that she could use in her current situation, like an ability that could shoot lasers with her eyes so that she could blast the rentom eaters around her.

The necklace seemed to have abilities related to sight. If it was another time, she would have been thrilled about these abilities. But she could die anytime now, and these abilities were currently useless to her.

Her renisas was then sucked by the shole but she found a problem. When she let her renisas entered the first three hole, it almost sucked up all the renisas she supplied in it but it still left a small amount that it would suck grafually in order to lengthen the use of an ability. But she had already supplied the fourth shole with the same amount of renisas but she could only feel less than half of the space inside it being filled. It needed more renisas.

She risked it and supplied it with more renisas till it got full. She had some regrets for the wasted renisas but it was not like she could use it anyway.

She waited for the effects to happen but for a moment nothing happened.

She looked at the man beside her and then saw his body glow in some brown color. Then it changed into a lighter brown. She did not know what it meant but she knew it was another useless sight ability.

She hastily turned to the fifth shole and prayed again for a combat ability but as she supplied it with renisas to know what ability it has, she felt the shole’s size bigger than the previous one. Way much bigger. She had already supplied twice the amount of renisas she supplied the fourth shole but it was still inadequate.

She added it with more renisas but she could not even feel it getting filled a little. Her renisas felt like a drop of water in a glass bottle.

With disappointment, she decided she could not fill it more. She did not know the exact amount she needed but it would at least take a fourth if not half of what she had now. If she wanted to execute her contingency plan, then she needed renisas to ward off the neafs.

She tried to check the next shole but she realized with dread, that the remaining light in the sky had now gone. She was still using the necklace so her vision was bright, but she still knew because all the rentom eaters were now looking at her.

She removed the necklace from her neck and saw that it was indeed dark already.

She hastily supplied the necklace with renisas and forced it to the man’s neck.

The man was surprised by her moves but then his eyes immediately widened with shock and fear as he saw what was around him. His mouth widened and he was stuck there for a moment like a statue.

She did not even have to use a renisas thought to tell him what to do.

Pretty grabbed the man’s hand and screamed, “Run!”

Then both of them were off running.
