Chapter 41: Weedle's Battle

Chapter 41: Weedle's Battle

Weedle typically gives off a slow and steady vibe, but it ate astonishingly fast, devouring a fruit almost as big as its head in just over ten seconds.

"You sure have a big appetite," Ash said with a smile as he watched Weedle polish off the fruit and belch contentedly.

Only then did Weedle seem to come to its senses, recalling the events that had led up to its capture. It finally understood that it had been caught by the human trainer before it.

"How about it? Want to come with me and see the world outside?" Ash extended his right hand to Weedle, unafraid of any potential attack from it.

Weedle looked at Ash, then at Pikachu sleeping nearby, and at Pidgeotto, who was training on its own not far away. After a moment of thought, it nodded its little head and gently tapped Ash's hand with its own head.

"Let's formally introduce ourselves then. I'm Ash, and my goal is to become the world's strongest trainer!" Ash grinned, carefully avoiding Weedle's sharp horn as he patted its head.

After a short rest, Pidgeotto returned from its training. Having been introduced to Weedle, a certain level of communication was established, although Weedle still held some fear of Pidgeotto, knowing it was the same Pidgey that had defeated it earlier.

Pikachu had also woken up by then and was very happy to see their group had grown. With its friendly nature, Pikachu acted as a bond between Pidgeotto and Weedle.

Ash had planned to rest for the day, but after the earlier battle, Pidgeotto still wanted to improve its strength and headed back into the forest to train based on Ash's advice.

Pikachu, not wanting to remain idle after its recent breakthrough to the Normal level, was eager to get accustomed to its new strength.

As for Weedle, Ash was busy creating a training plan for it. Before evolving into Beedrill, Weedle's combat ability is notably weak. After some practice, Ash discovered that it knew Poison Sting and String Shot.

These moves are innate for Weedle, and it hadn't inherited any other moves from its parents. Apart from Caterpie, it seemed unlikely that any other Pokémon could be outmatched by Weedle in its current form.

So, essential training was a must for Weedle to have any significant battle power, especially since it had very little combat experience. Ash planned to give it some basic training and then find a Caterpie for it to battle against. As for finding solitary Weedles, Ash preferred not to provoke them unnecessarily, as they seldom appeared alone.

After teaching Weedle some fundamental battling techniques, Ash didn't return it to its Poké Ball. Instead, he let it stay on his left shoulder while Pikachu, seeing that Ash was preparing to leave, hopped onto his other shoulder.

Leaving a note for Misty to explain his whereabouts, Ash temporarily left the campsite in search of a suitable opponent for Weedle to battle.

His search was quickly successful—after all, the Viridian Forest was home to countless Bug-type Pokémon. Just a hundred meters from the campsite, Ash spotted a Caterpie.

"Weedle, this is your first battle under my direction. Just follow my commands and stay calm, and you'll be fine," Ash whispered to Weedle, taking advantage of the fact that the Caterpie hadn't noticed them yet.

"Weedle—!" Weedle nodded lightly, acknowledging Ash's words. Technically, this wasn't its first time battling other Pokémon, but it was the first time being commanded by a human.

"Pikachu, I'm counting on you to handle protection. Make sure no other Pokémon interferes with us," Ash nodded slightly then instructed Pikachu.

"Pika Pika—!" Pikachu patted its chest, assuring Ash of its vigilance.

"Alright... Let the battle begin, Weedle!" Ash stepped forward with Weedle, startling the Caterpie, which slightly curled up in fear upon hearing Ash's voice.

"Strike first, Weedle, use String Shot!" Ash swung his right hand, commanding the Weedle in front of him.

"Weedle—!" Channelling its Bug-type energy, Weedle shot a string of silk from its pink snout towards the Caterpie.

Caught by surprise, the Caterpie hastily retreated, but it still got tangled in the silk. Hindered by the string shot, its movements and speed were slowed, and it found itself restricted.

"Don't give it a chance to recover, use Poison Sting!" While Poison-type moves don't have a specific advantage against Bug-types, nor are they resisted, they inflict standard damage.

Using its sharp, poison-laced horn, Weedle struck the Caterpie, pushing it back slightly. The power of Poison Sting is admittedly low, considered one of the weakest offensive moves.

However, Poison Sting has an additional effect: there is a chance to poison the target. Unfortunately for the Caterpie, it became poisoned.

A flash of purple light briefly appeared on Caterpie's body, followed by purple bubbles emerging from it—a clear sign of poisoning.

Being poisoned causes a Pokémon to lose one-eighth of its maximum health after each action. This is just the superficial impact; the discomfort from poisoning can significantly affect a Pokémon's ability to fight.

"Lucky hit?" Ash was surprised that he managed to poison the Caterpie with just one attack, given that Poison Sting only has a 30% chance of causing poisoning.

The Caterpie was in a dire situation, wanting to flee but hindered by the silk, and too distressed by the poisoning to gather energy for a counterattack.

The outcome was clear; Weedle easily defeated the Caterpie. The battle was so straightforward it almost seemed trivial, and after defeating its opponent, Weedle was visibly delighted, celebrating its first victory.

After the Caterpie lost its ability to fight, the poisoning effects also dissipated. Ash left it under the shade of a tree and moved on.

He praised Weedle, helping to build its confidence, and then continued to find a few more Caterpie for it to battle against. He only stopped once Weedle began to show signs of fatigue.

For a Weedle to evolve quickly into a Kakuna, aside from leveling up, it's essential to deplete its energy substantially. This stimulates its genetics and induces a sense of crisis, naturally leading to evolution.
